Mossberg 44 info--found

I've only had the civilian models (a) and (c) and they shot very well with the original sights. Easy to get dime size groups at 30 yards with mid grade ammo. Parts are easy to find and they're really simple to work on. Triggers can be tweaked to the 2 1/2-2 # range safely. Anything lower is iffy. Decent ones are still verty affordable ($300-$350 range).

I don't know of any for sale locally right now. Almost all of the US Property rifles will come with a blade front sight. I have to use a globe and insert front sight to get small groups so if you get on, you may consider doing that. The Lyman 17 series is what most folks use. Last time I looked there were a couple on Gunbroker and if you don't mind doing a little restoration work, they'd be fine.

I have the Stevens Mod 416 U.S. Property Heavy barrel (I am third owner, first was govt. and second was my father in law) Globe front sight. It is a great shooter. I use to use a friends Mossberg 44 and it did very good too and I would not hesitate to own one.

I bought 12 for $75.00 each then it jumped to $95.00 for the last 12 (CMP allowed 12 a year back in 2002-2006) they had the s 100 sights and Lyman Micrometer sights, poor trigger, best suited for 1 st rifle. Overall a deal at $75.00 but keep it for $300+. Did the same with the Center fire rifles CMP wanted to empty their supply fearing another destruction program like Clinton did with the M 14's.
