Low-carb/high-fat diets and diabetes

Yep, I did it. I am no longer considered Type 2. Lost 65 lbs. "Keto" diet is basically what they are describing although I didn't see reference to it. I skimmed the article and didn't read it word for word.

I've been told Keto is a little hard on your kidneys if your at risk. I was told that by a nephrologist so milage may vary.

I did straight Keto diet for a year. Lost 25#'s and my A1C was 5.7 after being as high as 9. Now doing Lo carb hi fat and go for blood work and check up nxt week. Changed BP meds too.

@Sp00ks , not all low carb 'diets' drive the body into keto; it depends on the ratio of fats and protein. The lower the protein, the higher the ketoacidosis because the body will 'eat' muscle. A higher fat content and moderate protein can blunt it some. Yes, it's hell on kidneys. Not everyone can/should go on LCHF/HP diets.

Interestingly, although these diets will certainly help people with type 1 DM, there are far fewer benefits.

Agreed, they mentioned 20g in there somewhere which is kick you into ketosis level. I was pretty strict Keto for nearly 6 years. Type 2 was only one of the reasons. I still watch my carb intake and weight but much more relaxed these days, A1C hasn't increased thus far.

What about possibly compromised liver? I really want to try LCHF and then move to keto to lose some weight.
I've been increasing my activity incrementally since being out of work, but my body only lets me do so much.

ETA- and to liver part needs some explanation, I guess.
Short version, sent to gastro doc because of weird blood test results. Gastro doc does blood work, then ultrasound and report shows lvl 4 liver damage.
Go ahead with endoscopic ultrasound, my understanding was to view the liver better. Follow up with same gastro doc and he's wanting to do a bike duct reduction.
I said waitadamnminute, what about my liver? He says, oh those are just some bright spots. Wanted to push the bd reduction. I told him in no uncertain terms I wasn't a cash cow and he could figure on not seeing me again. Not so damn short, lol.

ETA2- wife said that I even scared her a little with my direct confrontation towards the doc, lol. I was pissed.

Sort of similar here.

1st. be careful as you will get black listed, that shit is real. My wife went through it years ago. Freaking quacks. I have blasted my Doc once. I had to reminder her she runs a business and works for me, not the other way around. That conversation worked btw.

Like you, I still don't know if my kidneys are going to fail in the future.. I think doctors get so caught up in chasing the issue, they forget there is a person on the other end of it all.

I can't even suggest the effects of Keto on the Liver. But the weight loss sure wouldn't be bad on the liver. It will be hard to get an answer on that because most Dr's aren't Keto friendly. AHA diet has been taught for so long... You can't possibly follow the AHA diet, you will weigh 500 lbs. "LCHF" is Keto, you don't have to move on to it. It just depends on how low your carbs are.

There is a documentary on the American Heart Association dietary suggestions and if your interested, I'll try and find it. I can't even remember the name at this point.
r/keto is a fantastic place to learn more about Keto. There are even a couple Dr's that visit that sub reddit. Do NOT go to the facebook page, those folks are worse than vegans.

My Non PHD opinion. Go ahead and reduce your carb intake, it's not going to hurt. A lot of carbs are empty calories anyway. Start tracking your nutrition. That will make a huge difference. Keto is still basically calories in vs. calories out, it's just a tool to make that easier.

I went full blown keto because of my situation at the time. I lost 45 lbs in less than 90 days. Out of the diabetic range in about 6 months. My Doctor: "That is the most miraculous turn around I have ever seen in my career as a doctor, I don't care how you did it"

Sorry, I didn't mean for that to be so long. If you would like any additional info, I would be happy to talk to you. I'm not professional, just a middle aged guy that didn't take care of myself growing up and now I'm paying the price like most of us. What I did (Keto) worked for me and I never dieted a day in m life.

Last blood test, all numbers were in the normal perimeters. I'm proud of that. Been a long 5-6 years.

I started intermittent fasting and keto June 1st. Weight 212 at 5'11" with pants a tight 38 waist.

This morning I weigh 176 and wear a lose 34 about to drop to 33 or 32in. That's 35 pounds in less than two months.

I eat once a day at dinner. I take losts of potassium citrate and magnesium citrate and other vitamins and vinegar.

I plateaued twice and took one day off each time.

First week sucked. You just have to embrace the suck.

Check out youtube for dr. Berg and intermittent fasting.

That is some awesome success.
I just started on the keto diet on July 15th, So far I am down 13 lbs. I had a few days where I felt unwell but it wasn't too bad. Today was a terrible day though, absolutely no energy and so cranky I couldn't stand myself. Did you experience this and if so, how long does it last?

I don't recall cranky at all nor do I recall no energy. Make sure your getting your electrolytes. They are often overlooked and very important. I presume your drinking a shit ton of water as well?

Some people do get very low energy going in. Are you doing the vinegar lemon drink twice a day? That helps a LOT.

My recipe for what its worth, and I'm down 36lbs to where I want to be:

Twice a day

1 tablespoon vinegar "with the mother".
1 tablespoon lemon juice
20ml L-Carnitine 3000mg (comes with cup) this is berry flavor and hides the awe ful taste of below.
1/2 teaspoon potassium citrate
1/2 teaspoon magnesium citrate
1 scoop creatine.
Some bubbly water drink.

If you want links to products let me know and will post.

@Goofyfoot2001 This is basically an electrolyte mix, correct? Congrats on your loss sir.

I took supplements and it got me through.

Make sure its magnesium citrate.

Never trust a fart early on.

Yes, I am a big water drinker anyway, I usually drink 7 or 8 bottles every day.

I haven't been drinking anything extra, just a Pepsi zero with breakfast and water the rest of the day. I have been looking at some of the supplements on Amazon, I really need a one and done solution. I think I am going to try this one from Amazon:

Keto K1000 Electrolyte Powder | Boost Energy & Beat Leg Cramps | No Maltodextrin or Sugar | Raspberry Lemon | 50 Servings

Does this look like a good alternative?

Just need to clarify that there is a big difference in Ketosis(good) and Ketoacidosis(bad). They are not one in the same.

My A1C has crept up, doctor is concerned that I need to make some adjustments.

She suggested fasting and Berbidine and fiber.

I had been fasting but been slack, so going back to 16+ hour fasts.

Down 32 lbs as of today. I feel so much better since I started this diet.
Going to the doctor for a re-checkup in a couple of weeks so I will see what he thinks.
My blood sugar levels have been lower that I have seen them for 5 years or more (lower 70s) but I am concerned about where my cholesterol levels are now, They have been borderline for the last 2 visits so hopefully they haven't climbed any higher.

Update: Down 41# as of now. I have slacked off a few times and even had a few beers a couple of times. I no longer feel bad and actually feel like I have more energy than normal, sleep is especially improved. Hoping I can get to 50# down before Christmas.

I'm curious about the cholesterol levels, you mentioned some concern above. How did that turn out?

Down 49# as of yesterday, Looks like I will be able to make the Christmas goal.
That being said, I did break the diet long enough to have a couple servings of stuffing yesterday with my turkey, but I am back on it again today. I have a rescheduled Drs' appt. on Dec. 7th so we will see how that goes. Hope the cholesterol numbers are down.

Wow, Drs. visit went much better than expected. My cholesterol is down from 238 to 184. My A1c went from 9.2 to 6.1. Kidney function is perfect. 50# down total now. Not sure why the cholesterol went down but I am quite happy with that result. I will definitely be sticking with this diet.

Glucometer said 373 back in July.
Doctor had a [emoji90] fit!!! Told me I should have immediately gone to ER. I didn’t. He was pissed!!
A1C was 12.1

Anyhoo....

Here we are 5 months later, average daily glucometer reading has been 130-140, down about 50 pounds, trynna get down to 275 by May 24 next year. 340 as of last Friday.

Cut carbs to less than 20g per day. Did that for 3 weeks. The first week was HELL!!
Once it stayed below 200 for 3 days consecutively, opened up to 30g per day.
I got it below 150 for 3 days, I opened up to 50g or less per day. I occasionally go over that, but I compensate the next day, and I’ve managed to keep my daily number averaging between 130 and 140.

I feel 100 times better than I did in June/July.

Good work so far, keep it up. Work on that fasting BS.

Don't mess around higher than 10 A1c can have permanent damage to body function/organs.

Ketoacidosis can kill you quicker than trying to suck start a shotgun

- I'm type 1. Let me say this as politely as I can. All you bastards have a 2nd chance, don't screw it up. No, going back when you move up to 1st place.

I'm 33 on a cholesterol and BP meds. My cholesterol is 100 and my BP (110/75, if I remember right) is perfect, if I didn't have type 1. Because of that, at older age I have a higher risk of liver/heart/kidney diesese. The small dose of meds is to help my odds of not getting anything like that.

I say this with upmost respect and love for you guys.

Yeah, low carb/keto diet really works. Several years ago, I reached a high of 315lbs. For a 5'7" guy, this was terrible. I was experiencing sleep apnea, easy fatigability, shortness of breath.
A year later, I dropped 130lbs of fat. I did some light strength training, just to maintain lean muscle mass. Aside from that, I did some casual walking 3x a week.
I still indulge in carbs, don't get me wrong...but I try to limit that for most of the year. Then splurge during the holidays.

I don't have diabeetus but was interested in what my glucouse and ketones were doing on IF. I rarely get over 100 and generally 90 or so on the glucose. I guess I'm now at the point where I burn my ketones so that is always around .5 and haven't shown any color change on pee sticks since I lost the 40lbs. Yeah, I feel excellent.

What kind of ketone sticks are you using, and where are they sold? I need to stay on top of that as well

Unless you are diabetic your glucose and ketones will be fairly static unless there are some unusual events. One's blood sugar just doesn't "drop." My mother-in-law, she's...well, a piece of work. She bitches all the time about her "sugar dropping". No, stupid, you're hangry. She could afford to miss a meal or two.

The Charlie Foundation has a good amount of info on ketogenic diets and they've been around for quite some time. Not only for diabetes but also epilepsy.

Saw this thread and decided to bring it back to life or revive it.
Started the keto diet this past June 6. The first week or so I felt pretty tired and sluggish (keto flu). I was at 260# and now over 105 days or so later I weigh 223# and really do feel great. No more knee pain. I have lost 3.5 inches off my waist, so most of my pants don’t fit anymore, had to purchase new. My goal is to get to my desired weight of 210#. It’s really taken a lot of self control, sacrifice and self discipline, but it really works. I also walk 2.5 miles per day. It’s been a real life style change and I don’t think I will ever be able to go back to eating like I did before ever again. I plan to stay low on carbs and low on sugars. My wife and I both gave up caffeine as well, decaf works for us.
Now I eat just to satiate my appetite and usually bypass lunch. Food tastes better, I eat much less, and have more energy.
I suppose I need to get a physical and blood work done as it’s been a few years since I have seen a Doctor.

I did great on keto but found it unsustainable. You can only eat so much cauliflower, broccoli and nuts Trying to stay low carb and low to no sugar. My A1C has gone up but so has my age. My father was diabetic and his father late in life. I will (try) and do what I can to stay off the needle. All the diabetics I know and I know a lot, are on the needle from once a week to 4 times a day. Hate needles.

Congrats! make sure the Doc checks your electrolytes (magnesium, sodium, potassium) Stay away from the Keto facebook group.

I've been Keto since 2015. I've slipped, gained some back, got back at it etc. but my wife and I always watch our carb intake. I'd like to loose another 10 lbs.

Low carb products have come a long way over the past 5 years. It's still about calories in and out for sure but I started for diabetes and weight loss. I get virtually zero sugar intake.

I have learned that if you try and substitute for things you liked pre-diet, you will fail. I do not like Cauliflower so no mashed potatoes, pizza crust etc. just nasty.... My wife has come up with some pretty creative dishes.

Hey Thanks, it’s been quite a journey. We are still leaning a lot and as mentioned it’s become a life style change for us. You are right it’s about calories. I try and keep my caloric intake below 1800 cal per day and never over 2000. I have never felt better. My wife has also come up with some great dishes as well, and I agree cauliflower mashed…nope.

Congratulations to all of you. I started a low carb diet in June 2020 and have lost 75 pounds so far. I went from 273 to 198, 40” to 34” waist. I had no chronic health issues but I was tired of being a fat a$$. I have maintained my weight for about 2 months, no real changes in diet. Plateaus are real so don’t get discouraged. I am looking at some HIIT gyms near me, I certainly need to be more active to help me reach my goal weight of 170. I never eat breakfast and often forget to eat lunch. Food is now a necessity, not a focus.

I still do Keto but eat too much, hence the need to loose another 10 lbs... Keep up the good work.

Well done, Congrats!! That is great progress.

I'm sitting at about 179 currently and feel like a blob. (220 at my heaviest, 162 at my lowest) I do a walk/jog thing almost 5 days a week of 2-3.5 miles depending on the time I have and how I feel. It helps, makes me feel better, not sure how many calories I'm burning but it's good for the heart.

Excellent progress Chris! Good for you. Yes I had a few plateaus and was wondering why? Onward to your goal!!
