Mobile as a base station

So I would like to have something on my desk that is more than a hand held but really can't come up with the $$$ for a base station - plus I am just a beginner. If I have a regulated 12V power supply and a good mobile, along with an antenna outside - is this the poor man's solution?

That's what I did. Don't know if it's frowned upon or not. Works pretty decent so far. We'll, I am on my 3rd power supply in 4 years, so discounting that it hasn't been too bad.

A lot of people use mobile radios as base. Nothing wrong with that. Easy to take portable if need be.

Buy a good linear supply. It should last 20 yrs before it needs electrolytics changed.

Sure! A mobile is a good choice for home use.
