Every few years when I start having connectivity issues I typically replace the wifi router, and that usually resolves the issues. My Cisco router is maybe 3-4 years old (guessing). Every couple of days now our connected devices will get kicked off and we have to reconnect, or I often just reboot the router and modem. Sometimes I have to call Spectrum and they ping the modem through their automated system and that works/helps. I’m usually never sure exactly what the problem is or what fixed it.

Is there any easy protocol I can perform that would confirm or determine whether it is the router and not the modem, or connectivity to my neighborhood?

Thanks in advance.

If you have a laptop or desktop with an Ethernet port, you could try connecting it directly to the modem. If the connection remains reliable, the router’s likely at fault.

If you aren't using external DNS servers you may want to try updating those settings. I use 1.1.1.1 as my primary and 8.8.8.8 as my secondary. This will off load the router having to handle these request and may increase the amount of uptime you get from your device before a reboot.

Also, there is no active cooling on home equipment and heat can cause decreased performance. Review how your equipment is placed and see if that might be an issue.

As @Jeppo pointed out, the process of elimination is about the best way to troubleshoot it.

Theres an called Wifi Analyzer that will show you what’s happening on the wifi radio bands in your house. It showed me that one of my home wifi radios would intermittently shut off. And that most of the neighbors were crowding on the same channel, which can cause problems when I’m also on that channel. Check it out, it’s free.

Well lately spectrum seems to suck ass here at my house. Their speeds suck and it lags so badly. However

1 get a new modem from spectrum if you rent. I do this once a year.

2 look into a new router. I have the linksys wrt ac 1200. I would buy the AC2200 now.
