Modern AK

Modern is a loaded term. The AK-103 looks modern but fires a round invented before the transistor radio. When I think of a modern AK that'd obtainable now it'd be a lightly used Polish Archer on Gunbroker. It has all of the most modern updates to the internal system operating system, better ergo's, effective optics system, true chrome-lined cold hammer forged and proofed barrel, comes from a true military lineage and a TDP that is still being improved. Not only that, the cartridge it fires is also under steady development with the design of the M855A1 round and the Mk 262.

One could say a Galil ACE is a "modern" AK aswell...... but really, it depends as others have said.

Alot can be customized but at its core it will always be an AK.

THE REAL QUESTION....

What are you looking to do?

I happened into some 7.62 ammo. I'm wondering if there's a nice reliable and accurate gun available to shoot it with. I would like a synthetic (plastic?) stock and a rail on top.

Also, I would like one that's in stock somewhere.... or at least available within 100 miles if it's used (or a recent build).

Also, I don't need a 300 yard tack driver. I have other guns for that. A good SHTF gun will do.... something I can put a 1 or 2 MOA reflex sight on.

Good rifle, good price. Looks to be still available.

OP, Zastava USA builds a solid factory import product that's still somewhat affordable and comes back in stock often even in 2020. Sign up for in stock alerts from Atlantic Firearms or another retailer, or via gun.deals.

You'll notice the top rail on the pistol. You can mount a rear sight picatinny adapter if you wish, or go with a quality removable side mount like this one from RS Regulate:

I just signed up for notification of stock in several sites. But everybody is out of these guns.

@two fingers nothing is certain and things may change for the (even) worse tomorrow, but over the last several months Zastava's been regularly coming in with refreshed stock of multiple variants of its ZPAP series. So, hopefully that trend continues.

Outside of some early minor rivet issues, these things have earned a great reputation. Do note though since this appears to be your first AK, if you go the Zastava route, you'll need to source Yugo/Serbian-specific items like stocks, handguards, optic mounts, scout mounts like the Ultimak, etc. These pattern AKs aren't fully interchangeable with most standard Russian/Romanian/Bulgarian/etc. stamped AKs.

I'm kinda particular to wood myself and have loved mine so far.
