New indoor range in Durham?

Crazy! If true, I wish them well. With TSA right down the road, competition will be stiff.

Well, it seems this is a project of Jason Mitchell (aka "Molotov") who is the owner of Triangle Krav Maga. From the little I could come up with so far it seems he is trying to repurpose the property of the WalMart on Martin Luther King Blvd in Durham to repurpose it into a multi-use facility. Funny thing, last night a "youth" was shot in the parking lot of the adjacent strip shopping center ... not the worst part of Durham but not the best either.

It looks like the "project" (if you can call it that) would include a Krav Maga gym, indoor archery and firearms simulator along with an indoor range with a budget of under $2million? While they'd had the building shell as a facility the range alone with back stop, wall and ceilings reinforcing plus the requirements for air handling (EPA, NIOSH and OSHA regs to meet) would eat a big chunk of that. Then add the lane booths, target system and such there goes another chunk. Then throw in miscellaneous facility wiring for the other stuff they list along with the day to day operating costs ... I ain't business smart but unless he has more capital behind him than what the website is mentioning than shoestring budget would be stretching it.

Then in Durham? The permitting necessary for this and from the liberal Durham city and county government? The crappé they are going to get from the neighborhoods around that facility and so on. The anti-gun flack from the leftist side will be interesting to say the least. I may be way wrong but the timeline indicates a opening date from Fall '17 to Spring '18? It's mid August already and they are saying Fall of this year? Maybe if it didn't include a GUN RANGE but the construction of that with the various inspections and permit sign offs from the government entities that will need to sign off from electrical to environmental to structural will be a major undertaking alone. TSA had a hell of a time with their build and Bill had a way bigger budget, real estate experience, governmental bureaucracy dealings, etc. This Bang project will be an interesting thing to watch. Don't get me wrong, I wish them all the luck and hope they pull it off but I truly think they are going to have some major hurdles they don't foresee or maybe aren't saying ...

Big dreams.
I wish them luck in their endeavor!

As a Durhamite, I welcome this effort but won't get my hopes up. However, every venture has to begin somewhere, so maybe this guy and his team can be the ones to do it. I applaud them just for trying!

Firearms 'simulator'! Not a actual gun range?

Simulator as a game, but yes an actual 20 lane range. I will support it with time and money. Every community needs to be armed and trained. I will give them what I can.

Believe it when I see it. The political hurdles will be huge. Unless of course Coach K and the entire City Council are bought off.

If they meet the requirements to abate the enviro impact study, I don't see how they could stop them. My biggest concerns is that they will only have gang bangers and thugs as customers based on the location. I go to the movies down in that neaighborhood often and it can be rough depending on the time of day.

I find the sales pitch lacking.

Buddy you said it. That was an absolutely terrible pitch. The very first paragraph doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

How is a Krav studio best qualified to open a gun range? I can think of several gun stores that would be more suited to open a gun range. No offense to Krav, but how is a group of martial artists training primarily in groin strikes the "most qualified". Yeah, best of luck to them but I'm not buying.

TKM has Firearms Instructors on board and routinely offer CCW Permit Courses and other firearms related training. I've trained with them periodically over the years (not a member) and quite frankly there's not another Martial Arts school in the area that teaches the range of topics they do; Active Shooter, Urban CCW Courses, Weapons Retention and take away, Survival and Evasion courses etc. Their annual Winter's War Course is one of their best offerings.

I'll call it a method to the madness with Molotov Mitchell and I wish him luck getting this up and running. TKM has some very good instructors and course content but man this is a huge project to undertake and like many of you mentioned dealing with local Government is a nightmare.

I wish them luck. The place is only a 5-10 minute drive from my house, so if he can get it up and running I will definitely give them a shot (so to speak).
