He would also go way out of his way to be, whatever the hell it was that he decided to be. I put up with it at two different forums.

I once years ago took pains to post a detailed and picture laden thread for the forum of me repairing a classic S&W wheel gun, the first time I had one apart.

He railed at me for taking a Smith revolver apart because I wasn’t a qualified S&W smith. And then because he didn’t like the tools I was using, and then he was distressed at corrosion he saw on the inside of the gun that was actually a reflection of the red shirt I was wearing. That gun was perfect when I finished.

He had tremendous capacity to be good for the community, but unless he decided he liked what you posted, he could be an unmitigated a$$hole, early and often. And across two forums in my experience over a decade.

I finally PM’ed and told him to stay the hell out of my threads if he did't have anything nice or constructive to say, and all I got back was a foaming-at-the-mouth, unhinged tirade of expletives.

...and the damn horse he rode in on.

To be fair, Bill’s bench was a classic thread.

I thought his ”the NRA way or the highway“ view of reloading made it difficult for folks to learn.

Did meet him once, fine guy. Old curmudgeon for sure, but sometimes he’d just punch the button.

I get it, we all have bad days, and sometimes we really don’t know how well our messages are being received. Text here is sometimes difficult to gauge between snark and humor or even meanness. Some are better at picking it up than others.

That said, it’s horribly sad when people show you their ugly side, especially when it’s completely unknown as to why it appeared in the first place.

As esteemed colleague @B00ger said, we all have bad days, and sometimes those things trigger threads and posts in an awful way. When it's from a guy who is well established sometimes I PM to see if everything is alright, but I do offer a tad of latitude. I would hope they see their ways and come around for a mea culpa. I have done that.
