This is probably just me venting but I would be interested to know what you all would do. A little bit of background... I live next to a farm and that neighbor is one of those "millionaire farmers." I don't really have a problem with him; the farm is usually beautiful and I'm happy to have it next door. He is a bit of a jerk but more on that later.

The other neighbor is a busybody from Pennsylvania. He annoys me on a regular basis but on this particular occasion he had a clash of personalities with the farmer neighbor and it ended up screwing me specifically. Long story short? Months ago when we had so much rain for like a week I lost a few trees in a sudden windstorm. The line of trees is what separates my yard from the farm I was describing. Now I have a big gap...

So first of all I called the farmer on the phone to let him know one of the trees fell in his corn. I chopped it up into logs and stacked them next to my yard (no big deal) and he was completely fine at this point. Unrelated to any of this we had been having some drainage issues with all the rain this year coming off the fields and running through our yard. Somewhat related that's why the PA neighbor is wound up so tight... the people who owned the house before me knocked down a berm in that treeline so they could turn it into some kind of natural sitting area thing that didn't pan out. When these trees fell it changed the course of the water and PA neighbor took the opportunity to "go off" on the farmer neighbor.

Keep in mind all of these issues are mostly on my land. It takes a HUGE rain for the water to run hard enough where anything cuts through PA neighbors yard. I took the wood I chopped up and make a two-foot tall "retaining wall" where those trees fell, and caulked it with mud... I was actually pretty proud with how it turned out. The reason those trees changed the course of the water is because them uprooting destroyed part of a ditch. The retaining wall bridged the gap between those two ditches and the mud I used in the wall came from a new ditch I dug. We had zero drainage problems during the time the wall existed.

Okay that's all background information. Today I'm in bed with a normal cold, no COVID, and I get a text from PA neighbor saying farmer neighbor is going to be here at 11am with his tractor and a blade to push up a new berm like the last people destroyed (he is at the bank and will be home as quickly as possible... doesn't arrive until about 1pm). OKAY FINE. I go outside at about 950am and... the damage is already done. The farmer and his tractor have already pushed up a hasty berm in all the wrong places and destroyed my little wall. Also he knocked down another tree, although it's this Chinese pest called a "tree of heaven," and finally killed this little dogwood that barely survived when the other trees fell. So just to recap, my retaining wall that was working just fine is toast, two more trees are toast, and he pushed up such a massive berm in that one spot its halfway up my brushpile. NOW, if I burn my brushpile or move it? The berm is going to fall over...

Sigh. So this is what I think happened. Farmer guy originally said he was going to do the berm thing at the end of September when they cut the corn and never showed up. I didn't care because I already fixed the problem. PA neighbor got mad and probably pestered farmer neighbor every day for three weeks until he showed up. Farmer neighbor was probably irritated so did a hasty / crappy job. His personality? Eh... months ago when I called him to come look at the problem area he didn't really care... "well what do you want me to do about it?" We were actually having a good conversation about possible solutions when PA guy walked up, red face, waving his arms etc.

I can fix everything on my own it's just a pain in the butt because I already had plans for that area after the trees went. It took me several days to dig that ditch and build the wall... I was extremely sore afterwards too because it was hard work. Now everything else I was going to cut up and all the logs from the wall are covered in mud so my little chainsaw is screwed. Guess ill get an even better workout this time using an axe?

Right now I'm still in that "whatever" mode though because I don't feel great. Free thread, do whatever you want, just don't post pictures of those women with manparts.

Thanks!

So was the wall you built on your land or the farmers land. If on yours and he destroyed it and then built a berm on your land I would lose my cool. If he destroyed something you built on his land and built a berm on his land I wouldn’t do a thing because you shouldn’t have built your wall on his land.

I have pretty good neighbors, one lets my wife graze her horses in his pasture when it’s not hunting season. He texts her if he’s coming out so we can move them to our land and I help keep the fence line clear. A win win for everybody. The rest of the neighbors mostly keep to themselves and wave if they pass by while we are out.

Could you fix this with a six pack of beers and an evening around the firebowl for these two? Sounds like these people need to chill out.

Also, I agree. How is PA neighbor ordering farm neighbor to dig a berm on your land?

I'd undo whatever the farmer did on my land, redo it however I wanted, then tell them both never to step foot on my property ever again. Sounds like they both took advantage of you trying to be a nice guy.

I would echo this but I'd go get the farmers tractor to fix it myself. Simply because it sounds time consuming.

I would call both of them over. Explain a little about property rights, mainly it's YOUR land. Tell them exactly what you want done and give them a week to have to done. Explain, in little bitty words, that at the end of the week, if it is not to your satisfaction, you will hire a contractor, have it fixed, and bill them evenly. If they object, let them know you will see them in small claims court.

If the water flows where nature intends then it is not your problem. If you concentrate the water and discharge it onto your neighbor’s property you may have problems: It doesn’t sound like this has ever been the issue.

I’d decide what you want for your property first, then, only if your plans can accommodate the neighbors’ requests, you get to be the good guy.

Can you borrow the farmers tractor and fix it yourself.
Then put up Ne Trespassing signs.

Does this PA guy run around in a Biden Shirt? Go to get my haircut today at SportsClips. I have the app... signed in had a 34 minute time frame and showed up in 3o minutes.

Boom... Name in the first spot and my girl was finishing up her customer. While I am waiting, a mother comes in with 2 small boys for the other lady. She signed them up online too...

Then the Typical Biden Wearing Northern sounding guy walks in and asks, "Do you take walk ins?"

Yes, just sign in honey... the lady said. After about 4 minutes of waiting... he walks into the shop where they are finishing and says, "Is there an ETA on when my time is ready?"

The lady says.. Bless your heart... it's right there beside your name on the scoreboard!... He looks around and says.. I think I'll come back later....

Let's just say I know the type... the problem isn't the farmer... the problem is the guy from PA. Sit them down over a beer. Explain to the fellow from PA what the deal is, and have the farmer send HIM the bill.

Yes all of this happened on my property; beyond obnoxious. I am feeling better today so ill go out there and get a really good look. If I estimate it's gonna take me more than three hours to fix I will pursue other options.

Thanks for the comments guys... and no, oddly enough the PA guy is a huge Trump supporter. He's the only one in the neighborhood with excessive signs and flags.

Maybe you should host a CFF gathering and swap meet. That would almost certainly ensure they’ll never come near your property again.

Man its just neighbors. I have had a very similar situation. Ive had a bunch of tree fall right at corner of my property on to millionaire neighbors 8 acre parcel no where near his house. I had the first one cut up and the jackasses that did it kinda sorta got the wood on my property. 2 more trees fell and nxt door neighbor never said a word but got the tree cut up and gone before I could do anything. The other one fell on my property line but mr millionaire came out there standing over it giving me the stink eye. Eff him. I never did shit. Its still sitting there and I am letting nature take care of it. Nxt door neighbor is never home but when they are he is not happy unless he has an internal combustion engine running for no good reason. He bought a great big riding lawn mower and has less than a 1/4 acre to cut which he never does. He bought a back pack blower just to blow leaves off his driveway on to his at one time meticulously landscapped yard. He drives thru said yard and parks a big ass construction trailer in it and this is on sod that someone has had installed twice. If his (wife?) ever smiled her face would crack. She only comes out of the house to go to the mail box or drive off in one of their ever changing inventory of rolling stock. They are putting in a pool and that has tragedy written all over it because they probably wont put up a fence and have a little daughter that they pay a nanny to look after when shes there. I could go on forever about them.

My next house is going to be in the middle of 100 acres minimum with a fence and a mine field.

I say be an adult. Work it out with them. If you can not work it out, you need to look deeply as to why you failed. And readdress the situation and make it work.

Because as I read the post, if EVERYONE is the A--hole, but you, odds are its not them.

Small sample size of 3. So those 2 neighbors could very well be a- holes.

I bet the PA guy has a wife that is the real problem and most I know don’t know the first thing about drainage so if possible keep the berm and contact a landscaper that can turn it into the envy of those concerned. Never piss off a female, works for me.

Back half of my property is wooded. Neighbor behind me keeps clearing a little at a time to expand his yard. I’m about to introduce him to barbed wire.

neighbors are like puppies. sometimes they're great and you get along well, sometimes they won't be trained and you just want to take them for the shotgun walk...
At the old house where we had about 12 feet between houses, one neighbor was great and politely notified us when they spotted a problem (hint hint) and promptly responded when we notified them of one. I'd hand them rifles over the fence to look at. The other neighbor was a nightmare and we had to give up talking to her and just started calling code enforcement because she wasn't fixing anything. Of course then she fussed at us for calling code enforcement instead of just talking to her... How many times do we really have to tell you your sewer cleanout has overflowed onto our driveway again and how many days should we wait before you get around to cleaning it up? And I don't need YOUR dogs crapping on MY lawn, that I mow regularly (yup, started shoveling it right onto her porch after long enough). and I don't need to hear your excuse that you're trying to teach your kids responsibility and it's really THEIR fault, not yours.
Seriously, she said "well you guys must just hate dogs and that's why you're so mean to us"... while we were hand feeding leftovers to the other neighbor's dogs and playing with them. No, b- we just hate you because you're an awful person who milks disability money from the public schools, lies on property records, and gets your totally normal kids listed as disabled so you can steal the supplemental money. Code enforcement already knew allll about you the first time we made a complaint.

Sometimes you can't do anything but build fences and hope they do the trick.

Could be. or not. I say be the grown-up, find the right angle to engage with and win the situation.

He was the grown up already, He let them mess around on his property. Now it might be time to lay down some rules and boundaries. I’m not saying drop F bombs on them, just let them know in no uncertain terms that he will me making all alterations and decisions about his property.

I can't imagine Any situation where any of my neighbors would Ever do such a thing. Ever.

Our neighbor up in the mountains asked me permission if him and his wife could mushroom hunt our property. I laughed and told him we are barely there and would never know. Knock yourself out. Just don’t leave empty beer bottles on the deck or anything.

Full bottles are OK, correct?

When we finally break ground on the new house, we are leaving a minimum of 150ft of woods between our cleared ground and the property line. Plus we will be about 900ft from the road.

Nothing wrong with being the asshole. Just sounds like the OP wasn’t asshole-enough. My neighbors learned that I’m one within a week of buying this house. It’s been a blissful 5+ years now of them leaving me the f alone.
