What is the max effective range of the 300 win mag on steel? I'm still thinking of building a bolt gun and I don't have a big boy caliber rifle. With a brake how bad is the 300 as I have never shot one before. Rifle will not be shot a lot. Or should I look elsewhere?

Range...…..1300+
Recoil with a Heavy rifle is tolerable without a brake...... With a brake it's cake...….but people around you will hate you.

There was a guy in my group at hawks ridge yesterday with a 300, braked... under the shelter, with my ear pro on, it still vibrated/tingled... borderline hurt my ears lol. I was standing behind him.

Pretty big boom.

My brother picked up a .338 Lapua Mag with a brake. Felt recoil is less than a .308 Win without a brake.

Your effective range will probably be limited by your glass, dope, ballistic calculator, mount and rings instead of the cartridge. Oh, those things and your statement that it will "not be shot a lot."

It probably will be a 6.5 but I'm just curious.

If that is the case and you already have a 6.5 Creedmoor take a good look at the 6.5 SAUM or 6.5 PRC if you don't want to reload. I have heard reports that factory 6.5 SAUM loaded ammo is coming in 2019.

The SAUM will push the same bullets as the Creedmoor @3000+ fps and still yield similar if not better barrel life (2k-3k rounds). It is a short action not a long action like a .300Win. Recoil is not bad which makes sense with a charge weight of ~60gr versus 75gr. I have one and it is a lot of fun in the 800yd-1300yd range. Anything closer than that and it gets boring because there is so little wind drift under normal conditions.

Does the 308 and 6.5 creedmoor share the same bolt face? Like if you have a 308 rifle you will just need to buy a 6.5 barrel?

Yes, they both share the same bolt face. What action are you planning on building off of if you go this route? There are lots of prefit's available from Shilon, Criterion, Rock Creek, PVA, ect.

Can't decide if I should get the savage 110 tactical or the howa 1500 in the American built arms chassis..... but I still have to wait on some cash lol

Unless you're an experienced long range shooter, I'd recommend getting a 308 to start out with. Will do 800+ yards on steel just fine, especially if you handload, and it won't burn out a barrel in 3000 rounds like some of the whiz-bang go-fast rounds out there now.
