Just saw it tonight with most of my family and some friends from church. I caught some infantry weapon inaccuracies, but they were fairly minor. I knew enough about the war in the Pacific that I was able to follow the story well, but someone who knew nothing about it might have gotten lost in some of the switching around between battles, ships, sides, etc.

Overall, I was pleased and thought it was well worth the price of the movie ticket. Initially, I couldn't picture Woody Harrelson as Admiral Nimitz, but I thought he did a good job. Our family gives it two thumbs up and I'm happy to see stories of the bravery from WWII being told to the younger generation.

Also, I thought it provided a sympathetic view of the Japanese sailors without being PC. Those men were fighting and dying for their country, too. While I make no apologies for the Japanese actions up to and including the war, I can respect that many of them fought and died honorably.

Good flick.

Thanks for the write up!
My friend's wife works for the Navy museum in DC and they got a sneak peek at it, they both really enjoyed it (he's a history buff too, they're both former Air Force).

And I liked that last part about the soldiers. While they were the enemy, the soldiers were fighting a war for many of the same reasons we fight then as now.

I’m having a hard time getting past the fact the previews look more like a video game than a movie.

Casting Woody Harrelson as Nimitz,..... to me, it just didn't fit. Neither did I get Dennis Quaid as Halsey.

I gave the movie an, "eh, it's not bad" rating, but that's about it. I felt like they relied a little heavy on the CGI to make up for other areas they could have done better in. I also think the whole story of Midway and everything that led up to it is too much to try and tell in a 2 hour movie. IMO they should have done a part 1 and 2. I think most people will come away thinking it was just a good WW2 movie without really understanding all of the different pieces of the puzzle and how they came together in the end for an American victory. Just my .02 cent.

I agree that it would have been better as a two parter.

I don't dig the CGI/gaming effects. I will wait for Red Box.

I am, however, very much looking forward to Danger Close and The Last Full Measure.

I see that it is rated PG-13, I have a 12 y/o that is a history buff and his great grandfather served in the pacific. Do you think it would be appropriate for him? I am good with the war content, I would prefer not to have any nudity for him, didn't know if had a love story spin like Pearl Harbor.

Nope. No love story spin, although it shows some husband/wife dynamics out of the bedroom and fully clothed. Actually thought that was a good thing, as it is part of the historic story. PG-13 rating is for violence, blood, some charred bodies, etc. I took my whole family, including my 11 year old daughter. She can be sensitive to war violence (she was really bothered by the spike booby trap scene and the dog getting killed in John Wayne's "The Green Berets", for instance), but she did fine with this one.

If you’ve never used it before, check out the Parents Guide on IMDB. It gets pretty detailed on what to expect in a variety of categories. It does show None for this movie. (You click See All to get the details)

Waiting for the movie to start, we had a long conversation about today being Pearl Harbor day. How important this naval battle was, and how our grandfather's and great grandfather's were awesome men.

This is currently on HBO. Added it to the DVR over the weekend and just hit Play.

Watched it, it was ok.
I dont recommend it to others, but I didnt have to turn it off early or anything.
I did NOT like the guy who played Best, just didnt like him. And since he's in it a lot then I just wasnt pleased much with it.
I liked Harrelson.
I wish Doolittle had been in it more. I, honestly, felt like they put him in for...well, filler? I mean, it's five minutes or so and that's it. Why?

I liked the action scenes ok, but outside of that I just wasnt all that stoked on it.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo is a truly amazing story, and should be given it's own due, in the same manner as Band of Brothers. God Bless The Aviators. Their sacrifices and exploits once the survivors reached China are epic.

I can remember seeing the cabinet with the chalices in Arnold Hall at the Air Force Academy when we were stationed there in the eighties. Seeing the upside down cups always humbled me.
