My daughter loves my FNX45. Would she like a full metal 1911 in 45ACP?

Or 9mm?
Thinking ahead to my daughter's first carry pistol. She loves my FNX45. But it is a bit large for carry.
A 1911 is a bit slimmer, but has the weight she likes. I'll have here try a couple at the range to see how she likes it.

She is a very accurate shooter too. Can't count the 30 holes on her first CC qual target when she was 19. Had her do it to try. She made some very big holes in the target. :D

Whatever you do make her be fully involved in the decision. After all it's her weapon. Fortunately, we're living in the golden age of semiauto pistols. it's actually quite hard to pick a rotten one.

In keeping with the .45 cal and or a 1911 I think the Commander sized Rugers are great, be it the std all stainless, or the lightweight, also Ruger makes the lightweight Commander in 9mm.

Aside from the 1911, I personally like the M&P 45C, there's the new Ruger American Pistol .45Compact, the HK 45C. More choices than we can shake a stick at. 9mm? There again, too many choices...

Let her pick the one she is comforted by and is comfortable and confident in manipulating and shooting, but having said that, it's a father's responsibility to ensure she is well informed, so she can make the well informed decision that may one day positively impact her safety when she needs it most...

That is the plan. I'll still let her take my FNX45. But I'll also but her whatever carry pistol she wants. Figured 1911 style might be good for her to try shooting given how she likes the heft of the FNX45.
She might like some CZ heavy metal too.

A 9mm commander sized 1911, who would say no to that?

My wife likes and can operate the heck out of a 1911 and while she can handle a 45, she prefers a 9mm. She likes my sig 938 better than her sig 238 actually.

You know I have the FNX as well, and I also love a good 1911. So if she shoots the FNX as well as she does, the 1911 is about the same recoil and handling wise. It would all come down to her preference. Main issue I have run into with women and carrying is that their clothes are generally not as "carry friendly" as mens, which is why most women I know tend to lean towards smaller options.

My daughter is not a tight clothes person. She prefers comfort. So something with a 4 inch barrel will still conceal well with her. People will see her dragon tattoo on her arm and never notice anything printing. :D

If she has a dragon tat, then it is required that she carries a 1911. I saw it written somewhere. Nickel plated with custom dragon grip panels. If you don't do this then you are a horrible father and should feel shame.

Again ... I do not pick firearms for my wife. I buy or trade for something I like and if I think she might like it I’ll let her try it. If she does like it she takes it ... if not I’ll keep it around and see how I like it or have more trade bait.

Now as to a 1911 ... do you really want to open up that can of worms with her? They are like Lays Potato Chips no one can own just one so you’ll wind up getting the 9mm later if you go .45acp or vice versa ... but she will love either which ever one comes first and maybe Daddy can shot the other when she’s shooting one :D.

Gutzy, I'd also have her try a Commander size 1911. For me they balance better and shoot just as well as the Gov't size. At least with my skills. If I could get out your way some weekend I've got a few she could try.

In 45, even with baggy clothes, maybe a Combat Commander? The 1911 is slim, but the grip and slide are long, so cut a little off each, hides better, jabs and bangs on stuff less.

That weight kinda sucks to have hanging around all the time, just something to consider.

Too bad the old Star PD isn't still made. It'd be the ticket.

As for an actual answer, go somewhere with a great selection and (her) try them out for weight/size/grip fit/natural pointing/trigger/sight picture and to get an idea of what could conceal.
My preferences, in order of size - Sig 938, Springfield EMP9, (I don't have a commander size 9, but that would be here), 9mm 1911, 9mm 2011. I think that last would be bigger than the FNX so that's a pretty full range. I have a 45 (just one) but never carry it.

Out of all my guns, my wife likes the Remington R1 Enhanced .45ACP government size the most and shoots it the best.

She however has zero desire to attempt to conceal one, though. I have an Officers size 1911, but she hasn't expressed much interest in it.

As we have found out, it pretty much comes down to how much gun are you willing to dress around. Best bet would be to take her somewhere with a wide variety and let her look around at as many options as possible.
