Murder Beach!

Ok, home safe and sound. Here is the after action report:

The Good...

My mighty mite and her partner earned a bid for the National Tournament later this Summer with their performance. They are both 12 and played against 14 year olds.

The Bad...

They actually came in 2nd place out of 20 teams! Oh the horror. But pretty impressive considering the age gap and the fact that they had never played together before and her partner was on crutches Monday with a badly sprained ankle. They will get better. And damn my kid is a shrimp. But a fast, sneaky, feisty one. She’s heartless out there.

The ugly...

Man, that place wasn’t bad before noon, but continually got more crowded with as my daughter said, ‘sketchy’ looking people of all persuasions. Looks like an equal opportunity place for wayward souls. By 4:30 when we left there were groups of drunks, thugs and simply sad looking lost people wandering amongst the living. I’d say our local experts have a very good feel for their domain. Early in the day I felt relaxed. As things went on my head swivel got much more active. I don’t want to be there after dark that’s for sure.

Off to Spartanburg next week for an indoor tourney. Should be a little better. :D

I see what I mean...……… Great showing!!! Get home safe!!! Sorry you couldn't make it by.

This thread reminds me of how I felt at the Wal-Mart in Albemarle a couple of hours ago.

Glock on a swivel.

Where do you think those Albe-hole people go to live their salt life? Haha Stanco has the highest OD rates in the state so it's a problem that is constantly fixing itself

Prom night for the eldest. Threatened the boyfriend at 9:30 am and had to make it back to make sure all ends well. He’s a good kid, but also an 18 year old full of hormones and normal thoughts. Luckily my daughter is an overly mature 18 year old that is very cautious so things should be trouble free tonight. Key word is should.

I despise tourist traps & really don't like the beach anyway, so MB is already off my radar. Rode down for a day for Bike Week '96 & knew then there was no reason for me to return. Shame, 'cos the roadside barbecue on the backroads I took was absolutely incredible.

Yeah I’ve worked EMS in Myrtle and the surrounding areas, still do occasionally. A lot happens over there that you will never hear about. The Boulevard is a cesspool after dark, and sometimes before dark. Luckily I live south of there in the Inlet, but it is getting crowded down there too, not like it was 30yrs ago. After we get back from vacation in July we are looking for a house and some acres on the Conway outskirts to set up our compound.

I haven't been to MB in 25 years so I had no idea it had gotten like that. When I went down it was with 20 other guys and all we did was play golf, drink, eat, sleep, play golf, drink, you get the idea. I guess the restaurants and golf courses we went to didn't attract the element you guys are describing.
I have heard about the horrors of Black Bike Week and know enough to avoid that fiasco but other than that I was clueless....

90% of the time when we go on vacation it is at Myrtle Beach. My older sisters family and mine vacation together. We have young kids and there is more to do there for kids (at least for us) than it is at the North Carolina beaches. We have had 0 problems and we usually stay near the Family Kingdom amusement park. This year we will be staying a little more north of the sky wheel. I don't doubt what some of you all are saying but we have had 0 problems. Of course with young kids we do activities during the day and are usually inside by dark watching a movie. Head on a swivel during the day but that is anywhere. We also typically arrive on a Sunday afternoon and leave on a Thursday so we miss the weekend rush also.

Once upon a time it was a great family destination. I had not been in probably 30 years until two years ago when I went for a day trip when we are at Holden Beach. My experience mirrored @CZfool68 . When we got there in the morning it was really nice, but the later the day went, the worst the element became.

It's kitchy now, not as cute, and I'm not sure what it's trying to be, that fun family destination like it used to be, or a destination for upscale high end resorts. Gone are those two-story hotels with balconies right on the beach, they have that beautiful boardwalk now, and a ton of new construction, but no real family hotels.

That would be the best way to visit MB.

Mark, I am glad to hear the tournament went well. I am even more glad you had no issues. Congrats on the National bid.

I swore the place off 5 years ago. We stayed in Myrtle at a hotel near the River City Cafe’ (The Sand’s Ocean Club iirc). We had a good time except for the last day. Things got dicey across the street when the sun went down.

BTW, when I was going over the final game with my wife I think I accidentally picked a scab.

Finals were in a best of three format. 21 points wins a set. If a 3rd set in needed they play to 15. Score were as follows:

23-25, 21-17, 13-15.

My daughter hears that and does the quick math.

‘Hey, we scored the same amount of points they did! We could have beat them easily.’

Then I tell her that they could have won in 2 sets or lost in 2 sets. Although they did have game point twice in that first set and let it slip away. But she seems happy with how she played so it’s all good.

And the best thing is that I did manage to screw up the GoPro video. Somehow I hit the picture burst setting instead of video. So now we have 1000’s of pics and no video. Guess that is what my wife gets for not letting me ever use the GoPro before. Bet she’ll make sure she is at the next tourney. :D

Not Murder Beach, but the mighty mite and her friends conquered Spartanburg this weekend. 1st place and a free qualification for the AAU’s in Florida next month. They went 6-0 and did not lose a set. Not bad with their best hitter out for the year with a hurt knee.

The condo we take care of is in Windy Hill/North Myrtle, and is about as safe as you can get as far as Myrtle goes I believe. We we're there six or seven times last year, and no riff raff to speak of. We do stay away from Broadway at the beach, as I have personally known some friends who have had some trouble with people looking for trouble. When we are there at the condo, I always feel safe and have never worried about much while down there. Have fun, keep that head on a swivel, and not just to look at tail, lol.
We are staying in this exact area over Memorial Day weekend into the following week. I have a 4 and 6 year old. Any recommendations for must visit/do? Feel free to PM me.

Also, we are looking for a consistent place to rent for weekend trips. PM me the details on the rental! :)

Yeah, stay away from the area between Hwy 9 and 544. You have literally picked the worst weekend to visit Horry county SC.

I seriously hope you are kidding about this.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys!! My wife booked it....I am doing damage control and trying to make best of it!
Man, there is no making the best of it this weekend. It is THAT BAD. I would stay home and watch paint dry before going memorial day weekend.

That's pretty much me and going anywhere on Memorial Day weekend. A beach? Fuhgetaboutit.
I would go to any NC beach, most other FL beaches besides Daytona, and possibly some others. But unless you like anarchy, lawlessness, assaults, traffic and gratuitous display of cellulite infused sized 16 derrieres on sportbikes clogging every piece of asphalt....I would avoid it like an STD

Use to go to Myrtle Beach when I was a kid. (1960's) We camped at Sherwood Forest campground (9mi N. of M.B.). It was a nice place. Gone now. You could camp near the beach or under the trees. Shame to hear that MB has gone down hill.

The pic is an old post card.

I thought Myrtle Beach was great as a kid and the place to go as a teenager but then it really went to big and commercial. I haven’t been to MB in over 15 years ... traffic and crowding mainly but the crime also. My 17 year old son wants to go with a group there after school is out is summer ... his girlfriend has a relative with a cottage or condo that she has use of. I remember going down the summer after my junior year and for graduation the next and running what I thought was wild (drinking age was 18 then) but that was a different time and MB was different place. I really am not sure if I’ll let him go with the way the world as turned and how the law enforcement crackdown shifted 15 - 20 years ago.

even coming in early Sunday morning and staying right on the beach near Windy Hill? Plan on staying Sun-Wed the 29th.
Sorry, but that will still be right in the thick of it. Monday is when everyone starts heading out of town. On Monday you can mistake the streets for the county dump. There is that much trash.

Windy Hill is right next door to Atlantic Beach, Atlantic Beach is ground zero for this weekend. Go to You Tube and search Memorial Day Myrtle Beach. I feel really bad for you because you said you had two small children. They will see things that they shouldn't see.

I know that we are painting a picture of gloom and doom and I wish we were wrong. If you must come, please watch out for your family and watch your back at all times.

@gaberelli in my brief time there I noticed one key thing. At 6 am all was quiet. By Noon the world was changing. And it got worse as the day went on. If you end up there maybe hit the beach with the kids very early and GTFO. Find an inland activity or watch Netflix. My 12 year old is probably not normal, but she is very observant and loves mysteries, cop shows and Live PD. After her tournament as we were walking to the car I asked if she wanted dinner close by or on the way home. She looked at me like I was an idiot and said, not near here Dad, whatever we find on the way is fine.

agree with CrazyCarl: "Shame, 'cos the roadside barbecue on the backroads I took was absolutely incredible."
ever' las' one o' 'em. all good. all the way there and back. back to the topic:
last year was our last year. we have too many little ones and MB had too
many big, bad ones. Holden Beach for us.

My 6 year old is equally observant. Head always on a swivel. Nothing misses her eye... Not a good place for a little mind like that.
