I have a stainless Old Army that doesn't get much use but with all of the ammo shortage talk I decided to dig it out and start shooting it again.

I use Pyrodex pellets for ease of range reloads but I was down to only about 50 so I placed an order on line through Bass Pro and had them delivered in less than a week to the Cabelas in Garner. No Hazmat fee for a delivery to a Cabelas. Now I have caps, pellets, and projectiles and am ready to make some smoke.

I do detest the cleaning afterwards though.

I like your solution! Get one of the conversion cylinders and you'll be .45 Colt enabled as well! I also have one of the Old Army's; am getting it back into shootin' shape (new nipples, supplies, etc.).. One thing I have going for me is that I have plenty of BP. All the best, and enjoy!!

Thanks Ben! I'm covered on the .45 Colt side with two SAA clones and a 1919 Colt New Service. My problem previously with the Old Army and Pyrodex was that the CCI caps that I could find back in the day weren't enough to reliably ignite the pellets. I switched to Winchester brand caps and have much better luck. I also bought a tin of Remington #11s at Cabelas to see how they do.

I've heard that the pellets are harder to ignite. Glad you found something that will work with them! I have some Pyrodex, some Triple 7 and "real deal" black powder, all of it in granulated form and never had any problem igniting those. I will be shopping for caps soon. The #11's work for you, eh?

Yep, #10s are too small for my Old Army.

By the way, I have one S&W, 3 Rugers and a Marlin in .45 Colt, and still haven't ruled out the conversion cylinder for the Old Army. One can't have too many .45... can they?

Not at all! The .45 Colt is an excellent cartridge.

Nice solution to the shortage. Not many shoot ‘old school.’ Should be plenty of components for awhile.

For those that haven't noticed.... Pyrodex pellets have a little black powder on one end to help ignition, 777 pellets do not.

I still think that your solution to the ammo shortage is better than mine. My shoulder is sore from throwing rocks.

I had no idea! Can it be determined by looking at the pellet which end has the BP?

Never noticed it. Next time I shoot the Old Army I'll check this out. Maybe that's the reason I get some slow ignition on random chambers.
