How would you guys react

Well, if the guy knocking was a deputy in uniform I'd ask for a warrant and call my lawyer after locking the door, and I might call 911 for good measure.

Also part of the group was an off-duty member of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Lea says Deputy J.T. Kita, who works in the detention division, was in uniform and armed.

Deputy in uniform knocks at my door:
Me “ Do you have a warrant? No? Then I do not answer questions, participate in interviews without the presence of my lawyer. Since you’re not here serving a warrant then I’m going to ask you to leave my property.”

armed mob shows up at my door I don’t answer their knocks, i arm myself then I hit the panic button on my home alarm and call 911...

Can't you just pump a shotgun and scare everyone off?

But honestly, that sounds like its grab the M14 response time.

I would have seriously contemplated breaking Barney's foot. His foot vs me slamming my door with my shoulder would not end well. I do also believe that might be able to be stretched into a kidnapping charge. He was preventing her from getting away. Depends on how broadly they want to define confine or restrain.

That would be a far stretch. If your stretching for a charge the highest in my opinion is B&E intent to terrorize depending on exactly what happened. Then second degree trespass for sure with other possible communication of threats, assault by pointing guns possibly depending on their actions.

No, no... Get with the program.

I would have asked him if those were steel toed, just before I broke it or shot it.

More info in the newspaper this morning.
Jordan Kita, a detention officer with the New Hanover Sheriff’s Office, is charged with misdemeanor breaking or entering, forcible trespassing and willful failure to discharge duties, District Attorney Ben David said during a press conference Friday that was live streamed on Facebook by TV station WECT.

Kita has since been fired, according to a statement David read from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

The former deputy is accused of going to Shepard’s home “while armed and in uniform in a county where he was not dully sworn in and in furtherance of personal — not law enforcement — purposes,” David said.

A second man, Austin Wood, faces charges, David said, for “going armed to the terror of the public,” which bars North Carolina citizens from arming themselves “for the purpose of terrifying others.”

I'd likely be so shaken I'd be afraid I might have a 12ga AD into someone's foot. An accident. Oops.

I wouldnt of had an accident. The guy was trying to come into my home and terrorize me and my family with a mob behind him.
There would have been matching bullet holes. One in his foot and another in my floor.

This is why ordinary people need a belt-fed SAW.

FIFY.

I'm actually surprised at the outcome since the article posted by OP says, "A spokesperson for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they are conducting an internal affairs investigation into whether any policies were violated."

That is normally code for "We are not going to investigate the conduct to determine whether the law was violated."

Seems to be getting more and more common as cops are willingly enforcing dubious ‘executive orders” regarding Covid 19 and The People are getting more visibly resistant.

I will let my buddy Will answer that....
Willem channeling his inner Sgt. Elias! I love it! (Plus, it was a great movie in its own right!)

Some irony as the media tries to spin the racial angle is that it appears they were looking for a black girl and the deputy was family in some way. While they were in the wrong I think lumping them in as a lynch mob isn’t quite right unless there is other evidence. Which is what the media is implying.

I am from Pender county and had never heard of the “Avendale” community and I know some fairly obscure places. It’s a newish development on the edge of the 17 corridor with a lot of transplants. Though these idiots could have been natives. Either way it makes us look bad but I think we have a decent sheriff and a pretty good DA and they made the right call to charge them.

Numb nutz news writers, we get our information from idiots.
“The Shepards are African-American” Due to girth, color, lacking cheekbones, etc they really don't look like Africans that have become naturalized citizens.
“Among the people on the Shepard’s porch demanding answers was a person carrying an assault weapon” Is the BATFE involved since they brought a fully automatic weapon?

The jackwads that stepped on their porch need to be charged with terrorism.

There is a lack of critical thinking by the offenders here. They got lucky no one was hurt by them or in their group. You cant just go around and intimidate people..the former deputy in that group should have known that, as well as the rest of the group.

A lot of dumb-assery here.

I hope they get the book thrown at them. Getting fired is a start, but dude broke some laws.. I would bet several.. and needs to learn some valuable lessons. Family could sue and likely win some big bucks.

Also shame on the media for going right to the race card. Not necessary at all. Its not like these morons showed up in a clan outfit on horseback and burned a cross in their yard.

That all said.....

These fools are really lucky no one shoved a shotgun in their face and left them ventilated on their lawn. Foot in door preventing it from being shut? A lot of folks would then claim that foot as their own, and be within their right..

So much derp here.

It’s still law on the books that you’re permitted to shoot to prevent unlawful entry. This predates HB whatever it was, commonly called castle doctrine.

Exactly..which is something these jack wagons should have taken into account.. they got lucky in some aspects.

I don't open the door, and I was taught not to open the door, and I tell my wife not to open the door. Use the fancy pants alarm panel with the doorbell camera and intercom.
And if it's somebody I don't know and suspect their intentions as being less than honest, I'm at the alarm panel with a gun pointed at the door. Just in case they try to start kicking or something. door comes in, bullets go out.

This is making the news up in Canada, got a screenshot last night from my friend up in Toronto

For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would open the door for a group of strangers late at night. Glad the homeowners are ok - that could have went much worse.
