New competition 9mm handgun

Do you shoot a stock gun at matches? Do you know anyone that does? Assuming you actually shoot matches and or may know someone who does?

The answers to all of those questions can be inferred from what I already typed. What is the point you are trying to make?

I prefer not to assume. Or infer as you describe.

I shoot matches, thereby I know a lot of people do, and very few shoot stock guns at matches. I have on occasion but not a majority of the time.

Ok guys need some more help. I WILL be getting a single stack 1911 in 9mm. Why 9mm because I like it, all my handguns are 9mm and I'm setup to reload it.

Now I have narrowed it down to 2 guns. The rock island ultra fs single stack. Around $550 after shipping and transfer.

Or the Springfield range officer PI922L. It's the same as the RIA but in SS. But it's around $850.

Both will be getting a Dawson's precision ICE magwell and Dawson mags with their bases.

I really like both guns but don't think the SS is worth the extra $$. Input please. Thanks
JUst did a lil bit of research on the RI Ultra in 9 mm and Im really liking it, especially for that price.. I think it will suit you well and if you want to in the future? Bling it out a bit with some stainless controls to make it all yours.. Ive got a friend of mine that competes with a CZ in minor and just had to have a 1911 in the same caliber. He bought the Rock island but its the Govt model and its been giving him some trouble feeding reliably. Hes done some tweaks to the feed lips, altered his OAL loads and the last I heard has some success with using 115 grain heads but he is still not confident enough to compete with it.. The RI Ultra FS seems to have all the good stuff already on there and feeds consistently.. Im liking that gun a lot ! Welcome to the 1911 club..

@Lager I'm not new to the 1911 game :) I have owned many. Springfield, ria, kimbers, and one or 2 customs. But I sold them about 6 years ago to go plastic... I still have a ria double stack 22tcm/9mm combo that my dad shoots. I have had good luck with both Springfield and RIA. Neither have ever caused me issues.

Going today to handle a few and see what makes me happy:)

Well it seems like you lost your mind 6 years ago but luckily you found it again.. LOL...

Well..... I got this today :) cleaned her up and I will be shooting her tomorrow. The trigger breaks very clean at 4lbs with my wheeler gauge. I have magpul grips ( weight loss), and a Dawson's precision magwell coming.

Put 200 rounds through her this morning. Man I'm in love. No recoil, goes right back on target, just awesome.

Sight in target.

Only malfunctions were the slide not staying back on empty mag but then I realized I was holding the slide stop with my thumb.... lol fixed that then no more issues!

Guess it was time to retire my old 45 anyways.. Its served me well for the past 30 years.

Lol I let a guy at the range shoot it and he said that pushed him over the edge, he was going to buy the 10mm version they had at the shop.

Rock island ultra fs in 9mm

Looks a lot like my 9mm, hope yours acts perfectly all the time! Lol. Pretty, aren't they?

Hey Dale,, I been thinking about this topic and your new gun everyday and its been driving me a bit crazy..I know you decided to continue with the 9mm and I was thinking about going that way also instead of the 45 ACP. But, after lots of thought? I do need another 1911, the one I have is a bit shot out and no wonder after probably close to 500,000 rounds thru it.. Since the Rock Island offers a lot of value for the money and the only upgrade I would want is an extended slide release ? I think Im going to call my gun shop and see if they can find me one in 45 ACP. Ive already got crap ton of mags including 10 rounders for Limited 10 and lots of reloading supplies. I just hope my experience with the Rock Island is as good as yours has been..Have a question tho,, the fiber optic front sight ? Ive never shot thru one, is it round or squared off like the standard sight. Do you think there is an advantage using the fiber? Why Im asking is that the only difference between the standard FS and the Ultra is the front sight and the better grips, that I can tell. The standard FS has a steel front sight post and fancy grips. Ive got lots of grips, so is the fiber opic front sight worth the extra $ ?

@Lager the front optic is round. The advantage is that in sunlight the front sight has a glow to it making it easier to pick up in daylight. I like a plain black rear sight and a fiber optic front. It makes it very easy for me to pick up.

The fiber optic that comes with this pistol is ok but not great. It will probably be replaced with a Dawson's precision eventually but all my pistols get aftermarket sights so take that with a grain of salt :)

I like that logic. He shot your 9mm which has minimal recoil, but then wants to buy it in 10mm which should be a monster to try to shoot. Maybe he's not going to compete with it though?

Lol ya it would just be a range toy. He doesn't compete.

Its just one more millimeter, how bad could it be

I to decided to ditch my 45 ACP 1911 in favor of the 9mm. I liked Member Dales Rock Island, but I also liked a friends Citadel due to slide cuts and other then that ? Its all the same gun. So, I bought the Citadel from Buds guns for $521, 5 days later its in my hands for an additional $20 transfer fee. Since Im a bling kind of guy,I had to improve it a bit. So before I even shot it? Here is a pic with some Vz Grips and a stainless mag well already installed. I'm not liking the ambi safty because its size gets in the way of the slide stop. I don't need the ambi safety? Call Wilson, stainless of course. Slide stop, needs an extended, Wilsons. BUT,, If this one shoots as good as Dales and my friends, I will be darn excited.. The sights are clear and well made, the trigger is super for a stock gun. The slide to frame is tight and the barrel is fitted very well. Im looking forward to this weekend when I can air it out a bit..
