- 30 drops of lemon-eucalyptus essential oil blend

- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- 4 ounces witch hazel, rubbing alcohol, or vodka

Mix the witch hazel, essential oil and vanilla extract into a small spray bottle.

This formulation will only last for about four hours, so don't forget to re-apply it as needed.

Sounds just like some stuff I picked up last time we were down to Kiawah Island. It's an all natural mosquito repellant. They call it (marketing dept. really researched this) "No Mosquitoz". They have another blend called "No Gnatz". The gnats down there will eat you alive. If the breeze isn't blowing they are all over you and in your face. Miserable little shitz.

For gnats, fill a small cup with apple cider vinegar all the way to the brim....so full that it's about to run over. They're attracted to it and will get stuck due to surface tension

I've done similar for fruit flies. Except I don't fill it to the brim, I just put a little bit in it. Cover the cup tight with plastic wrap, punch a small hole in the wrap with a toothpick. They will go in, but they cant figure out how to get out.

The deet stuff works, but my God for 20 seconds after I put it on I get a buzz. I think it's kin to gasoline.

So living in the Keys all them years, (an extension of the Everglades..) I had to do something. There were no 'natural' repellents available then, so I invented my own.

1 part Citronella oil
10 parts Aloe Vera gel

I would just dump the little bottle of Citronella into the big aloe bottle and shake it up, but you can be more precise if you want.
It works really good. And since I was in the sun all the time the aloe was an extra benefit.
If there's a drawback, you smell like a citronella candle. Didn't bother me, I was raised on a Dairy Farm. Citronella was like flowers compared to that.

Down around Okeechobee and such they say Skin So Soft but I haven't been down there in years.

Tried that too. Skin so soft does work ok. But it only stops about 60-70% of the bites, so you still get hit but it's better than nothing.
It works great with sand fleas though. Go figure.

I should point out that where I lived the mosquito's were professionals. It's the Florida State bird.
They were very aggressive and it took real effort to keep them away.
Where I live now mosquito's are rare. A dab or two of skin so soft would probably work great.

One landed at Homestead ARB and the ground crew almost started pumping in JP8 but realized it wasn't one of ours.

They lick skin so soft off. Regular OFF doesn't even work in the swamps here. At least 40% deet and higher. I use Repel. If your setting still, thermocell, and sometimes more than one.

I just bring my wife, she us a mosquito buffet, I never get attacked. She wears the Off repellent now.

I wonder if it would still work if I just drank the vodka part? :)

I have a miraculous device called a thermocell, it's like magic. And when you learn to refill the butane bottles and buy pads from Ebay, it's a cheap miracle.

That is what happens to me. I have to explain to my wife and others that just because they aren't getting bit doesn't mean that I'm not. I'm the reason they aren't getting bit!
