I guess I'm at the age where I need to do the occasional physical. This is the first time since high school that I intend to be in the same place, same job, etc for the long term so I'd like to establish with a PCP in the Hillsborough-ish area.

We have any doctors on here who do this? Anyone you recommend?

Thanks all.

I can't help, but I'd advise you to look into the difference between a DO and a MD type doctor. A MD is a better living through drugs type doctor, the other isn't. You decide what you prefer.

Find some old guy that will listen to what you say. My MD has about as many miles on him as I do. He listens to what I say, tells me what he thinks should happen and then leaves the decision up to me without any pressure or judgement. He knows my feelings about different treatment and respects my wishes. He and I have been doing well for over 25 years and a few antibiotics are the only thing he has ever prescribed.

I had the same doctor for almost 30 years. He up and retired this past April. I have found a new doctor completely different style, but I do like her. I believe she will be straight forward with me and that is what I like. We talked for about 15 minutes before the exam started just feeling each other out. Ask people that live near you or work with you and see who they recommend. After the first visit if you have any hesitation about the doctor move on.

I’d start with the list of doctors that are “in network” with your insurance plan close to you, or if you are 65+ who will take Medicare, because some won’t.

when I have had to find doctors or specialists for myself or my boys I start with a list of folks close by and start making phone calls. The list gets whittled down fast because they either aren’t taking new patients, or aren’t in network with my insurance.

Its getting tough to find independent docs who arent under the big names like Novant. I found one in S. Charlotte who is indi and isnt posted. And my dentist is a bona fide gun nut. Pm me if you need recommendations in CLT

I switched to UNC from Puke after too many bizarre medical administrations. Dr. Min at Weaver Dairy Rd. He's a hard ass Puritan compared to my former hippy doc, who I really liked. He told me to get off Ambien and Adderal or get somebody else. Ambien indicated in Altzheimer's (sp). I got enough of that. Adderal heart something. I'm such a clean liver now! Oh, and the kidneys? There's some really cute Indian docs there too that seem very sharp. Women are proven to be better docs according to my female daughter in public health. She should know, huh?

Yeahhhhh..... not so sure about that as a blanket statement. A lot of dudes are OK with having women as PCPs. Not me, but a lot are.

The relationship is the most important thing, regardless if it's UNC, Duke, Novant, or Docs-R-Us. If you can't have a good relationship then you aren't going to be pleased.

@Sevenshot , I am a Duke guy because it works best my Duke insurance, but when I was in Hillsborough I went to Orange Family Medical Group (now a UNC affiliate). The docs that are there were there when I used them 30 years ago...Artie Axelbank and Klein, I was happy with them both. The PA Theresa Ramos, I used to work with her in the Duke ED. She's great if you are OK with mid-levels and seeing a chick.

Interesting bias against female medical practioners. Any specific reasons?

Honest. It’s weird facing anyone once a year, having them hold your balls and telling you to cough, then doing an about face, bending over and being examined from the inside.

Plus, I find myself surrounded by smart women in my life but none of them ever seem to understand what I’m talking about. I’d like for my doctor to perhaps at least pretend like he knows what I’m talking about.

Great thread
I had an old school , real old, Dr ~10 years ago he retired. I’m 55 & haven’t seen a PCD since.
Any recommendations for the Cary/Apex/Holly Springs/Raleigh area?

As background, my family has had really great experiences with UNC urgent care in Cary. We would go there for anything other than routine planned annual visits. UNC also has one in Holly Springs, next to the hospital they are building there. They also have primary care practices, family medicine I think they call it. They’ve got them all over. Check for Cary and Holly Springs.

Bias against? Nope, not at all. They are better listeners and are more compassionate for sure. But a blanket statement that they are better than men....well, I don't like blanket statements.

In my post I also mentioned Theresa Ramos, a PA, whom I know. She's as good as any dude. But I prefer having male docs, for me.

I'm old fashioned too as far as wanting a man doctor. Women listen better. They are more interested, open intellectually to big picture diagnosis as well as current up to date science. More empathetic, patient, etc. This has all been proven, supposedly. According to my daughter, LOL!

Yeah, to each their own. I have seen female docs flat-out 'own' their male contemporaries for sure. The ortho who rebuilt my shoulder, she had been the team ortho for the NY Giants. She is a great surgeon. But a primary care doc, for me, is a dude. My PCP will always be a dude.

I guess I am the odd man out here- I prefer a woman cupping my balls and sticking her finger up my ass!

I have a good PA that I see in Holly Springs. She doesn't rush me thru, listens to what i am saying/ asking. She talks about different treatments and out come from each. When something is beyond what she can handle, she is good about moving me up the food chain to a specialist. She also understands how the insurance game works- I was in for a physical the other day but was 1 month early and ins would have not covered it. She coded it as an ongoing problem so it was covered.
