Hey @Geezer and @BatteryOaksBilly! Sitting here at my hotel in Myrtle with the door locked, cooler full and the EDC close and handy. Should up early enough that the riff raff are still out cold. Any other precautions I should take? Will be at the beach for a v-ball tourney tomorrow and out as quickly as possible.

I was amazed at the mix of trash, ghetto and massively obese people at dinner. We ate quickly and got the heck out of there. Wasn’t sure an extra mag would be enough. :(

I grew up in WV and every year we went down to Myrtle Beach for vacation. Being an adult I'd rather go to other beaches now. The majority of West Virginians, those that can afford to go anywhere, still do go to Myrtle.

I think it's a dang shame how that place has deteriorated into what it has now become.

I’d rather go to the mountains, but there aren’t a lot of beach volleyball tournaments up there. :(

Somebody put in some nice sand volleyball courts about 1/2 mile from my house as the crow flies.

They're right next to an NC DOT prison transfer depot which used to be an NC DOC prison unit up until sometime in the 1990's.

Some days the eye candy is magnificent while driving north on Sandy Ridge Rd. in North High Point.:D

Don’t get me going on the eye candy. I am here with my 12 year old.

But I have been at other events. And many of the coaches are young college players or recent college grads. I am so going to hell for my dirty thoughts. :p

Heard he accidentally bought some fugly Glock and his wife has cut him off. He’s gotta get back in the good graces. :p
Whew...I was worried he’s gonna sell one of his pretty Glocks. :D

The condo we take care of is in Windy Hill/North Myrtle, and is about as safe as you can get as far as Myrtle goes I believe. We we're there six or seven times last year, and no riff raff to speak of. We do stay away from Broadway at the beach, as I have personally known some friends who have had some trouble with people looking for trouble. When we are there at the condo, I always feel safe and have never worried about much while down there. Have fun, keep that head on a swivel, and not just to look at tail, lol.

Yeah, them fat people can be a real danger. o_O

I’m down there about 6-7 times a year for between a weekend and 5 days. I’ve had zero problems. As is my norm virtually everyday, I stay out of/away from anything that may cause “drama”, I’m battening down the hatches at sundown and making sure to keep my powder dry at all times. Everywhere I go in life has areas of ill repute and I find that if I keep my head on a swivel, don’t break eye contact/look meek and generally exude an aura of “not the prey your looking for”, I’m left alone.

Heading there Thursday next week to ride the bike and enjoy the salt/bug free air. Looking forward to it.

Let me know when, I’ll make a detour to Stone or Mack.

Off to the tourney in a few minutes. I’ll see if the local PD failed to clear any bodies from the streets last night. I’m not wearing my 5.11 shorts today, but I’ve got my tactical Pelican cooler so I’m sure nobody will mess with me. I scream ex-special forces bad assery.

If youre so worried just dont go.
Why put your 12 year old daughter in dangerous situations if it's such a sketchy place? To win a trophy? Doesnt seem worth it.

OR
Realize it aint that bad and youre going to be fine and just enjoy the place for what it is

Agree,

If I was as concerned of the location as at OP posted, my family will not go. Our safety is number 1 priority in our lives. I take it very seriously to the point that my child has friends that can come over, but she can not go over to their home. I have had the conversation with the child's parents too when the topic came up and my child "lost" a friend. Oh well.

I think 98% of this kind of "situational" reality is in our own heads and blown out of control in many aspects. The other 2% is out of our control. Skill is what one needs for mitigation of 2% to remove the fear of the unknown. But again, if the unknown is too much, do not go.

It's hard to describe to folks Just how bad it is there. Stay outta Murder Beach. Your boundaries should be....stay North of Bass Pro and South of the Harley dealership. Thank goodness you are there with them. I'm going to be outta pocket between 10 and about 6 PM. Come by or call if you need us.
Do Not go out after dark. Tell all you know to Stay Away on Memorial Week End. There are No safe places.
Always carry 2.

I'll be down there next week at a Crossfit competition that the wife is involved with. It's inside a stadium so I'm not sure about the security situation but we won't be staying south of the Cherry grove inlet so I'll be relatively safe (and armed) at all other times. Wish I could visit @BatteryOaksBilly but I'm pretty sure she and her cohorts will keep me busy fetching water and getting sunburned whilst screaming rah rah.

Day time activities only. Like any shit hole you can usually work around the problems with some thought and planning.

You're going to ride and enjoy the bug free air?? Thank God for windshields, mine looks like a bug mass casualty incident.

My God!! If Myrtle is THAT bad why does anyone go there?? Can't go north of here or south of here and be in with doors locked before dark. Sounds like my Grandmothers rules when I was a kid in AR.

If it's that sketchy why would I want to go there and see what??

No, I’m fat. I’m talking morbidly obese. They are an obstacle when trying exit a building in hurry.
They probably live in mobile homes too

And taking lots of pictures to share, right?

It is the 33rd most dangerous city in the country(according to USA Today). I will listen to Geezer and BatteryOaksBilly when it comes to their opinion. I have never met Billy, but I trust Larry, and he trusts Billy, so good enough for me.

I stay the hell away from Myrtle Beach. I hear Conway is nice except for a few old coots that shoot guns..lol

The hoodlums took over central Myrtle Beach. It’s steadily declined for 20 years. India culture hotel owners have bought many of the properties and do not keep them up. It’s a shame because my youth was full of fun vacations with family. I moved all my vacations much further south into Florida.

Bingo. My family owned and still owns multiple properties south of Myrtle...and I don't even bother going down and staying for free. Lots of meth and heroin users, plain ol thugs and drunk drivers at all hours of every day. Why anyone would pay $2500-4000 a week to rent one of those double decker trailers on stilts 3 blocks off the beach and subject their family to Myrtle Beach madness I will never understand

Myrtle Beach is actually a small place. Many tourists think everything from Little River to Murrells Inlet is Myrtle Beach. Most people have no idea what goes on in MB, so they come to enjoy the ocean and the beach. The local media does a good job of keeping everything covered up. Social media is starting to spread the word but most people are clueless.

Billy is correct, North Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove, Little River to the north is usually pretty calm. To the south, Surfside Beach, Garden City, Murrells Inlet are pretty low key. Myrtle Beach has one of the largest homeless populations on the east coast. The new boardwalk was a gift to beggars and panhandlers. Thousands of people to ask for money walk by every day.

The parking lot at Broadway at the Beach routinely has assaults, robberies, abductions of people leaving the bars and going to their car.

Whenever someone asks me where to stay at the beach, I give them the same advice that Billy just gave. I tell them to be very aware of their surroundings at all times, especially after dark, and carry at all times.

There's one thing that I've always wondered about and that is what happened to all of those amusement park machines from the old pavilion.

I'd pay good money to have one of those baseball pinball machines, a skee ball machine from there, the old mechanical arm wrestling machine, etc......

Just to have in my house for nostalgic reasons more than anything else. It's kind of like an American Pickers thing I reckon.
