I'm in Mecklenburg county completing the online application for a pistol purchase permit.

Why do they ask for a reason as to why you're requesting a pistol purchase permit? Does the way you answer have any impact on your application?

I don't even have the option of leaving this unconstitutional bs question blank.

I put down collecting on mine.

Okay update, I checked the top 3 boxes. Now I have to go to the Sherrif's office and sign-off on a court order release of mental health records within 5 business days, and apparently wait a total of 14 days or less to get the permits.

All this when I already own a handgun back when I was in Maryland. I already have a MD HQL but there are no exemptions. This is such a racket, you can buy a long rifle which is more powerful, but need permission from your Sheriff to purchase a pistol?

Legally inheriting estate handguns, then recreational target shooting, then personal defense.

I left off anything about overthrowing tyranny.

It’s because 50 years ago you might have been a black guy in NC trying to defend yourself from violent lawbreaking white folks, and the white folks thought that you having a handgun might make the whole lynching thing dangerous. The real question is why do the sheriffs still support the thing.

Thanks Spartan, happy to be in a state with more freedoms now. It's definitely a different experience after being in MD for so long.
Welcome to the forum.
Yes, you will even see that rarest of unicorn, the open carry, down here. Even odder, is when you see this unicorn, you will notice that other citizens walk by with nary a care, and do not shriek and cry out with great terror.
Also, you can buy beer at gas stations!

But liquor must be purchased from the gubment.
As opposed to the Glorious Socialist People’s Republic of Marylandistan, wherein one must purchase beer, wine, and liquor from a liquor store.
Seriously, it blew my mind to see six packs of suds, and other sundries for sale at gas stations.

Is it illegal here in NC for booze to be sent to your house thru the mail from another country? I wanted to get some "real" absinthe and try it out. Maybe not a good idea? Lol. I get a lot of those.....sigh...

And he's not joking at all, that's the real reason.

Wait until you see your first brew-thru.

Probably the fastest way to receive a visit from SWAT.

Seriously, I have no idea. ;)

Violations of both federal and state law. It would most likely not get through customs and you’d get in trouble of the sort that would make all your handgun purchase and training considerations moot.

That's what I was told, but I was also told it's ok unless I try to sell it. So I'm going to forget that, and try to find some another way....lol.
Don't plan to risk my firearms/training for a bottle of weird booze! Thanks.

I order booze from a store in MO all the time. Delivered right to my door via FedEx. You can legally import alcohol. You may have to pay taxes on it depending on the quantity.

Unless of course, you're in Robeson County where you can't buy beer at a gas station located outside of incorporated city limits- that's right!

The reason I was interested in this was because I wanted the absinthe with all the original ingredients, which I gather is not legal in the US, though I expect it can be found somewhere....maye New Orleans? Lol. So I went to a site that sells the
"real" stuff, (or so they say), and send it from Germany or somewhere, and was going to order some when I was told it's a no-no. So maybe I get my bff to bring some home from Viet Nam....

I’m from MD as well. Been down here for 3 years. It was definitely harder than I thought it would be to buy firearms. Had to wait about 3 weeks to get a pistol purchase permit and 4 months in Mecklenburg County to get my concealed carry. I was told that outside of Mecklenburg County is much quicker.

Still much better than MD though.

I don't even have the option of leaving this unconstitutional bs question blank.

Not only is the question unconstitutional BS, but so is the entire permitting process. Nowhere is .gov granted the authority to vet, approve, examine or establish a vetting process in order for a citizen to obtain a firearm....in fact, they are expressly forbidden to do so in the Bill of Rights.

The next time your local Sheriff's election occurs and you hear your Sheriff state that he supports the RTKBA, take it with a grain of salt, because I guarantee he/she will most likely try to torpedo any efforts by the state legislature to repeal the permit for purchase or concealed carry.

Liberty is not gray...it's f*ing black and white. Anyone who claims to stand firm on liberty, but only partially, is full of sh*t as a Christmas turkey and has tyrant blood in their veins.

While you are at it apply for a CHP. It will stop you from having to go through this nonsense every time you want to buy a gun. Even if you don't want to carry you will break even after awhile if you intend to purchase more then one gun within 5 years.

Yep, complete your PPP's ASAP and also get the "Don't Juggle Guns In Public" class out of the way. The shooting qual is as some have said something Stevie Wonder could pass. I'll add that that is true if you've ever handled a pistol. I've seen nervous novices with rented guns fail it a couple of times.

(7) administer a proficiency examination which shall demonstrate that the student is competent in the actual firing and safe handling of a handgun. Such examination shall include the following:

(a) The student shall fire 30 rounds of ammunition at a bulls-eye or silhouette target from three, five and seven yard distances;

(b) At each yard distance the student shall fire ten rounds;

(c) 21 of the 30 rounds fired by the student must hit the target.

The CHP is definitely the way to go in the long run. Purchase without the PPP BS, the BATFE allows NC CHP holders to buy without a NICS check. Still have to do the 4473 though. The FFL has the discretion to run the check or not. Transportation becomes easier too. Just remember that it only covers handguns, it is not a CCW permit. There is a difference. Do what you gotta do and hurry up and wait! Welcome to NC and Mecklenburg! It used to take forever plus two weeks for a CHP, a bit less for PPP with a more or less 2A friendly sheriff. New guy may not be. I've heard not. We'll see.

No constitutional carry yet, but we can only hope.

I already have a non-res Utah concealed carry permit, so I'm covered there for now.

The CHP is real handy for those chance encounters when you luck into a deal. Example. I walked in a shop and there was a Charter Arms 32 cal pistol in the case. Price $100. Pistol was a safe queen. Along with the pistol came a nylon holster and a box of ammo. Out came three cards. CHP, DL, & VISA.

Exactly how I happened to get my Sig p238! The CC permit was a handy card to have!

A previous co-worker used to order absinthe liquor from England regularly for over $100 per fith.
Growing or picking wormwood and adding to something would be A LOT less expensive.

Dang, that's an excellent idea! And apparently some form of semi-absinthe can be had in NC, I've been told, so I could add it in.....brilliant idea. Thanks.
*(I'm sure someone will come along presently and give me reasons why this is a bad idea. I already know wormwood isn't that great for you.)

The “Absinthe” sold at the ABC store has no absinthe (thujone). The former employee ‘wasn’t right in the head’. After a few years ‘he’ started cross dressing, came to work with makeup and long sparkly earrings, on a greasy mechanic. He left his wife & kids.

Yeah, and I'll add some wormwood and be all set, right? Lol. First I have to find the so-called absinthe.

For now, for carry only. Just a friendly warning. Do the CHP process ASAP. ;)

When some sheriffs want a good laugh, they look at the laws about shall issue timing. For some reason they've been allowed to openly disregard them. Mine took 166 days total including 3 weeks waiting for an appt. That was with a more or less 2A friendly guy having the clerk of the court clog the works according to some that I trust on that assessment. Now we have a guy that is not a 2A kinda guy and definitely doesn't care for the shall issue CHP in general. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't anticipate anything getting any better soon.

^ Yesterday I signed off on the mental health records release document and the staff at the Sheriff's office said it can take up to 3 weeks.

The law says they have 14 days to approve or deny... They also sent an automated email saying the unusual high volume nonsense.

As for 166 days, that is absolutely crazy. How they can get away with that without penalty is troublesome.

I renewed mine on 12/28. She told me right up front 3 months.
