The led light in my garage was recently damaged due to a lightning strike behind my house. Now I need to replace the fixture. My question is, if I wanted to replace this standard led fixture with a fluorescent light, would it be difficult? I posted a picture of the current fixture.

I would do led in the old style you're talking about. But no it's not hard.
The previous led light didn’t put off a lot of light. The output is fine for every day use but I use my garage as a wood working shop and would enjoy more light. I figured if I had the expense of buying a new fixture I might as well get more light

Use LED light. Piece of cake to change. You will remove the recessed light you have and wire the same back. Many videos on this.

Try and find a brighter LED light. Anything else will develop too much heat and use too much electricity.

You can also put other fixtures on that same set of wires and spread light across the garage. Hang as many lights as you wish. Put four in if you need it. Some metallic cable or 1/2” conduit and you can make it be the sun.

If I were to go to the trouble, I’d rip out my existing fluorescent and put in these.

I was at a customer’s home last week and he had that same light. It did the the whole 500 sqft very well.

I'd go with 4ft LED shoplight fixtures from Amazon. Darn cheap and lots of light.

If all you lost was a light fixture consider yourself lucky. We had a strike in the woods behind our house 2 weeks ago. Took out 2 garage door openers, 2 TV's, 3 cable boxes, irrigation controller and a small UPS. Still didnt add up to insurance deductable. Can't imagine that can light put out too much usable light especially for woodworking. Put in a receptacle in its place and plug in a big LED strip light.

Agree to use 4' LED strips. I had two 100W bulbs in my 22x21' garage, could not see my hand with the door closed. I put up a dozen 4' strips, four rows of three.

This is one of many. The lightning struck a tree about twenty feet behind the garage

I lost 6 4’ led fixtures, battery maintainer in my shop last week due to lightning strike! Didn’t faze the crappy fluorescent fixtures still in use!

Another one of those things I didn’t know I needed. I had a single bulb for many years. Then probably 5-6 years ago my mom was cleaning out her storage room and found a 4’ flourescent fixture with tubes still in the box. I swapped out the plain single bulb fixture for another single bulb that had an outlet on it. Mounted the flourescent and plugged it in. Problem is it sometimes take multiple flips on/off with the switch for it to wake up.

So I saw the post above and looked around a little. I found one that was 80W equivalent instead of 60W. It also had a downward facing LED. It came last night and I swapped it out this morning. It’s definitely brighter. Only downside (really minor) is a couple shadows I ended up with. I have some things like bag chairs, tent, and a pedal plane hanging from the ceiling. The 4’ tubes allowed a little more light to get by.

The shadow here is the actual garage door motor, but you can see everything is pretty bright:

Definitely a storage garage as opposed to a working/shop garage...and here’s the shadow in one corner:

I think it’s a keeper. Considering putting a similar style in the attic.

I have one of those in my attic and it really works well. Much better than a regular light bulb which had been in for years.

I’m too lazy to take down the fluorescent fixtures in my garage. But, I am tempted to put those leds in the attic and crawlspace.

I bought this one and put it in the attic yesterday morning...definite improvement.

It’s the only bulb up there and now it lights up the sides much better.

Probably should’ve shopped around before I redid my crawlspace lighting a year or two ago. I just a single bulb right near the door. Ended up running wire and installing 5 (maybe 6?) more fixtures. Swapped to LEDs and I think it’s less total wattage than the one bulb I had. Could’ve done it with 2-3 of these instead.

Soon after moving into the house, I replaced the attic and crawlspace light switches with 60 minute spring wound timer versions (it was long before electronic timer switches hit the market). All we had back then was incandescent bulbs and I’d find the lights on from some service person who’d come months before. :(

We would never leave a light on under a house unless the critters needed to read.
