I looking at purchasing a 44 magnum revolver. Im gonna hog hunt and deer hunt with it some. Also gonna target shoot with it. Considering the following two. Please give me advise and if any of you have experience with either.

1. Ruger Super Black hawk hunter 6.75 barrel.

2. Smith Wesson Performance Center M629 magnum also 6.75 barrel.

Thanks for the information.

I waffled between a 629 and SBH for awhile. Not for hunting, just a big bore fun gun.

I ended up with a SBH mostly based on price. It scratches the itch and shoots really well. Good CS is nice if I need it.

The hole in the side of Smiths really bums me out. Also, their CS is garbage if you need it, at least in my experience.

6 inch or a 7 inch with a partial underlug is my option for hunting. It’s a good balance, recoil is tame, and the barrel gives good velocities.

Look at Ballistics by the inch for the 44 Magnum compared to barrel length.

If you’re looking at a Ruger, then consider a Ruger Super Redhawk which is overbuilt and you can shoot the heaviest loads if you wish. However the best trigger is in the S&W and a Taurus. Yeah, a Taurus. Ruger has a mediocre trigger.

If you’re going to use a red dot, get a Weigand rail.

I don’t shoot single action revolvers.

I have 7 44 Magnum from 2.5” to 9” barrels.

These range from 22 WMR/Magnum to 500 Magnum. 454 Casull is my favorite caliber amongst them all.

This doesn’t include my Taurus 44 Magnum Raging Hunter, S&W 629 Performance Center 2.6” 44 Magnum, and my other revolvers like the S&W 500 Magnum 6.5”, S&W 460 XVR 4”, Chiappa Rhino 60DS 6 Shot 357 Magnum, etc.

With 44 Magnum you can hunt anything in North America.

Smith revolvers are great. I'd go with the Super Redhawk, then have someone fix up the trigger.
I was going to the RSR, then found an Anaconda for a deal.

I have 44 Magnums from S&W and Ruger. My least favorite is the old SBH with the long barrel and square trigger guard. The newer SBH with a shorter barrel and a rounded trigger guard is much better. My favorite single action 44 Magnum is an old Vaquero. The Ruger Alaskan is fine if you want a very short barrel. A Super Redhawk with a longer barrel would be better. I have a 629 with a 8+ inch barrel and one with a 6" barrel. The shorter barrel is long enough for me. I really like the S&W 44 Magnum revolvers and shoot them most of the time.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either one. I know I shot my 629 better than my Super Blackhawk but that was me personally, not the weapon.

Super Blackhawk Hunters have 7.5" barrels. The Hunters are shooters & nice guns. Heavy, but that just helps soak up the recoil if yer planning on running feisty loads. Also comes with scope rings & machined for mounting an optic if that's your thing.

I'm a single action nerd, so the SBH Hunter gets the nod from me. I've got a .41 Bisley SBH Hunter & love it.

If you plan to shoot the 300+ grain loads the later variants of Smith’s 29/629 from about 1990 forward are stronger in critical areas just for that reason.

I have a Ruger Super Black Hawk 5 1/2 barrel In 44 mag. Love it. Carry it when I hunt deer as there are a lot of bears where I hunt as well. Great shooting gun and very accurate right out of the box with no issues.

My choice would be a 6.5” PRE LOCK S&W New enough to be drilled and tapped if you want to add optics
Taurus Raging Hunter
Ruger Super Redhawk would be fine too

The only .44 mag I have is a 329pd, but Ive been considering getting a 29 or 629 once day.... perhaps a Redhawk.

I dont think you can go wrong with either choice, it just comes down to if you want a single action or a da/sa.

That 329pd kicks a bit I assume.
Indeed! Carries like a dream though.

I put on a set of VZ 320 square conversion grips and it makes a big difference in usability, as it keeps the frame from being exposed, but its still pretty vicious.

The surprising thing is the recoil is very "straight", and recoil recovery is pretty fast due to how light it is.

Everyone Ive handed it to to try out, excepting one person, has always handed it back with live ammo left in it.

Had a SBH. Wouldnt hit the broad side of a barn. Have a Ruger Super Red Hawk and still not what I would call target accurate. It it is minute of deer at 50yds.
