Let's keep this going from the other site.

In July of 2015 (45 yrs old), my doctor told me I weighed 285 and had just under 30% body fat. It was an eye opener for me and I resolved then and there to do something about it. Since that day, I started lifting 4 days a week and have recently started jogging 2-3 miles a day, 3-4 days a week. At my last visit in late October, I was down to 248 and 20.3% BF. Over the holidays, I have crept back up to 258 but I attribute that to the new work out routine I started in late October since my pants are still loose and I'm still using the same, if not one tighter, belt loop.

I don't really care what my weight winds up being (within reason) but my goal is to be around 235 and 12% BF.

So, let's do this. Let's encourage each other to get in better shape!

In July 2012 I decided I had to make changes to my life. Four years in my sedentary office job with somebody bringing in donuts every other week and my wife's cooking every night caused me to balloon into the worst shape I had every imagined myself in. My brother was diagnosed with weight-related sleep apnea and my wife told me she was afraid I would end up with it also.

I turned myself around and in about 5 months I dropped 50 pounds. But it was too much too fast. I was hardly eating at all and pounding my body running twice a day and while it felt good to be thinner I let myself cheat at the holidays and let my running fall off some and in two more months I had gained back 20 pounds.

I hovered around that weight and that condition (fat jogger) for four more years. I ate junk on special occasions and overall didn't have good control over my diet. Even though I exercised every day it wasn't enough to overcome the garbage I ate and without strength training I was hopelessly spinning my wheels.

This spring I found a running partner and started getting more serious about my diet. The running partner made me push myself harder than I had pushed before and I decided I wanted more than to just look like a fat jogger. To the gym to lift weights and reshape my body I went and this feels like something I could actually do long term. I still have a long way to go yet, but I believe that I can do this thing. I will see the south side of 200 pounds soon. I will have to dig out pants I wore in high school. That will make this worth everything.

Congratulations to everyone who is doing better ;-)

I started in April at 260 pounds. My BP had been bad for years and was on a good dose to try and help it. My waist was right at 44/45. I was so tired of it. A co-worker had been having good success with a "diet" called keto. I spoke with my doctor and he had no reservations with me doing it. I figured it wouldn't work for me since I loved bread and soda.

Well as I sit here typing this I am under 180 with a waist of 34 and my BP is good enough that my dose has been reduced to a fraction of what it was a year ago. A week before thanksgiving I started to transition off of keto and back to eating carbs again. I did it slowly and now maintain a reasonable amount of carbs but I still track my intake and total calories and a month later I am still floating between 175-180 which was my goal.

2009 I was 260 lbs found out I was type 2 diabetic and got down to 175 lbs in 6 months. Was able to come off the meds until this year. My weight creeped back up to 225 back on 2 different meds now one being a shot. I have lost 12 lbs since last month but I was already eating halfway decent and exercising, but the weight was coming from steroids for back issues over the past couple years. I am also very limited in exercising I cannot run anymore without risking more back damage. My goal is to double my walking from 1 hr to 2 hrs. I am motivated because I am 41 and while coming off the meds is temporary for me I want to feel like I am beating diabetes again one last time.

I don't think I have gained any weight over the holidays but I am probably just fooling myself. Bumping this up, though, in case there are any members that could use some encouragement this time of year.

Starting our second round of Whole30 this week. The first was rough, but an eye opener. I lost 16 lbs in the first 10 days, and 26 total in the 30. This was back in the Sep timeframe. Stayed about the same for two months, then we all went nuts from Turkey Day thiught today. Probably put ~12 back on.

Gonna give it another good shot and see what can be done this second go round, and try better to keep it off. Need to get moving as well, as working from home sitting in a chair all day doesn't lead to burning many calories.

No super, duper weight loss system will ever do you any good. Nothing but loss, gain, loss, gain.

There is only one way and one way alone for sustained weight loss. That's a lifestyle change.

You must know when to stop lifting the fork.

Getting married in 3 months, give or take. Recently lost about 15/20lbs, currrently 170lbs (5'9") but want to get into better shape. I'm hoping to get down to 160 & more fit than I am now. I'd probably die if I tried to run a mile.

I didn't gain that much weight for the holidays. However I am not in the best shape of my life and have not been in a few years. Wife and I are going back to cutting the carbs, more leafy greens and less fried foods. My biggest carb weakness is my beer. I know they have the low carb diet beer, but it's not my beer. We had grest success with this before so we will try it again. Congrats to all whom have had success and keep up the good work.

Congratulations on getting hitched.

I know the feeling, mine isn't beer but fast food. I'm in sales so I'm on the road all day long, so it's hard. I eat it so often that all I did to lose a bunch of weight was stop eating fast food for a month, I think I'm gonna go back to it, I've fallen off the wagon a bit.

Started back with the high rep portion of my workout routine (Shortcut to Size) and lost 4 lbs this week. Need for the weather to cooperate again so I can start doing cardio again

everyday diet:
beef
eggs
kale
blueberries/blackberries/strawberries
water and black coffee only

no toxic chemicals or fake sweeteners
coconut oil and baking soda for deoderant

work butt off lifting and on the rower

beer and whiskey okay (although I should cut back)

that's the IrishCannon way.

Well, my cardio took a hit. Messed up my left knee during the snow storm and now it hurts to push down with that leg. No cardio or leg workouts until this heals :(

Knee and back are better and I am lifting/bike riding again. Thankfully since my last visit showed that I weighed 263 and had gained 1.5% bf over the holidays (sort of a win since that should have only caused about 5 extra lbs, not 15, so my workout appears to be working :)

Plan is to get in good enough shape to do a Spartan Sprint in August and a Super in September

No one else having trouble losing weight and could use extra motivation?

Can you swim? I'm not terribly good at it, but that's my go-to when lower-body stuff gets wonky (injury, long-term fatigue, etc). If necessary (and if you know what you're doing) you can isolate to upper-body only if it's *really* bad.

I can and do like swimming but my workout times mesh up with swim lessons, water aerobics and when a bunch of other people are sticking with their New Year's resolutions, so I can't swim. Once the numbers start dipping, I am definitely adding some pool time into my routine

"Started" Oct. 30th at 188. Weighed 173 this morning. Limited my carb and sugar intake. I still indulge here and there. I haven't had a beer since then, but I've drank my weight Jack Daniels. That's the biggest issue I have. Not only is it not the best thing I could be doing for my body, but I tend to want to eat just before bed. No real exercise to speak of.

My wife ordered a treadmill Saturday. It was on sale and had free shipping. It should be here in the next few days. I wonder how many ammo cans will fit on it?

I'm working to better myself already. Using our treadmill and kettle bells. Tonight was kinda scary though, whole family has just come through a battle with whatever this cough/deep lung irritation thing is. Ran last night and tonight but tonight my breath got short. Guess I'm not completely well yet.

I HIGHLY recommend kettle bell training. They don't have to weigh a lot to kick your tail either. But you will notice toning very quickly if you use them.

My son is also now in the running club at school....so, I am not going to miss out on helping him with that, thus, I am running again. I thought after they academy my running days were done, lol. Couch to 5k, here I come.

Last year I was up to almost 270, BP up cholesterol up, started a radical diet. In 4 months I was down to 205. The only problem with radical diets is it is easy to put it back when you stop. I am now back to 250 and soft.
I am starting a sensible diet and exercise plan on 2/1. I have a goal of 200 and fit by end of summer. I set a goal reward of adding another bike to the collection if I make it.:D

motivation? Yeah, I could use some. I weighed 390 on 1-1-17 in the am, the heaviest that I have ever been. Yesterday morning, I was @ 383. I started on the thread mill but my feet went to killing me. I have cut out milk and french fries. I cut out soft drinks and sweeteners in June 2015. Hopefully I will get my head straight and start a better and reasonable approach.

You can do it. Not sure about your life situation but what has motivated me is wanting to make sure I am around to watch my kids grow up, go to college, get married, etc. And, I guess, grow old wife my wife :) Find something important to you and use it for motivation

Had a physical last week, got the news that I now have diabetes, and high tryglicirides. I am 5'5 and 204 lbs. I was put on metformin once a day and lipitor once a day. I don't like taking medicine. So I am determined to get off the meds. Both of parents are diabetic, so I am fighting my genes. I go back in a month to see if I have made any progress, my A1C was 8.6.

Good luck! I've been thinking about starting the Paleo diet and one of their claims is it helps with diabetes. Might be worth looking in to. I think rantingredneck (whatever his name is here) does it, so he is probably a better resource

For anyone interested, registration is open for a 100 mile bike ride I am participating in on April 22nd. There are 33, 62 and 100 mile options. http://www.rivercitycyclingclub.com

My buddy is trying to get me into doing rides like this. I think he done the New Bern ride for the past 2 or 3 years.

You ought to try it, it's very rewarding. It feels like a huge accomplishment to finish a big one. I have at least one friend doing this with me, maybe two.

I gotta do something... put on 30 pounds since Thanksgiving! I've joined the gym with my son but I have to control my diet a bit as well. Started back swimming too. I love to eat.... it's going to be hard for a while. lol

I started a few years ago. 286lbs.

Got on the keto/paleo bandwagon, and dropped a rather quick 50lbs.

Here's a more recent comparison:
CW8j6xtl.jpg

I'm back on it pretty hardcore after sitting right at 235ish pounds for the past 2 years or so. I'd like to lose 20ish more.

My official start weight at around midnight on the first was 254, right now I'm at 252. 2 down another 50 or so to go. My dog has been getting pudgy so she is my walking partner, she needs the old diet and exercise too. She's sleeping good tonight a truck ride and a 3 mile beach walk wore us both out.

I retired out of the Navy in the mid-150s, if I recall correctly. That was in 2005. At 5' 9" with my build, not a bad weight.

Shortly after retirement, I settled out at about 184 and stayed there a number of years. One day, I stepped on the scales and weighed in at 194. I had been as high as 199, but this time it hit me that I really needed to take my weight seriously and get it under control.

I seriously cut back on calorie intake per day and dropped down to 159 over a few months. 35 pound weight loss.

My girls noticed (my oldest saying "We need to start running this summer, Daddy!" Not at my age and inclination!), which was a nice feeling.

My wife, I think, is trying to kill me. "You're too skinny! You need to eat more!" I think I need to take a serious look at how much life insurance I have...

Anyway, it sure feels better all around. At 8 pounds per gallon of water, that's nearly 4 1/2 gallons of volume (slightly more, when you consider fat is less dense than water). How many people here would like to lug around a 5 gallon bucket of water all day, every day? Because that's what carrying around that much extra weight amounts too.

Just got off the treadmill, day 1 of week 2 of the couch to 5k app....so far, so good.

Positive step today...New bike rack so my son and I can ride. Knocked the dust off an old favorite road bike (1985 Fuji) that I rebuilt a few years ago when I was riding about 12 miles a day. Looking forward to sharing some saddle time with my son.

If you are just starting out, don't get frustrated the first few weeks, your body freaks out going from nothing to working out. It's going to look odd, your going to gain and loose weight. Your body is trying to figure out what the hell is happening to it. Push on!
