Recently moved from Oregon to NC. I have a vehicle with NC plates but still have an Oregon drivers license and concealed carry permit. A few days ago I was pulled over and told my license plate was not valid, for no apparent reason. Wasted about an hour going to to the DMV to clear that up, still never got a reason. Everything was clear. No sorry for wasting my time...

Anyway, the cop had a real attitude when I told him I had a concealed firearm. Within minutes there were 3 other officers there. He had to take my gun (Glock), unload it, call in the serial, blah, blah. (Even though the traffic stop was basically over) He then proceeded to tell me that my concealed carry permit was not valid in NC, and acted like he was doing me a favor for not making a big deal about it. (You already made a big deal, officer!)

I just wanted to confirm with others, doesn't NC recognize the concealed carry permits from EVERY other state?

This website, with an official looking address, claims as of 2011, "North Carolina automatically recognizes concealed carry permits issued in any other state".
http://www.ncdoj.gov/getdoc/19be6294-bfbf-4875-bbef-ac2ebb6f47b2/Concealed-Weapon-Reciprocity.aspx

Is this correct information, and was the police officer wrong? Am I free to continue concealing my firearm?

I would think your resident Oregon permit would of been invalid once you mover residence to NC. Now that your a resident of NC you need a Nc permit. I am not a lawyer nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn express last night but I would think thats how it works.

I think him saying the license plate wasnt legal is you have to be a nc resident to have a nc tag on your car. And you aren't officially a resident with an Oregon dl.

As far as the cc I'm guessing he was saying you had been in the state long enough to be a resident

I think you have 30 days to get NCDL after moving to the state.

Still need an NC CHP after "moving" in state.

WOW! Way too many assumptions going on here. I am not a "resident" of NC. I have a home here. I have a home in Oregon. I go back and fourth on a regular basis. I have no legal requirement to have an NC drivers license, and of course, he couldn't tell what type of drivers license I had before he stopped me!

No, you do not have to be a NC resident to have a NC plate on your vehicle. Completely false. My plate is perfectly legal, and the DMV has seen my OR drivers license.

None of the drivers license/license plate stuff is relevant to the concealed carry permit. The officer specifically told me that NC does not have concealed carry reciprocity with the state of Oregon, nor did he ask me how long I had been in the state.

Assumptions were based on the lack of info in the original post.

You have 60 days to get a NC drivers license after establishing a permanent residence in NC. You should get your drivers license prior to registering your vehicle. Not sure how you got NC plates without the NC drivers license. NC recognizes Oregon's CCW, however, is your Oregon license still valid since you moved??? I googled it and found this on USA Carry:
If I move my permanent residence to another state, is my Oregon Concealed Handgun License still valid?
If you are moving to a bordering state, you may be able to keep your license. Contact the sheriff of your county for more information. If you are moving to a non-neighboring state then the license is no longer valid.

Your best bet would be to get a NC driver's license and a NC CHP

I have not "established permanent residence" in NC. I spend some time here. I have a rental house here. That's it. Like I said, I go back and fourth on

I'm out. Trying to help. Didn't mean to NEED your life story. But the way they were ask did make a difference in the way they were answered.
Your first reply didn't even make sense. How would he know I had an Oregon drivers license before he stopped me for supposedly having an invalid plate on the back of my vehicle? Don't be upset because you didn't understand the question.

I did understand. If you read what you wrote. You said you were pulled over and told your plate wasnt valid. You didn't say you were pulled over for having an invalid plate. But at this point I really don't care. Good luck.

USA carry says Oregon does have reciprocity with North Carolina. So it looks like the officer was wrong on that part. I think the confusion started "for me anyway"when in the first post you made you said you MOVED here. There was no mention of owning two homes in two different states. It seems to me if you have moved here the Oregon CHP would be invalid. But if you still have two homes it would still be good. So if you really have moved here and can't prove you own a home in Oregon I wouldn't be carrying.

If you are still a resident of Oregon, and your Oregon Concealed Permit is valid, it should be good in NC
Thank you for being on topic and helpful!

Even then I would have 60 days. I did say "recently", I wouldn't consider 2 months ago recent. Also the officer would have no way to know when I got here, It's not like I have to show a passport to enter NC. There is no official record of me arriving.

I'm sorry I bothered to explain myself at all. I should have just asked what NC reciprocity was. *sigh* I think there's a lot of bored people here on Sunday afternoon...

Try to help someone out and they've got to be an ass. No wonder the LEO had an attitude dealing with the one you have.

It looks like you just want to split hairs now with"recently" etc. And now I think you've gotten the answer and would rather now just insult all of us bored people trying to help out. Not a great way to start off in a forum. I can't imagine what kind of attitude you had with the LEO.

First welcome to CFF.

We are not a bunch of bored people sitting around on a Sunday. We're a pretty damn tight group that tries to help whenever we can. I'm sure if you go back and read your responses that you might see where the animosity originated. By all means fling open the door, throw your feet up on the counter and tell us how we're all wrong when we're simply working with the provided info that you felt was pertinent.

Yes, I was annoyed when 48 people tried to answer questions I didn't ask, and make wrong assumptions. I'm over it, you should be to. My god you people are sensitive!

I'm done with this thread, and probably this forum.

That's fine as well. I do know of 2 other Carolina based forums that would love to have you and you'd probably have a better time at. Good luck!

Wow. This might have been the fastest flame out by a new member in the history of this forum.

I'm disappointed that you guys didn't answer his question exactly as he wanted y'all to. LMAO.

@LeeMajors how's the leg man? Still gimping around or did they finally cut it off?
