I was at Johns sons funeral. I’ve never been so humbled in my life. I served in the Corps and knew his family through my wife. As marines, we never change. I helped a young grunt in the bathroom who was wounded in the fight that took Robert. His wheelchair got crossed up and he was pinned in. He commented “it’s like a god damned scene from Austin Powers in here!”
We shared a laugh, got him straight and someone asked if he was good to go. He replied, “yeah, I’ll probably get a challenge coin from one of the joint chiefs of staff, that’ll probably fix the two legs I’m missing.”
All those kids swapped stories in the restroom and it was probably one of the greatest moments I’ll ever be involved in.
We all know the risk, we all love what we do And did.
