NC USPSA Section Match 2018

Out of curiosity, anyone know how the range is holding up? Based on rainfall rates I would expect that area to be underwater.
We shot the NC Steel Challenge match there this weekend - didn't seem to be any adverse effects from the rain.

Welp, I read the whole thing. All of it as they asked.

A few questions...

1. Why wasnt there a tentative "rain date" scheduled just like any other event that could be called off due to weather?

2. ( 2 part ). Is there an insurance policy that could have been purchased to cover such losses due to weather cancellation? If so? Why wasnt it purchased.

Welp insurance is available.
Event Cancellation Insurance
  • Event Cancellation Insurance protects your event -related revenue or expenses against cancellation due to circumstances beyond your control.
  • “All Cause Coverage”, meaning that the event insurance policy will cover everything that is not excluded.
More items...
Event Cancellation Insurance - Spectrum Weather Insurance

So now we can choose to either pay $230 combined to shoot a match next year. Or get a $40.00 refund and pay $210.00 combined next year.

Decisions, decisions....

I was ignorant on how these events took place. This sucks to pay again

I didnt know all the little details, still don't. But it sucks to put the financial burden onto the paid participants. All other sports events I had been involved with had some sort of back up plans.

I am having a hard time with the Section powers to be to want/need me to walk away from $100-$140.

Giving a discount to shoot next year doesnt do squat for this years funds out of my pockets since March.

This is a hard one to swallow with little answers but a lot excuses. :(

I was hoping the suspense was for a make-up schedule. Sounds like it was let down.

Here is the email:

Good Day, Shooters,
As you all know by now, we had to cancel the 2018 Carolina Classic Section Match just hours before our scheduled start time. I assure you, no one was more disappointed than I was!!! This had grown into the "Mini Nationals" that I had dreamed it would be. We had 397 shooters registered when we cancelled. That included staff and sponsors as well. I had received emails from others saying that our Section Match was going to be bigger than some Area Matches and that made me proud of "OUR" section knowing that each and every one of you supported it!!!
While we had to cancel it, we also had to make some hard, financial decisions concerning the match. When you're that close to the match, most of the expenses have been PAID or will be expected to be paid shortly after. Most of our sponsors responded to my cancellation email in this manner, "SEE YOU NEXT YEAR and SEND OUR STUFF BACK," so we have had to ship a lot of merchandise back. Some responded 'give it away' so over the next couple of weeks you will get your shirt in the mail and if you're lucky, other prizes!!! We did get to keep some of the major prizes for next year, but not many! On the bright side of this, they all said they would support us next year!!!! While the registration says, "no refunds after 8-8-18", we will still try to do what's best for the section and you, the shooter. You may not know this, but the section match also funds the CRO/RO classes and a host of other things included in running the section, such as a junior camp. If you haven’t been in the sport very long you may not know that the Army Marksmanship Unit held such a camp for many years. Due to funding changes for the Army that is no longer held. The Section stepped up and holds a junior camp now. To our knowledge there is no other junior camp held inside Area 6. For example, it cost the section $6,000 for all four CRO/RO classes this year and although we do charge $50 to take the class, we only get about one third of that money back. Ten people in a class and we get $500 back, we still must pay the other $1,000. Please understand that HQ requires a minimum student count. In an effort to keep prices down and still have classes, we pay for the class even below these minimums. Additionally, there are other expenses a class will have. These expenses are lodging, meals, and transportation (rental car) for the instructor. Sometimes, we have to cover range rental, and classroom rental fees. And we also cover lunch for the students. These expenses add to the $800 charge from USPSA for the class making a class more costly than just the student fee. Our Section Match supports and funds the NC Section the rest of the year. Some sections don't offer what we offer to pay for and they expect the clubs to fund their own classes with no help from the section.....they don't do what we do!!!!
So, with all that being said, here are the options that we are left with for next year. The Section will offer two options and because this is "OUR" section, I'm going to let you decide. Comped shooters should talk to their sponsors as well. We are going to set up a separate email so that you can vote your choice for PLAN A or PLAN B, here they are:

PLAN A: We are going to shoot and support two Level 2 matches,
one the last weekend in March, SC SECTION MATCH at Low Country, NC. The other one will be our NC SECTION MATCH but we're moving it to the first weekend in November at CGGR-Asheboro, NC. Now, here is how the money will work,
we will knock $20 off the entry fee for the SC Section shooters in March and for the NC Section Match in November,
we will offer $50 off the normal entry fee of $140. The NC Section match fee will be $90 for those on the paid list for this year.
That means a total of a $70 total discount.....
The link to SC Section match is https://practiscore.com/coastal-car...-south-carolina-section-championship/register

PLAN B:
We will refund $40 dollars to all paid shooters and
we will make the November Match at CGGR-Asheboro, NC fee $110 instead of $140. ONLY THOSE SHOOTERS WHO PAID the 2018 match fee WILL GET A REFUND.....If you were comped please talk to your sponsor about which plan you like, THANKS!!!
That means a total of a $70 total discount......

These plans were UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED by the Executive Committee, MDs, at the Section meeting Saturday night. All MDs were invited to the meeting and here is who participated:
Mike Fritz-Low Country
Del Photo-B&R
Parrish Ketchmark-SFE Shooters
Chris Britt-APSA
Robert Walker-Sir Walter
Dan Dorion-Rowan
Brian Wolf-Rowan
Rick Dean-Pitt County

Our Section Secretary, Jim McBurnett, will be sending out an email about this very soon so we can get this behind us and move on towards our goals for next year!!!! You can vote PLAN A or PLAN B, but if you vote more than once all your votes will be discarded, this makes it a fair vote and we hear the voice equally of "ALL" the shooters who support our section. I have asked one of the past Section Coordinators to help tabulate votes to be neutral.......I have no input!!! MAJORITY RULES, so pick your plan.......

I MET WITH THE CPA TODAY AND EVERYONE WILL RECEIVE A 501c3 DONATION LETTER IN ADDITION TO OUR PLANS ONCE WERE APPROVED.

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE SUPPORT FROM YOU AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR!!!!!

........................................................ ..........................

I really like the part about them spending the entry fees on other ventures except for the state match itself. I know some funds were spent on the match. But all other funds should not have been spent till the match was held.

By my guessing, 300 paid shooters at $140 each =$42,000.00

If only $40 refunds are available, $12,000. There was $30,000 spent on a bunch of other stuff., none of which protected the event from weather, fire, war, the range closing down, Armageddon, the coming of Christ etc.

I thought they raffled off a PCC or two to fund the Junior camp? Over all that's a tough spot to be in because of the money involved. Need to see if one of the clubs that can hold an 8+ stage monthly match will let us call their November/December match our state championship.

This was my thinking. Regardless of what the additional funds went to, I’m struggling to understand why a match that has been paid for needs to be paid for again. “Send our stuff back.” Okay, done. Unless the venders were providing stage props crucial to the stages I don’t see why that matters. Seems to me that there was nothing consumed here money wise unless the facility was paid to host, accepted the money, and expects to be paid again. Not like the targets spoiled, steel broke down, and all the walls/foot faults got swallowed by the ground (okay maybe that last one). I’d be fine with a smaller prize table and a 1:1 ratio of match fees paid to matches shot. I understand that Florence handed all of us a s**t sandwich but it seems like I just got asked to take the bigger bite. Maybe I’m missing something.

And yet no one thought to cover their asses.

Raffle WAS to fund the junior clinic. I had forgotten all about that. Now Im even more curious as the monies

Its the way I see it also...money was poorly managed.

The last three weeks of studying and this is what they come up with is sad.

And what in the hell is NC section doing to get involved in a Level 2 match with SC section. Let the SC section do their own thing.

On one hand, I layed this money out months ago and have all but forgotten. Really looking forward to shooting it, but I have other more important things to raise my blood pressure.

On the other hand a concert I was planning to go to last weekend in Kentucky was cancelled due to weather and they are providing full refunds. That event I could see FAR more money being layed out which is non-refundable. Never thought about it before, but event insurance seems to be an extremely smart play for large scale matches like this.

Someone on FB hit the nail on the head. USPSA is at a turning point, it has grown significantly (the last few years especially) from a hobby centered sport to basically a business. Headquarters needs to begin laying out some ground rules/procedures for level 2 and 3 matches to keep the integrity of the brand.

The newest email:

2018 Carolina Classic Sponsored by The Blue Bullets
All,
A special called N.C. Section executive committee meeting has been scheduled for Thursday night.
The committee as a whole will make a determination of the path forward and what options will be offered.

No correspondence will occur until that meeting determines the outcome of the event.

We thank you for your patience.

Brian, if you need to forward my email, go for it. I doubt I am the only one in my thinking.

Thanks for your response. I encourage all shooters to reach out to there local Nc match directors as we form the “executive committee “ and will be voting on another plan Thursday.

I have no dog in this fight but if I did, here are my thoughts right or wrong.

Level 2 matches are a “for profit match”. Anyone who paid, paid with the expectation of receiving the service that they paid for. If that person decided not to go after a certain date then the money they paid would be forfeited. However, I have never understood the statement of no refunds to mean that if the service could not be provided then there would be no refund. I personally believe that any investment made by any entity, with the expectation to make a profit, would be a loss to the entity in such a situation but not to anyone who had paid for the service.

Basically I think it’s a load of crap not to issue full refunds.

I have no dog in the fight either. I didn’t sign up for the match, and won’t sign up next year, even if it’s free...but, there has to be more transparency than what is being shown here. The money went somewhere and the lack of transparency as to where only leads to speculation.

Sort of on topic but just a general question. Is there a reasonable way to make teaching RO classes less expensive to the Section? Like if each state had a teacher, surely the Section wouldn't have to spend $6000 a year for classes.

Last I knew, there are only 10 RMIs in the whole organization.

Who wants to go through all the trouble of becoming an RMI so you can spend your weekends flying all over teaching for nothing? About 10 people, I guess.

There is transparency. The Match Directors in the section are privy to the finances. Go read the bylaws, it's all there.

If each state had one you wouldn't be flying across the country. You also would only teach once or twice a year.
