This was some of my finds this past Saturday - an old horseshoe, plow point, pieces from a broken pewter plate. I also found the spot where, apparently, old farm machinery was worked on. I got tired of digging old broken parts, though the old truck tire air gauge was some unusual. But our group did find a couple of really old padlocks, 1800's hinges, and similar artifacts. My only coin was a 1990's quarter. Still, it was good to get out.
(I didn't find the lid with the monogram, but it apparently was from Pond's cold cream. The monogram PE Co is "Pond's Extract Company")

Anyone tried electrolysis?

I'm thinking of attempting it on a couple pieces.

Yes. It works quite well. Just remember to connect the leads properly and don't let the alligator clips come in contact with the solution. Hook them to a wire and connect. The process will destroy the clips eventually.

I found a photo on that sight from 1948 of my property in Alleghany county which showed the old house and the old road before they straightened it.

Yeah, thanks for that mj1. I can see what appeares to be an old homesite, or maybe a barn in the 48 arial that I had no idea about. I'll be investigating soon.

Went back over to the barn? site and got a better look at what I thought was floor. I am not sure if it was a floor, wall, dungeon..

The chunks have one flat side and sometimes flat edges with reinforcement in it. Here is a photo of a chunk with 2 flat edges and flat face that was facing down.

I don't know if the strapping is homemade or not

Anyone hunting old home places be careful of partially covered wells. I about stepped in one years ago.

I worked at a beachfront campground in another life. We took turns in the summer running a beach sweeper that sifted through all the sand and collected anything bigger than a nickel in a hopper. I always wonder how many rings, watches, and wallets got thrown away. I would occasionally sift a bit and came up with a series of (3) $20 bills once, but that was it. A metal detector would have been sweet.

Seeing the sunrise every morning was awesome. Fun times.

Going back to the OBX this year for vacation in June. Didn't have a beach scoop so I bought a little cheap plastic shovel from Walmart. Wanted to be prepared this year so I ordered a CooB Krepish v2 off of Amazon yesterday. Will have to get a long handle for it. Hopefully I'll find more than little metal tent stakes and bottle caps.
