Ok, they don't build 'em like they used to...

After about 10 years my DVD player is taking a dive.

No big deal but I am not starter than the average bear.

1. Do I need WIFI in a new onr, what's the use?

2. Can I see other apps like HULU, NETFLIX and such through the DVD player.

I believe I should get an upscaling and 4k player for when I get off my cheap ass and upgrade my TV, riight?

What else is there that I don't know what I don't know?

Thanks guys

1&2) WiFi is nice so that you can get firmware upates and use apps like Hulu, Netflix, etc. (Although any decent new TV will run those apps natively.)
3) (Additional numbering beyond 1&2 provided by me at no extra cost) Any 4K TV you buy will do it's own upscaling, and unless you are spending big bucks on a high-end 4K player your TV will likely do just as good a job as your player. So upscaling is not necessary, and the main reason you'd want a 4K player is if you plan to watch 4K discs.

Thank you for the moral support Bailey Boat!

It's the least I can do, honestly!!! Besides, I'm in the middle of my own "advanced tech" project. I'm converting all of my cassette tapes to MP3 so I can download to my laptop and then to my MP3 player and flash drives so I can play them in the boat....... How 'bout them apples??

Besides, it sounds like @Vyntage understands what you're after......

At a minimum you want a Blu Ray player. A smart one would only be necessary if you don't already use another means of streaming.
A 4K player is great but not currently necessary .

I use the computer or a Roku box for streaming. The smart TV and the smart Blu Ray are superfluous.

I’ll throw one other idea out. I’m not sure if you have kids or grandkids that might like a gaming console?

When I bought my 70” 4K TV I wanted to buy a 4K player. It was ~$100 more to buy the newest XBox at that time and it was a 4K player. Easy to load apps on and use for a lot of other stuff.

Just figured I’d toss that out there as some wouldn’t even think that was an option.

...and I hardwire most everything here instead of using WiFi.

Do they still make DVD players? I thought everything had gone to Blu-ray and 4K?

SMART ASS! :)

Thanks Waylon, but I'll skip the gaming. My youngest is 40 and I try to keep the grand kids fishing, shooting or reading when can!

I knew Blue Ray was mandatory, forgot to mention that.

I'm quite surprised at the pricing of new DVD players. Cool, I am not springing for a bbetter TV for a while yet though. 42" 1 080 is enough for now. I have space limitations anyway so have to be careful of total width no matter what the diagonal image area.

Thank you all for helping out my digitally impaired ass!

Compared to old ones, they are built like paper airplanes. Almost like they are made to go into a desktop computer. My nephew Pete ( mental/ physical handicap) has killed 1 a year for 2 years..

I have TVs and players with apps built in but I still went with a ROKU HDMI fob.
The app is easier to control and can be controlled from an app on my phone.
Plus the Roku fob can plug directly into my mini projector for outdoor viewing on the deck.
I still buy 4k disks for movies I actually like and know I'll watch repeatedly. Though u do use Vudu to watch the digital copies.
But the digital services area not guaranteed to be available down the road.
Regarding hardware.
I bought an LG 4K player. Haven't broken my 1080 65 inch yet but planning ahead.

If you have a vudu account, you can but digital copies of DVD'S by scanning the barcode of the case. $2 for dvd resolution, $4 for Blue Ray resolution.

Digital copies are great for travel. Download tok tablets and you are all set.
