I am totally new to using slings. I have a Ruger AR556 and would like to get a basic sling to make handling a bit easier. Being totally new to using slings I don't have the foggiest notion on what works well.

Slings are kinda sorta like holster in use and personal preference ...

I like a good basic 2-point sling. A good deal on a plain basic sling is Magpul’s RLS for under $20 ... I caught one on sale for $15 at Midway before Christmas last year. Now it does not have the fancy quick release swivels or fancy quick slide adjustments but it is a solid basic sling. For the fancy Tacticool sling I like the VTAC original which runs about $45 with it quick adjustment setup if you are looking more along those lines.

Can't go wrong with the Vickers, though the Magpul MS1 looks to work the same & for a few bucks less.

I was going to post this exact thing...BFG VCAS is an awesome sling. No long tail on it like the VTAC.

I do like the Magpul RLS for just carrying my bolt guns over my shoulder

Nothing truer, save time, money, mistakes etc. and just go with it
Used by most of our spec op teams for a reason
Once you understand/use proper sling technique in general (A must do for anyone serious about our hobby) you will see why this sling is top rate, in quality and usability

All my opinion ymmv

Thank you for all the suggestion, I will check them out!

I'm a big fan of the standard milspec 2 point sling for shooting. Its what I have on most of my AR's, and I've put them on some shotguns for carrying over the shoulder.

The adjustable slings like the vickers/magpul are good too. There's a bit more going on, but once you get used to using it it works for carrying, shooting, and for a low-ready style carry too.

First determine your needs. Defensive use, hunting or carrying to and from the car on the range. Also you need to look where your sling swivels/points are on your rifle. Under the gun or along the side? Under the gun is the traditional way to carry over the shoulder ie parade carry. On the side goes back to mounted dragoons or modern warfighters where gun is worn across the chest. Third is a single point where as name suggest only one attachment point generally near the rear of the pistol grip area and hangs between your legs.

Each has their uses depending on how you want to carry it. Remember the sling is to allow you to carry the gun hands free. I would suggest just a standard USGI 1" nylon sling till you figure out what and how you want to carry. Its cheap too. You can also make your own, just need 2 keepers and a cotton/nylon strap.

This, I have a few of them and love them.

My nephew is a cop and I gave him a Blue Force sling when I build his AR and several officers ended up liking his sling so much that they ditched what they were running and picked up a Blue Force like he has.

A bud recommended the Vickers when I got my first AR & I've put 'em on every one of my ARs since. Perfect for hunting (& dragging) carry & great as a shooting aid. Can't speak to door kickin' nor competition, but they work for me. Woulda been hella nice to have in the Army.

I have several slings already mentioned and my current one is this one from Armageddon gear. It is a little strange. It has a very strong bungee type rubber in it and it pulls the rifle tight to your chest when you drop it, a la a single point only its much higher up and doesn't move much at all. When you go to press out with your rifle the bungee binds tight and PULLS the gun into you pretty hard. You actually have to muscle it around. But it holds the gun to you very tight. At first i thought something was wrong and it was too small for my big chest but it works. It's different than the sling types everyone is making now. That bungee does make a very solid hold possible and ends up supporting a chunk of the rifle weight which can make it nice for reloads on a heavier rifle as you don't have all the weight resting on your middle finger of your firing hand. It does some things that others don't.

Bought a sling from Larue that has bungee cord with QD swivels. Like it better than any other type that uses QD release points. For milspec hookups take a look at the old OD green M14 slings, hard to beat.

For some reason I have always been the, "give the little company a chance" guy.

I just picked up one of these, fast shipping, very nice quality. Rumor has it a very popular sling got their design from this one although I can't confirm that.

Really like this sling.
