I was home for lunch. I let the dogs out of their kennel so they could run around, relieve themselves, etc. After about a half hour, one of them starts barking, then finally raising hell. I look out the door and see movement on the other side of the fence, the neighbor's backyard. I have Leyland cypress trees lining my backyard, so I can only see legs over there. Because the dogs are now barking like mad, I decide to put them back in the kennel. I have to return to work soon, anyways.

I go back inside and have just enough time to research August Ames'es career. A few minutes later, I hear a loud pop. Did a transformer just explode? I glanced out of the kitchen window. The chickens seemed freaked out a bit. The dogs were looking towards my neighbor's house. Hmm. Curious. About a minute later, another pop. Nope. No doubt about it. Gun shots.

Who is shooting? What are they shooting at? Did someone just die? What's going on?

I lock up and leave for work. As I'm going by my neighbor's house, he's in the front yard, raking leaves. I pull into his driveway and alongside him. I ask if he's okay. He says yes, then asks if I'm talking about the shots fired. I said yes.

Turns out, the dogs were barking at him. He says the brown one scared the crap out of him. He just knew he was coming through the fence. He said he felt like he couldn't even walk through his yard any more, so his fix was to shoot his gun in the air to scare the dogs. The problem is he let at least five minutes elapse between the dogs barking and him firing shots in the air. Also, there was at least a minute between shots. I told him the dogs were in their kennel when he came back out. His response was he just wanted to let them know he was there.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do next. Introduce him to the dogs so they can bond? Say F him and let the dogs bark? Put up a barrier so the dogs can't see him?

If you can get your dogs to acknowledge him it’ll make your life easier too. If you want them to associate with that sort of person...

First, he needs his ass kicked for shooting in the air lol.

I’d let him meet them. See if they change their minds. But remember, dogs know things. Though some folks are scared of dogs. My Buddy Todd who is a die hard outdoorsman is terrified of them. He won’t get out of his truck at my house if there’s a dog outside.

I find the behavior of both him and the dogs strange.

He's been my neighbor for 10 years or more and the only thing about him that annoys me is how he lets his late 70s Chevy pickup idle for 20 minutes before he drives off. Otherwise, it's been an amicable relationship.

As far as the dogs (mostly the brown one), they (he) have not shown this much aggression towards people on the other side of the fence. Sure, they will bark, but it's usually a yip or two and they lose interest. Now, it's like they are very much interested in protecting their territory. I did catch the other neighbor's kid teasing them, getting them worked up. I gave him a lecture and no problems from him since. Think that has anything to do with the increased aggression?

Both dogs (one male, one female) are fixed. I don't think I can blame testosterone.

@BurnedOutGeek has been to my house a couple of times. We ain't exactly in the country, so popping off a couple rounds here would definitely seem out of the ordinary.

I want to get them together soon and may even buy a box of treats to give to the neighbor so he can approach the fence and offer them up.

Treats are a great idea. Or a toy that they like to play with. My dad used to have a 160lb Rottweiler. Everyone that came here was scared to death of him because he was big and loud. Throw the ball for him to chase one time and he was yours forver

I think I'll go with treats. The white dog is the ball chaser. The brown one is the eater. The brown one is the one he's afraid of because he shows the most aggression..

The treat idea sounds like the best idea to me.

And he's still a motard for shooting in the air especially so long after the "incident"

I've a spare, or two armpit gel T.
I found a natural supplement pack that actually works better than anything else, including the damned injected pellets.

I did the gel which was ok and the patches are a little better. I've got to try the patches for another month but with the gel there was little improvement in my numbers.

Better in the air then through the bushes.

I'm going to check the fence line for divots. If he was so scared that he still took two shots five minutes after the moment had passed, I'm not so sure he wouldn't have fired through the trees.

WTH is he scared of if they are in a fenced yard? I bet he craps his pants at the lion exhibit at the zoo!

He claims my fence isn't sturdy enough and the dog is big enough that he could get through it by pushing the bottom and going under it. I've held this same fence up so my stupid chickens could walk back under it. I thought the fence was pretty stout. I don't see this dog pushing under it. I won't say he can't, just that I don't see him doing it.

I say eff him, but check your fence all the same.
I've got 4' welded wire all the way around our property. I don't encourage my mutts to bark at the neighbors, but I don't discourage them either because my neighbors are some sketchy mfers. Once found one of them leaning on my fence, in a corner far from the house. I happened to be cutting the grass, so I locked the dogs up and headed out the gate to mow in front of the house. He immediately moved back down towards his house even though I wasn't cutting on that side of the drive.
Many other incidents, too many to list right now, up to and including bumping my wife's car from behind determined I wouldn't discourage my mutts from tearing up someone from that property- but I won't encourage it either.
Eff 'em, good fences make good neighbors and all that.

I would like to think introducing the dogs to him would help. But I just moved out of Cary, and my next door neighbor had two Labs that would bark at me every time I went in the back yard. I'd walk up to the four-foot tall privacy fence, and the loudest one would lick my hand and try to get up to lick my face. If I backed away, she'd start barking again. And I had also been in their house and played with them.

At least if he got to pet them he could see they're not really vicious.

It's really simple. I'd tell him if he's that scared, then he should build a fence to his specs on his side of the line. Otherwise, eff him. Call the smog police on him when he's idling for 20 minutes.

Sounds just like my dogs. I’ve got a 6’ privacy fence running along the back of my property and my dogs bark and growl any time my neighbor is in his yard on the other side of the fence. When I let the dogs out of the fence they run over and play with him, they’ve even hung out with him when they’ve dug out of the fence and I wasn’t home. Just something about them not being able to see him drives them crazy.

He might call animal control. A person I know had barking dogs, neighbors called, any the dog owners got a 600$ fine.

I'd probably hit him back with a call to local law enforcement about discharge of firearms within 800ft of a residence, which is probably what the ordinance in his county is ;)

I promise that when you mention he shot his gun in the air they'll be happy to pay a visit.

What do you think duck and dove hunters do?

Train the dogs. When they start barking, go outside with them. Their bark is letting you know something is going on. Let them know when he is in the yard its ok. No need to bark. Enlist his help in training them. Of course teach them only about him in his back yard. Not about all barking.

Get him some panty shields; guy sounds like a puss.

Is he a po po?
If he is arm your dogs.

Was outside cleaning out chicken coops and picking up the dogs' yard art and found this. Now, I know what type of gun he used.
