I had a SPC with a Masters degree that worked for me. Most of my Soldiers had college degrees.

I worked with a corpsman that was halfway through a PhD program in microbiology (he eventually made Chief). Not only was he one of the smartest guys I have ever met, he was a PT stud.

I try to impress on others, not just my own kids, that a well grounded education means you're less likely to be at the mercy of others who would take advantage of your ignorance.

You may hate chemistry...but understanding the basics of chemistry means you're less likely to fall for "snake oil" claims.

You may hate physics...but understanding the basics of physics means you're less likely to fall for stupid conspiracy scams.

You main hate math...but understanding the basics of math means you're more likely to understand and appreciate the marvels people take for granted and less likely to be scammed by those who would use ignorance in math against you.

You may hate history...but understanding history means you're more likely to understand human nature and see where we're going wrong.

The lament of "what do I need to know this for?" is the cry of the willfully ignorant...and they are usually the first to be taken advantage of and walked all over throughout their lives.
