Thoughts on having barrel chopped , sight move back , thread and pin & weld a muzzle device to maintain “non SBR” status
Project rifle is a MAK90
Any downsides ?

My general rule of thumb is don't permanently alter an import, especially one that's been banned. But your gun, your choice. What's your thought behind wanting to do this? Do you just want a shorter barrel? Alternatively, you could look at something like a Romanian M10, or a PSAK-104 or AK-E to get you a factory-built, SBR-ready AK with a shorter sight radius.

Downsides would include worsened accuracy if the chop and/or recrown doesn't go right, and the possibly of lessened resale value - any future buyers, especially Chinese AK buyers, generally aren't fans of Bubba'd guns.

If you do this, make sure it's all done right. I looked at a used AK a few years ago that was previously set up in SBR configuration. The genius owner removed it from the NFA registry by pinning and welding a muzzle device on his own. The only problem ... he drilled his hole for the pin all the way through the barrel and into the bore.

thought is for a shorter handier sized rifle, I want the muzzle threaded.
I have this and everything else is bringing super high prices If you can find it
The shop that will do this is a top tier, they manufacture a line of suppressors - I have zero worry about their ability to do it right

If you do plan to SBR it at some point that makes some sense, but if not then the desire for a shorter, handier sized rifle is kind of a moot point if federal law dictates a 16" barrel on a rifle. So by going this route you'd still wind up with a rifle that's the same length as before, but without the ability to deliver the full potency of 7.62x39 ammo and arguably a worsened sight picture due to the closer front and rear sights. If compactness is what you're after, what about finding an x39 pistol and leave the MAK as-is?

If I was to mess with a Mak 90 in any real capacity, I'd make it a Spiker.

Im sure if you wanted something shorter some one would likely ( and glady!) Trade a Romanian "Paratrooper" RH-10, which would be great for your needs. Or maybe even a Draco ( Romanian!).... likely with more going your way.

If you just WANT a Mak90 done up this way, its your gun, go wild, its something different!

But if you want something that fits the bill functionality wise, AND you dont want to mess with "collectable" stuff, you can do better without the potential regret.

I agree with everyone else...I wouldn't cut a MAK90 at all. RH-10 are OK but if you really want to go that route with an amazing AK I would suggest an Arsenal 107CR.

For the MAK90, I agree a spiker would be an easy conversion and no permanent alteration would be done.
