So I went to the range this weekend and shot a few of the cans that rarely see any action. Specifically, the GM45 by Gemtech and the Surfire 7.62 Mini Socom and full size Socom. These cans are really loud. If my only goal was to get things quiet...... these dang sure would not be the ones for the job. If these are hearing safe I would be surprised. Not having buyers remorse, just coming to grips with the money spent and the results gained.

I first assumed this was going to be the case when the .300 blk bolt gun could be heard easily by a herd of dear at 150 yds. rasslefrassenkrablenabbin(#&@$^%*

as you can see there is little difference in length from the .45 on the left and the 7.62 on the right. as my dad would say....."Not nary one of them is quiet".

Are you shooting subs? When ever I shoot supersonics through my 9mm can (either 300blk or 9mm) it is right on the verge of what I would call hearing safe so I always wear my muffs, but subs through my bolt action are movie quiet.

I've always told people looking at cans that Surefire are usually the most expensive, and the loudest. They have some other nice attributes...but not the ones I'm after.

I'm not a fan of Gemtech pistol cans. I heard a rumor that some SF cans were received for testing (can't remember by who anymore) and sent back because they were so loud they were thought to be defective. I'm sure I butchered the real story but that was the gist of it

I know a guy who loaned a guy a thing to load some stuff to make some other stuff quiet......... but the guy who had it loaned is not the guy who has done the thing that lets the guy who did the loaning show him how to use it. :rolleyes:o_Oo_O;)

Cooler weather is coming.
That makes outdoor projects easier.

First, I have no idea how much experience you have with cans. But here are some of my insights.

Supersonic rounds are all going to be loud. It has nothing to do with the can, it's the round.
Semi auto is loud, even subsonic, compared to bolt or single shot.
Factory subsonics may not be actual subsonics. Remington 300blk is LOUD in subsonic because they are not all subs. They load them so close some of them go super.
If you want good subs, reload.

A supersonic load out of a 300 blk can will be heard 150 yards away. The best you can do is get it down to just the sonic crack of the round coming out of the can. And that sound is about as much as a .22 rifle unsuppressed. You can make it hearing safe, but not quiet. A sub sonic round is a different story. I shot over a dogs head to scare it off my property last deer season. I was 30 yards away shooting a suppressed H&R handi rifle in 300blk. The round hitting the tree is what the dog looked at. Never even looked my direction. It sounds about like a nail gun, mostly air coming out the can after the bullet.

The 7.62 mini is known to be a pretty loud can, which sucks for 300blk, but would be nice to take the edge off a .308 or 7.62x39 semi that would be loud anyway with a full size can.

I really like all the sages here. I feel better after being consoled a little bit. I think really could use a better education. You know, public schools and all I do OK, but I may need some help on things that go boom.

Should have asked one of the dealers on hear. I've never heard a SF can that I liked. Even had some SS transfers of SF cans and the customer asked me if he did something wrong when he shot them the first time. I politely told him it was the SF silencer that was just loud. They didn't have much flash and are pretty light but still not as quiet as most others. That customer now owns cans from Griffin, Sico, and AAC. He has been very pleased with all his purchases through JKSilencers.com and I'm grateful for it.

I was impressed with the Dead Air Sandman S, I was in a lane beside of an AR10 in 308, it really knocked the bark of the gun down, though the longer ones suppressed a lot better.

Go to a demo day, or find out when @BigWaylon is going out shooting. Lol
