I've got an 18" 6.8SPC for hunting/longer distance & a 10.5" .300BLK (soon to become 8.5" & suppressed) for 'bump in the night' purposes. Put a 16" 5.56 together for the missus & decided I 'needed' a pinned 14.5" 5.56 for myself as a general purpose/utility gun.

Picked up a couple of the PSA 'Minute Man' lowers recently & have been savin' my sheckels & lookin' out for deals. Was eyeballin' the PSA pinned 14.5"er at $379 or thereabouts, sans BCG & CH & thinkin' about maybe springin' for the extra for the BCM. Cruisin' Primary Arms & they've got the Troy pinned 14.5" SOCC upper for $479.99. Thinkin', damn, that's not too shabby & started readin' the details, 12.5" Troy SOCC M-Lok, pinned & their pinned & welded Medieval flash suppressor. Cool, then I see it not only comes with BCG & CH, but Troy's folding Battlesights as well. Should be here in a couple days :D

It'd cost over $600 to set up the PSA upper to the same level. I swear, I don't know how they do it, but I'll take it.

Now I have to figure out what I want to do, optics-wise. Not sure if I wanna go with a 1-4x LPVO or maybe a fixed 3x prism.

Update- Just ordered the last of the parts needed to put 'er all together.

Steiner PX4i is going into a ADR Recon QD mount & a Geissele SSP will be pulling bang switch duty. Figured as long as I was building a "serious" AR, I'd splurge on a couple items I ordinarily wouldn't & wanted to try some new/different pieces-parts & ordered a BCM Mod4B CH, along with their Gunfighter Mod1 grip & Mod3 VFG, a B5 Bravo stock & a Blue Force Vickers sling.

I definitely did not plan to put so much moolah into this AR, but once I made the mental leap to ponying up for the Steiner, it just didn't 'compute' to cheap out on the mount & trigger. Rationalizing that it'll be my SHTF/go hide inna woods gun didn't help, either :D

This'll be my first really nice AR & I'm looking forward to getting 'er together & to the range.

I think I've enjoyed building over buying.

Maybe it's all those boxes showing up at the house.

I've always bought complete uppers & assembled the lowers. Never tackled building an upper, but will be re-barreling my .300BLK before long.

I've only built two uppers, but it taught me a good bit.

I dunno about all that, but I am going for a 'if I can only grab one long gun when things get weird, this'll be it' thing. Perfect would be a cut down barrel & something like a Vox-K pinned & welded at 16". :D

I just adore my 14.5" middy. With the Steiner. It does it all. Great combo. It's handy and capable of speed and distance. Perfect AR storm.

It's weird to me how much difference 1.5-2" of barrel can make. Or lack of barrel I should say. But I prefer 14.5 over 16 by more than I should.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to getting it done. I always hated the M16A1/A2 & was amazed at how much handier the M4 was, the few times I got to tote one. I would really prefer more oomph than the 5.56 provides, but come the Boog, I'm much more likely to be able to scrounge 5.56 than 6.8.

I used to not particularly care for the AR platform, but shot one of Tom's one day at the range a couple years after I retired & realized not only was it kinda fun, but that there was no denying 20 years of training & muscle memory with the platform.
