So I've read most of what has been posted here over the years about thermal....

I think the route I'm looking at going is the Krypton 2 FXG50 rather than a dedicated thermal scope, the ability to move it between rifles and use it as a stand alone monocular is appealing.

My primary use is likely topping a AR for coyotes that are encroaching.

I have been looking for awhile and think I have settled on the Pulsar Thermion 2 XQ 35

I believe it can be switched to multiple platforms but I’ve been on and off about getting one but think the time is near.

I’m interested to hear of others experience.

I have experience with Thermal. I have a dedicated rifle that I run a thermal “scope” on. My friend who is a medic in Alamance County runs a clip on. He has a lot of issues with significant poi shift. The concept of the clip on is great. I’m not sure it works if you are looking for precision. That’s just my two cents.

I've been researching the AGM Rattlers. Clip on type that come with ADM QD mounts that return to zero and seem like they would work handheld.

A while back I had a lil windfall and purchased REAP-IR from the the original mfg IR-Defense prior to the Trijicon buyout.
It's a 640 unit that specs out nicely but doesn't have all the cute lil color palettes. It was used mostly on a SCAR17s but got swapped amongst several rifles. There are 4 memory locations for zero and it works great. The D-Loc QD attachment is easy to use and RTZ is excellent.
Get a quality QD for your day scope and you can swap with confidence.
In that same windfall I also picked up a Pulsar Quantum 384 spotter with video out. Which I foolishly sold off a bit later when my interest in stumbling around in the dark waned a bit. It was an excellent unit and the res was more than enough.
One thing I can say is beware of too much native magnification. The 2x of the REAP is about as much as I'd want on the bottom end.
Cause critters-in-need-of-ventilation will show up "right there" and that 4x native with bite ya in the ass way more often than native 2x will cost ya on "out there". The "4x" and "8x" may be useful for spotting but little else and ya really don't need a lot of "magnification" (read: pixelation) in a thermal. Stuff happens close in at night and it's amazing how much more you can get away with movement wise.
Beware the "greasy kid stuff". And yes, I'm lookin dead at you, ATN. The goofy crap is just somethin else to go wrong and complicates an already expensive device with a learning curve.
I tried the "spot with the scope then mount it when needed" gig. No thanks. Makes for a lotta fumbling in the dark.
The 384 res of the Quantum would have been more than sufficient for my needs if it was in a scope. I'd wager that 320 would be fine, too.
I also had one of the lil $500 guppies from FLIR **SPIT**. The low res/low frame rate were really wonky and ineffective even for spotting.
A good "budget" gig, IMO, would be a decent thermal spotter and a Gen 2+ I2 scope with a good torch. Somethin decent from both worlds and somewhat "budget" anyways. That said, I'm an old man and my info is old as well. Dunno what's going on currently. Don't care.
I do remember being amazed at what wasn't "out there" in the darkity dark. It's not as "crowded" as I imagined it would be.
..Another thing. And this is important. Be very careful in your decision. Once ya get into this price range for these toys your used market gets mighty thin and used thermal scares peeps I think. My REAP, which is, or at least was, a standard of sorts, cost ~$7500 new in 2016. Last year I had it on the market as low as $4k and crickets. My point being that ya need to really make an informed decision with these things. In the end I'm kinda glad it didn't sell as I really do like having the quality thermal option in my kit. It is a decided advantage in both night and day.
But once ya get it it's most likely "yours" unless yer ready to take a real bath on it. Mine wasn't so bad in my warped sense of value as I fell bass-ackwards into a bit of money and got to push the "Fool Button" somewhat risk free. 🥸🤡🤖
YMMV..

I'm curious about that specifically, the Pulsar mount seems robust enough but it's hard to say

I've been researching the AGM Rattlers. Clip on type that come with ADM QD mounts that return to zero and seem like they would work handheld.

I’ve also been looking into the Rattlers for a while and have begun actively shopping them. Not to knit pick but the clip ons (TC models) mount directly to a scope, the scopes (TS models) have the ADM QD mount.

ADM mounts are my go-to for all AR optics so I really like that. The Rattlers can be setup with multiple profiles for different rifles or rounds so you can utilize the QD and swap between rifles.

On the low end, the Rattler TS25-256 is appealing because it’s $1200 and has a 3.5x native mag. The next set up in the line up is the $2k TS25-384 which has a 1.5x native. If you think you’re going to be using the zoom, the second you zoom in to 3x on the TS25-384, you’re down to a 192 picture. So it’s a question of FOV vs magnification for maintaining picture quality.

I have their entry level 192 monocular (1x). 192 is not a great picture and even at 80-100yd it’s difficult to ID a dog, but it’s usable. If I end up grabbing a 256, I think the extra magnification will be welcomed, of course FOV is being sacrificed.

On AGM’s site I just noticed they’re advertising V2’s of most models coming soon. I’ll probably hold off to see if the V2’s are worth it, or maybe keep an eye out for a smoking deal on a V1 from someone who upgraded.

Edit: it looks like the V2’s offer more than 2x battery life and upgraded 12micron vs 17micron sensor for great identification range. They’ve also slightly increased the base mag on most models. Price increase is relatively small for most models. I’ve already found the 25-384 V2 for $1800, pretty tempting.

Not sure how good it will be, but a lot of buzz over the two new holosuns coming out. Both an NV and a thermal. The thermal will list about 1700.

You can google and read up on them. I’m on the list for a thermal when it hits the market.

I really appreciate reading your thoughts on this. I have been looking for quite awhile but have not made a move because I don't want to make the wrong one.
