Melee defense options

Spikes on the ball would be nice for ripping and tearing, but those might work.
You mean a mornin star. They are wicked looking, but I’d be afraid of it getting stuck.

I've wanted a Dart for a while. Do you like the build quality?
Did you study under Doug Marcaida? I like him.

I'm not a super knife guy, but it seems on par with my SOG 'slim jim' knives and my Delica. This one doesn't get used for anything, I don't treat it like a utility knife that's also for defensive purposes so it's (thankfully) never had to be used for anything except scaring @Sneakymedic once.

I did get the trainer set, and the training knife is really nice. It is exactly like the real thing just with a rounded off blade. Very solid and works exactly as the real one does.

I've seen Doug's videos, but never trained with him.

I was skeeert. He's like a ninjer. Actually more disappointing, he was up in my personal space and didn't kiss me.

Stabbing someone is an intimate thing. ;)

Melee? I don't do crowds.

Unless the Food Lion counts, and I only go in the morning.

Too easy to get stuck.

I have a cheap SOG tomahawk and a CKRT tomahawk. Me and one of my friends have goofed around throwing them in to a dead pine tree up on our property in W. Jefferson. They can get a little suck. So if you go hatchet or tomahawk have a backup. But they do make some serious gashes.

I have this old red neck tomahawk that used to belong to my elderly neighbor who passed away. Have to get a pic of it sometime.

He took a hammer handle, notched it, and bolted in a sickle bar tooth. Also has a handy clothes line carrying strap duct taped on. As I understand it, he used to carry it with him when he was working out in the field. Not sure what he was planning on defending himself from with it, but it's a neat little keepsake from him.

As for me, machetes work well enough for felling small trees, probably be ok in a pinch, but I have a couple "real" swords as well in case someone breaks in my house and I can't get to a firearm.

A naked man with a full size shield swinging a viking sword with abandon would probably scare off most intruders :)

Here's the redneck tomahawk.

Nerd!

All the cool kids play Pathfinder, you should know that. :)

Pathfinder is for minmaxers.

As for melee choices, I like a good spear (currently having to make do with a Cold Steel Bushman that sockets onto a shaft and makes a fair spear) and a Cold Steel tomahawk. I really would like one of their assegais.

Understood, but (i) one doesn't have to follow that crowd and (ii) any system can be exploited. Have you looked at the PFv2 play test out?

No, I tried PF a couple of times and didn't really like it. I'm more of an indy press oddity sort of of guy.

Sorry, just couldn't let that one go by. ;)
You're both nerds, but that's ok.

I used to play DND but all my friends had kids and now spend their free time at t-ball games.
I don't even know what edition it's up to now.

Fifth, which is actually really accessible and decent .

Here's some of my stuff.

My "Irish Viking" sword. These style swords are neat, with nice wide, double edged blades but the pommel means you have to use a modified "handshake" grip. It's not the most natural thing in the world but you get used to it eventually.

Cold Steel hawk I modified. It's not meant for throwing but I've gotten pretty good at sticking it in tree rounds.

This is an old tractor part. It's very heavy, and makes a great redneck mace. Handle needs some work, I just wrapped it for now.

Cold Steel seax machete. Had this for a number of years and have used it a lot out in the yard and the woods. Could definitely be used for self defense in a pinch.
