So after some deep thinking, I decided to take the Ancestry DNA test. I know, the government has my DNA now, but they had it anyway as I did a smoking cessation thing with Duke University where they paid me to quit and one of the requirements was a DNA sample. Surely they ran right to the feds and gave that up. But anyway,
long story short.

The reason I did it was that I was adopted right after birth. I've always known I was adopted. Never really thought much about it. I put my name on a list in South Carolina about a decade ago and nothing came of it. So I just said what the hell and paid for the Ancestry DNA test.

Got the results back yesterday at 6PM. At 9PM I was on the phone talking to my half sister and I found my birth mother who is alive and well living near Columbia. I have another sibling probably on my fathers side though their info is hidden on the website. My new sister has agreed not to tell my birth mother yet cause I'm not there yet and anyway, a meeting like this needs to be kind of epic.

Also not telling my mom because my father died a few months ago and she might feel like I've abandoned her.

So anyway, wow. cray cray weekend (I'm 1% central, west African).

My situation is very similar. I did 23andme and Ancestry some time ago and for years got nothing but relatives so distant that there was nothing to pursue. But a second cousin with a bulldog streak and an interest in genealogy has -apparently- tracked down my (deceased) birth mother by doing some brute force research. She's still at it, looking for our common relatives, and may be on the track of a half-sibling. (Turns out that I'm an NC hillbilly, but I've known that instinctively all my life.)

Mine says western North Carolina ancestors as well. Have already been contacted by an 8th cousin in Nigeria. Could be royalty.

Anything less than 10% should be identified as a possibly erroneous record and I wouldn't place faith in that **cough cough** Elizabeth Warren **cough**

Congrats though.

Well if reparation go down and everyone of color starts getting 40 acres and a mule, I, by God want my 0.4 acres and a hen.

I am sooooo glad your bio mom is still alive. I had the forms filled out to get my records opened by a judge in Va. and I carried them around for years, mulling over the ramifications of doing this...for all involved.
I sat on that form for so long that by the time they opened the file, my bio mom had been dead a couple of years and my bio dad had died a month before I got the call that my sister would talk to me. I'm happy for you, and hope all goes well!

For me it turned out I was living within a few miles of my dad's side most of my adult life and never knew. My mom's side was about an hour away all the time. I have 2 sisters and 4 brothers, and lots of nieces and nephews.

Don't procrastinate, people, do it and find out before it's too late!!

Damn! How many adoptees do we have here?

Me too. I was taken to meet some of the real family when I was 12. I was the last of 8 kids and one too many so screw those guys. Pretty sure the donors are dead now.

18 straight in the Methodist Children's Home in Little Rock, Arkansas. Some weekends with my Grandparents.

Don't know who the parents are/were and don't care to find out. Grandmother tried to tell me a couple of times and I always told her I didn't care to know. And sure as hell don't care to know now.....

That is pretty cool.
My family tree on my father's side ends with him. He was adopted.
It was believed that his father was his mom's boss. But she better revealed.
(That set him for some pretty messed up ideas about what a perfect family is)
We had contact with his adoptive family for a time but not since elementary school.
