6F3A66F8-B790-4691-BDD8-958C647D0483.jpeg My kid killed a mandarin duck on our property yesterday... anyone know if this is a common harvest in east NC.. I’ve heard of them being in the western part of the state.
Check out the pic... no he didn’t shoot it in the subdivision the pic was taken at.... he went alone and was picking my youngest up at his girlfriends... had him take the pic when he got there.. duck was killed in a small beaver pond up in the swampy woods of the backside of our property.... I have no reason to think it was not a wild bird other than I’ve NEVER seen one or heard of one until he started blowing my phone up.. any thoughts???

Most likely that is a duck that was bought from a hatchery and escaped from an owner. Mandarins IIRC can only breed with other Madarins. Unless someone has released a lot of them in a particular area this is a stray who went rogue. They prefer small ponds vs larger bodies of water.
