I know a bit about the UN intervention (or lack of it) during the Congo crisis in the early 60s. I have heard of this event, but that's about it. After watching the movie I will have to read the book. Really good movie, and I liked seeing the interaction between the Irish commander and the French mercenaries.

Just read the link. Sounds like a movie I'd like.

Another 2 really good movies of the same genre were Hacksaw Ridge and The Battle for Sevastopol

I knew I would like Sevastopol but I wasn't sure about Hacksaw Ridge. Based on the story line I expected it to be preachy which isn't my thing but it wasn't at all. Excellent movie that I would recommend even to an atheist.

I haven't seen The Battle for Sevastopol, but liked Hacksaw Ridge "OK." The best part of Hacksaw Ridge was the last 20 minutes, which were outstanding.

The Siege of Jadotville, though, was excellent, and now I simply must read the book....

Pretty effed up how their own people left them hanging in the breeze. But that's politics.

When I was in college, ECU, I co-wrote a chapter of a book with a poli sci professor about the UN intervention in the Belgian Congo (that means I did most of the research and the first draft; he edited and did all the easy work). That whole thing was about as effed up as a football bat; from the get-go it was doomed to failure. The only thing that could have potentially resolved it a bit faster was if Dag Hammarskjold didn't die in a fiery plane crash.

It makes me mad that the Irish company performed valiantly and brilliantly, but were treated like crap when they got back to Ireland.

Jadotville was awesome. Hacksaw Ridge I turned off during the basic training portion as it was too damn cheesy

I saw it listed on Netflix and passed, but it looks like I should maybe watch it. I liked Hacksaw Ridge, but need to look for The Battle for Sevastopol, now, too.

What?!?! Are you serious!? Vince Vaughan deserves an Oscar for his compelling, true-to-life, portrayal of a WWII Marine Drill Imstructor. By golly, I stood at attention and SALUTED him he was so inspiring!

I had a moto-boner and felt like my three years wearing a campaign hat was misspent not being....whatever it is....he was....

I'll agree with the "Vince Vaughn sucked" part. It was really two movies...one his "tribulations" before combat, and "trials" his time in combat. Separately they would have been garbage and great. Together they kinda made the movie "meh" for me.

I can't for the life of me figure why they Vince Vaughn had a role in the movie. It was a total distraction and cost the movie much of its gravitas.

1. I saw this flick like the day it came out. I really enjoyed it....those guys were friggin shafted and hung out to dry. just another reason to hate the UN
2. vince vaughn grew up, that's why he was necessary. he was phenomenal. a great actor and a patriot. chicago pride and a gentlemen. my wife was a FA on one of his flights. said he was just a normal dude like the rest of us; called her mam and was respectful, unlike the rest of the hollywood slime she has dealt with.

Passed on it for a while just because I don't think Netflix's movies are that great. They make some really good shows, but movies are usually lacking for me. Found this one really well done. I enjoyed it.

Just watched it. I thought it was really well done and enjoyed it.

Can't believe it took those pricks till 2005 to finally honor those guys.

He might be a great guy, no doubt about that. But he was absolutely horrendous in this role. I mean, not just bad...he was laughably bad.

Yeah he sucked in that role. But the rest of the movie was worth watching.

He's crying because the director is telling him he's got to redo the scene with Vince Vaughn again

I finally watched The Siege of Jadotville tonight. I thought it was a pretty good movie. Really sucks how they abandoned them guys and treated them afterwards though, so that the UN could save face.

I haven't found an English version of The Battle for Sevastopol yet. Is it only in Russian?
