Ok guys I have been shooting a Glock 17 in competition for about 5 years now in limited and open. So I'm looking to change up some. But I can't decide what to get. I thought about getting a double stack 1911 from rock island, or a cz but just don't want to spend $1000 just to get started( extra mags, holster, sights etc).

So I'm thinking about getting a m&p 5 inch. For about $700 I can get the gun, mags, sights and holster and can play.

I'm not looking to go to nationals or something just fun.

Any other pistols I should look at? The pistol needs to be double stack, 9mm, and have good aftermarket support.

Thanks

I don't think a CZ SP-01 would run you $1000 just to get started. Was that the model you looked at?

I’d recommend the M&P, I love my 5in pro series CORE. Really good out of the box trigger and huge aftermarket out there for M&Ps.

Hard to beat plastic guns for value performance. Hard to beat CZ for shooting performance.
Know a lot of really good shooters who use all of the above. Know many with M&P's.

I think the most important thing to consider is what division and what matches do you want to shoot?
If it's a specific division you'd pick a gun that is appropriate. 2011 and M&P are so far apart it seems you are putting the cart before the horse.

The realities of differences between the glock and the mp are very slim to almost none.

Go all metal, CZ, Tangfo or STI(ish) for a noticble differenc in gun handling. @Starkherz199 could probably weigh in more on the transitions from Glock to CZ and the bennifits gained

It will take a week to 2 weeks of dedicated livefire and dryfire to transition...that's it. As long as you are practicing that first DA pull in dryfire, the rest is easy. It will be harder to reload with smoothness and I'm not sure why. You'll just have to get used to those metal mags. After two livefire practices you want even notice the extra weight of the metal guns.
What will be immediately pressing is the metal guns are a great deal more accurate than the Glocks and M&P's. That is not debateable. And you can run the SA triggers on the metal guns so much easier and faster. I have shot Glocks my whole life, and the first magazine thru my Shadow 2 made me immediately sell both my G34s.

If you're shooting 9mm...

TriStar P120, all steel DA/SA for less than Glock money, 80% or more parts compatibility with CZ SP-01. A few springs away from a reliable 6.5lb DA 2.5lb SA.

I won't say it's better, but it is very different to shoot.

It had a rmr and a Burris FF3 but I took them off.

@NKD I want to run limited. I like irons with no comp. I find it a lot more fun vs production.

I agree its the funnest division. Although I think maybe open is, but I can't afford it, lol.
I'd go with a metal gun in .40.
I was really resistant to going to .40. Because I was perfectly happy with 9mm. But after I got a decent limited gun and starting shooting it I loved it. It's so much more challenging than minor. It seems to expose all the weaknesses in your grip and technique. Really makes you a better shooter.

But every time Todd Jarret comes out and shoots Limited Minor, he kicks everyones ass. So 9mm is doable.

I have to say, that gun really surprised me. That is a true bargain for what you get..

Have you ever considered a Canik? I have a TP9SF and it is awesome! To me anyway.

I mention this because IIRC someone here bought a TP9SFx to use in competitions. Hopefully they'll see this and chime in.

Mine was $375 OTD at Gander. I see the SFx version for about $525 online.

They are fine guns for sure! The price is just icing on the cake. I had one that was awesome but decided to sell it to avoid adding another platform to the collection. I know @Mike Overlay had one that he shot a time or two in USPSA as well.

What makes you think you need a new gun? Or, do you just want one?

Well..... I'm also looking at adding a SJC brass magwell and their frame weight to my G17 as a option too....

The tristar p120 looks like a great option but I can't seem to find one with a steel frame in stock

If you want a steel frame gun, get an SP-01! Great guns that will make you hate you waited until now to get one! I have 3!

I feel you're doing yourself a disservice by shooting a 9mm, plastic gun in Limited. There's no reason to handicap yourself by shooting minor when everyone else is shooting major. I can't sit here and throw a bunch of scientific terms to validate my reasoning either. Friends don't let friends be serious about competition and shoot plastic

@Ben B can add some insight to moving away from plastic to metal

I picked up a Sfx for about 430ish, just before the popularity increase on price. I put a dot on it for carry optics in USPSA. The gun will definitely not be holding one back for being on top of the leader board.
Its a damn good pistol for the money. Best out of the box striker trigger you will find. Extremely accurate and can be used in many different classes of competition divisions.

I get the original posters point, hes been competing with the same gun for 5 years and is looking for something different to hold.. Give him 2 more years and its called the 7 year itch, but that usually ruins your life.. Im starting to think the same way, but its taken me abit longer. Ive been competing with the same 1911 since 1983 and am getting a bit bored with it. Its been improved upon since then to say the least, but its still the same old gun..Been thinking lately about a double stack minor,,engage with present time and embrace new technology. But, then I think about the cost of the whole outfit and wonder if its worth it.. This next comment isn't related, but maybe it is.. Back a few years ago, I made a comment to the old wife about her age and she took offense. I responded with " Dear, you should be happy I like old things that Im comfortable with" She went back to doing the dishes and I think Im going to stick with what works for me. Guess Im stuck with my 1911.

Damn you for posting this. Now I have a new rabbit hole to go down....

Wonder if they've quit importing them. If it is a P120 it is steel.

The T models are aluminum. The S models are steel, short dust cover.

Not sure anyone makes a magwell for them. I feel a magwell is mandatory for Limited, but then I feel major is too. Definitely no thumbrest. And my reading indicates no fat or ambi safety, apparently it is one of the parts that is not compatible with CZ. Sweet gun though as a low price range toy.

Have you ever shot a Canik? I bought a SF model and i jsut love it, I have about 12k+ rounds through mine. The trigger is outstanding, it is extremely accurate and reliable. I bought an SFX, but i like the regular Canik. I also have the SF elite. For the money they are excellent.

Thought about getting one but I want to get away from a plastic 9mm.

Ok guys need some more help. I WILL be getting a single stack 1911 in 9mm. Why 9mm because I like it, all my handguns are 9mm and I'm setup to reload it.

Now I have narrowed it down to 2 guns. The rock island ultra fs single stack. Around $550 after shipping and transfer.

Or the Springfield range officer PI922L. It's the same as the RIA but in SS. But it's around $850.

Both will be getting a Dawson's precision ICE magwell and Dawson mags with their bases.

I really like both guns but don't think the SS is worth the extra $$. Input please. Thanks

Get the R.I. and take it to Jeff Abernathy in My Holly and have him put a customer trigger and fire control set in it. Put in what ever recoil spring he suggest also.

Thank me exactly one week after you get it back.

I’d definitely go with the Range Officer. That is what my wife shoots in USPSA and she loves it! Extremely nice gun for the money. Hers is pretty sweet! So is she, but that’s a story for a different forum ;)

You don’t want a Rock Island to shoot competition. Someone will be here shortly to tell you how they’ve never had any problems with their Rock Island, but do they shoot competition? Probably not. I’ve never seen a RI at a match that the shooter wasn’t having issues with.

If you really want a nice single stack 9mm, the Dan Wesson Pointman 9 is the best non custom 1911 on the market. They aren’t cheap, but for good reason.

Most guns at matches have been tinkered with so while match observations are useful, they should be used with caution. If I based my 1911/2011 buying decisions on match observations I wouldn't buy any at all.

Not at all. 9mm or even better, 4tay for the win. Stupid soft minor loads, or darn good major loads

Do you shoot single stack 40? If yes, which magazines do you find to be most reliable and I assume you load longer OAL? I have zero interest in going the 2011 route but I might be open minded to single stack 40.

Do you shoot a stock gun at matches? Do you know anyone that does? Assuming you actually shoot matches and or may know someone who does?
