A funny thing happened at Battery Oaks this weekend.

We had been talking handguns, ammo, the usual things. Sunday, I unloaded my pistol as usual -- dropped the mag and racked the slide to remove the loaded round. When it didn't eject, I looked and discovered that the day before, when reloading after measuring my trigger pull, I had not chambered a round. I had been carrying a dry brick since the day before. I have never done that before, to my memory. (Sharp-eyed @Millie noticed and said, "You weren't ready, were you?" Good eye, sis!)

To compound the fracture, when I got home Sunday and unpacked, I discovered that I had left all the spare pistol mags and the mags for the truck gun in the ammo lockbox at home. (I have kids in the house and guns and ammo are always locked up in separate places when they are not under my direct control.

So for my Battery Oaks weekend, I had no spare pistol mags and no mags for my truck gun.

My, am I mortified.

This post is presented for educational purposes. Check, then double-check. The life you save may be your own.

+1 for the home lock boxes. Good to press check before leaving the home.

Brother, you aint alone...

I carry a little model 442 5 shot S&W most days when I need to "deeper conceal". A week ago I took it out to give it a wipe down as I noticed a good bit of lint developing. Went to load it back up, and the cylinder wouldnt close. I fiddled around a bit, then checked each round, and come to see that somehow I managed to get a .357 round in there. I have absolutely no idea how I manged to get it to lock shut in the past.

My grandpa used to keep a little 25 beretta in his desk by the front door where he sat. When i was younger he showed it to me and explained why he liked it. "The cool thing about this gun is you can load a mag and then you can tip up the barrel to put one in the chamber so you dont have to rack it." As he said that he popped open the barrel and there was nothing in the chamber...I asked him how long he thought there was one in there and he was looking at the floor, shaking his head when he said months. It can happen to any of us. Thanks for the reminder to check, check, and check again.

Share a true story from an experienced veteran, he was working undercover drug enforcement, he carried a 9mm semiauto and a .357 revolver.
Things went south real fast, he pulls the .357 and talks his way out of the situation, goes home alive. When he gets home, he noticed the 9mm
had the safety on, had he went for the gun he would have been in a bad situation. He decided to give up that job and move on to better things.

What's your EDC handgun these days?
My first day carrying the Beretta 92s, so I have a gun digging into my leg again....I'm used to it. I'm liking it so far. The gun, not the leg-digging aspect!

We'll see how it does at the range this week, going to blow thru some rounds, but it has to be done.

Let's give her a while because we declare that the EDC. There's a certain amount of "history" there. ;)
The one I carried the longest, about 10 months, was the G19....what does that tell us??
I carried the p238 for about 6 months, as my first carry gun.
Yes, I change my mind a lot....I think this is going to be a good one for me to shoot, but that's only based on less than 100 rounds yesterday.

Lotsa people who carry everyday has had this happen to them, with the empty chamber. It'll scare you so bad that it'll never happen again !
I make our folks reload before they leave the range and go back to work.

On the above theme, I once drove an hour to work with an empty holster. Noticed it right before roll call. Hung my hat on the holster and went home "sick" right afterwards. I sure felt sick. Another "one-time event" !

As far as guys leaving their guns in the crapper ? Happens all the time.

As I age I find I need a "life caddy" for everyday use. I need someone to tell me where I put stuff, and to pick up the things I drop.

A couple weeks ago I had a friend talked into running me through some drills in preparation for a big match that's coming up. We talked pretty extensively about the range, the weather, which gun I should use, and which drills to run. I packed up the morning of, large range bag with ammo, UpLULA loader, mags for 3 different guns, glasses, two sets of muffs, pasters, timer, extra batteries, lens wipes, Allen wrench set, and I'm sure I'm missing some stuff that's in that bag. Put the bag in one chair and 3 different pistols in their cases in another chair. Drove 30 minutes to the range, and you guessed it, all three pistols still on the chair.

Damn... and here I was ashamed to admit I forgot to top off my mag for the +1 after loading up.

Ill never understand the bathroom problem. Gun stays in the holster while I do my business... why on earth would you take it out?

ETA: I get why you might be tempted but I don't get why you'd actually do it instead of solving the problem another way.

Guns fall out of some holsters.

This reminds me of a story...

I was 21yo and had just finished boot camp. I was back home on leave for one week before reporting to my first unit in Miami, FL.

One night, on leave, I was drinking beer with an old high school friend, at his house. His dad was a local cop, but he was on duty that night.

My buddy and I were talking about boot camp, guns, etc, when his little brother (about 15yo) ran into the living room holding their dad's nightstand gun, yelling, "You wanna see my dad's gun?"

I carefully took it from him, cleared it, made it safe, and said, "Where did you get this from? We need to put it back."

I followed him into his parents' empty bedroom. I inserted the mag and put it back in the nightstand drawer. I told the boy not to take it out again.

Shortly after, I went home for the night and forgot all about that man's unloaded gun in the nightstand.

To this day, I still wonder how long it took him to realize his gun didn't have a round in the chamber. I hope he never found himself in a position to need it, pull the trigger, and only hear "click"...

Just another reason to regularly check the condition of your firearms...

And here is where my (only) gun brilliance comes in! Wait for it.......

Wear the belt around your waist....forget the pants loops.

You never have to worry about that gun on your waistband flopping around or falling to the ground when your pants are down.

Pants up, pants down, no flopping around, no guns on the ground. Gun is on belt around waist, no problems at all!:)

You literally replied to a comment by "gunbelt" to talk about "guns" and "belts"...

That's mildly interesting...

Why, yes....yes I did.
You must be really, really bored to find a comment of mine even mildly interesting, dude! I hope your day improves! A lot.:)

Well, Millie...you have hit another nail on the head, and a topic that could be its own. If you allow your pants to fall you become unfettered by the restrictive nature of the clothing. For centuries warriors charged into battle virtually naked. Not only was this horribly disheartening to ones opponents as bracing for a charge whist faced with naked, hairy, screaming men covered in tattoos, blood, and dirt can be, it also allowed less material for an opponent to seize during desperate close quarters melee.

So, if you are faced with having to use your firearm to defend your life. By all means, strip all of your clothes off, charge into battle butt nekkid.

NObody wants to see that!!

Any potential battle I might be engaged in would be over before I even had a chance to draw the gun.....men would run away screaming, seeking eye bleach.....and so I win! :)

I'd look... Every woman is beautiful, in their own way! And, I love all boobies (no matter how far they are from touching the ground)... ;)

My main concern about this is ,if @Battery Oaks Billy reads about this Naked Gun fighting, what will happen down there . This is especially after reading about the firing from the ground position as in Kenosha Wisconsin this past weekend.

Maybe he can come up with a new training exercise called "Wizard Sleeve"!

It was probably about when my education was coming to an end, 7-8th grade, my Daddy told me son upside down in a barrel they all look the same. My Father the Philosopher.

My dad was a traveling construction worker. He stayed on the road about 6 months out of every year.

He used to say, "Any port will do in a storm."

It wasn't until I joined the military and started traveling the world that I figured out what he was taking about...

Because when you take off the duty belt and maybe your body armor, you remove the pistol from the holster to get redressed. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I just can't sling a gunbelt around me with a pistol in the holster, it feels unsafe. I take the weapon out and reholster once the belt is secured and keepers on.
Additionally, even though I'm plainclothes now, I've been around during two shootings in a precinct house. I'm vulnerable enough already, no way I'm leaving a pistol hanging on the hook out of arms reach on the job.
Kinda a habit, like being sure my new fatboy belt is broken in and can be unfastened in an emergency !
