So I finally convinced Home Depot to replace our POS Maytag dishwasher that has been on a constant repair cycle since we bought it in 2013. After much persuasion they refunded our purchase cost... apparently threatening to drag the corpse of the old one into the Home Depot and loudly explain how it almost burnt down the house, gets their attention.

The background is that it was just repaired on the 22nd for a bad chopper blade that they replaced. I ran it the night of 26th, came home the next day after work to the smell of burning plastic.

That's right, 426 degrees, about 18hrs after I started it. No, it's not the oven.

Basically all the plastic melted off the racks and deformed the sprayer arms. They wanted repair it, no thanks. After much deliberation on their part as to me asking them, " Google says Home Depot in Cary is busiest on Saturday around 9am, should I bring it over there then?"..... I have a full refund, plus tax and $50 for "the inconveniences".

So... what's a good dishwasher that won't burn my house down?

Bosch or Samsung. Worth the extra coin and I have both. Samsung in my house and bosch in the rental. Never had any issues at all.

I will remember who the misogynists are...

Ooh ooh! Pick me!

Not really sure it's really misogyny when you give everybody a hard time regardless of gender, sexual orientation or a baffling love of XDs. But I'll wear the badge anyway lol

In all seriousness @NCMedic give the Samsung models a hard look.
We replaced all our kitchen appliances about 18 months ago and went with a Samsung dishwasher and gas stove. They are great products and we haven't had any trouble with any of them
Give LG a look, too. We went with an LG fridge instead of Samsung, but only because it was on sale and a couple hundred cheaper. It's a quality product, too. I can only speculate their quality would run over to their other appliances as well.

Wow..I'm really surprised you had issues with a Maytag. It's the only DW I'll buy!!! I've had $800+ LGs, and about everything else. Maytag is the quietest and cleans the dishes the best. Sorry you had issues. Look at reviews online...home Depot and Lowe's. They show the 1-5 star rating and how many people are reviewing it. Wish you the best.

We have a LG fridge, washer and dryer. No issues with any of those, the Maytag was higher rated at the time, so LG probably is going to end up high on the list

I can say that I have been surprised as well, it was the highest rated one at time in 2013 when we bought appliances, it ran fine for the first year or so, then the control board got infiltrated with steam, fried it, they replaced it, then it wouldn't run a cycle completely, replaced the panel again, then seal went bad twice, leaked all over, pump went bad, replaced, overheated and they replaced some parts again, seal again, chopper blade destroyed itself on something, replaced that and the doors seal again... been one thing after another until this week. Maybe it was built on a Friday, I dunno.

If that's the goal, he should just keep the one that preheats to 426F.

Hell....at this point I should just keep it and figure out how turn it into a smoker. It is stainless steel inside.

Brilliant, a smoker that cleans as it cooks. :D

I replaced my GE last year with another GE. The one I replaced was the original when we built the house in 1986! It was loud as hell but I never even replaced the hoses on it! And, it was still working fine when I finally did replace it last year. I figured if I get half the life out of the new one , I'll be ahead of the game.

I will remember who the misogynists are...

Mom went through five different models of dishwashers...a Marshall, a Douglas, a Jeffrey, a Glenn, and a Vickie.

It was a long time before I knew there were dishwashers named Maytag, Samsung, and LG.

My experience has led me to choose whirlpool over everything else unless it’s a water heater. I won’t touch anything Samsung and I understand that most appliance repairmen despise LG.

Mine finally took a dump today too. It was a 10 yo whirlpool that didn’t even fit in the 24” wide opening ??? We went to our go to appliance place and got a $650 mid line (not the cafe series) ge. My parents had a Bosch that almost burned down their house when the electrical cable overheated and melted down along with the wall outlet.

I have a whirpool now that came with the house, 16 years ago. We've replaced an overflow valve (5 years ago) that appears to be holding up well. It makes more noise now than it used to but still cleans the dishes. We'll keep it until it completely turns up its' toes.

That is some shoddy wiring/circuit breakers not dishwasher.

Trust this guy - he seems to know about FIRE!!!

That said, I have a Frigidaire cheapie from 2008 that has never been more problematic than being somewhat noisy. Gets the dishes clean most of time, i.e. when I load it. When The Light of My Life Sweet Wonderful Woman (aka she who hates washing by hand) does, not so much. I speculate this may be because she packs & stacks so much into some very imaginative configurations that the likelihood of detergent-laden liquid passing through is <nil.

My $0.02. YMMV

Home Depot has several Whirlpool on sale right now....

Go to Sears outlet and buy one of the discounted ones.

Just did this to replace a fridge today. We've bought appliances from them a few times over the years with zero issues. 50% off for a scratch on the side that is facing the cabinets and completely covered in normal use? Yeah, I'll take that deal.

Whirlpool would be my second choice. When my POS Samsung fridge went out for the 2nd or 3rd time, I went and bought a Whirlpool fridge while I was waiting for the warranty repair. The Samsung is in my garage and keeps my Coca-Colas cold! Repair guy said to buy American to have it quickly repaired. Samsung parts had to come from Korea.

The Best Buy outlet store has really good deals. It is on capital blvd close to spring forest. They bring all the scratch and dent from the region. They are only open Friday Saturday and Sunday. Also prices are negotiable.

Most domestic brands have motors made by GE, nobody makes them better at a great price,
I've had three Maytags, I replace them every eight years or so, we run them hard.

Did you have a service plan when you got the DW or was this warranty issue with Maytag?
The service plan (an insurance policy) is run by a third party and not Home Depot.

Discmaimer, I work p/t for Home Depot and my comments are my own.:)

I'm sorry but I couldn't disagree more!!! The Korean appliances have excellent styling and great features but the overall build quality is lacking and getting parts can quickly turn into a nightmare since they've selected a single 3rd party master distributor for each US and Canada. Most parts aren't stocked in North America. LG and Samsung treat appliances like consumer electronics. They have very quick development cycles, hence the great tech/features, and expect you to replace them with new versions at about half the time of the average consumer (5-6yr vs 11yr).

Bosch os the standard for dishwashers. There's a good reason when you walk into most kitchens in $1M+ homes that they have 2 Bosch dishwashers, and it's not in case one breaks! They are built very well and are silent. All current dishwashers suffer from mediocre wash quality due to the strict DOE regulations that get tighter every few years.

I work in the industry and know it rather well. If I didn't get my company's top of the line Italian made unit for nothing, I'd have a Bosch.

OP, if you hated your maytag, be aware that Maytag is a whirlpool brand. Whirlpool owns maytag and the kitchenaid brands in addition to their namesake.

This is not that uncommon. Many places "throw install accessories in for free" and therefore source the absolute cheapest items they can find. This often means cords that may not be UL listed, cords that have sub-par cooper or insulation, using exhaust fan venting on dryers, etc. Sometimes it's the installer being too lazy to replace the old item that may be well beyond it's useful life. Old hoses burst and flood homes. Old cords crack and short.
