Found out yesterday that Ruger ARs are not mil-spec. I bought a Moe stock and found out it was .020" ID to small for my buffer tube.

I thought everyone had pretty much dropped commercial tubes. Ruger using commercial really surprises me.

It was a couple (or more) years back, but my experience was with a .308 Bushmaster.

I've since sold the rifle, but still have the original stock on a shelf.

Commercial tube was designed for T6061 aluminum has its larger diameter and cheaper to produce. Milspec is for T7075 aluminum which is stronger and smaller diameter. Both have about the same strength. Back ends are different with commercial having a taper/slant and Milspec 90% corner

It must be an older model. Every model currently on their website lists "Mil-Spec buffer tube"

Good news is it should be an easy fix.

Only commercial tube I have encountered is on my VR80 shotgun. I agree that it seems silly to have two specs for the same platform.
