So growing up, I always wanted a DSM turbo car......and a convertible. How about both?

1996 Mitsu Eclipse GS-T Spyder
210hp(prob 170 to the front wheels)
120K miles, probably at least half of which were driven by a little blind old lady

2.0 4G63T runs strong, has a bit of a whine coming from one of the accessories or belt

Bought it 2 days ago, and the drive belt to the water pump and alternator broke on the test drive.
Before that it ran fine, so the upside is I bought the car cheaper as-is.

Put a belt on it, changed the oil, put some premium priced fuel in it and it runs and drives great. Good power up to around 5500 then the turbo becomes a restriction. Its gonna get upgraded pretty soon....

Old lady got tired of dumping money into it (new tires, battery - typical maint items) and donated it
to a non-profit. I bought it from that arrangement for less than KBB value.

From my memory and brief google-fu, I know these cars came with the smaller Garrett T25 turbo, but the 2G DSM
has a better flowing head. The early DSM turbos (Mitsu TD05H 14B and 16G) are big upgrades. I'm am going to do basic maintenance first (timing belt first and foremost), then address the big dent in the passenger fender. The door was spared the wrath of Mrs Magoo thankfully

I had a 96 E-clipse in high school. I wasn’t a turbo or convertible but still a pretty fun car. Hope yours is as fun as mine was. Congrats.

Can't remember what year/motor, buy at some impressive hp numbers, the crank would "walk" in the bearings, obviously causing all kinds of problems. Cool car man, good luck, looking forward to the updates.

Crank walk was in 4g63 motors, can't remember the years but the eclipse and evo's shared the same motors. Can get some killer power out of the cast iron block for sure. Congrats!

I feel like if you mod the blow off valve/by pass valve it'll hold the boost a little longer in the rpm range

look up crushed bov

thrust bearings on a stock shortblock are good to around 350 on a 2g. Crankwalk was much talked about but seldom seen. I don't plan on exceeding much past the stock boost level, albeit on a more efficient 14b or 16g mitsu turbo. The stock fuel system is good up to around 275whp and then it needs some serious upgrades. Side mount intercooler will be replaced by a front mount if I get the 16g.
The small 16g is a really efficient turbo for the money and they're everywhere

Very cool! One of the cars I wanted most in HS was a GSX or TSi AWD. A friend got a TSi AWD and it was awesome though he never modded it.

Your memory is correct, the 16G’s are the way to go for the most performance for your buck while not sacrificing drive-ability. I believe the exhaust manifold was pretty restrictive as well, but all in all getting 300hp wasn’t difficult in 2G’s.

I always wanted a 1990 eagle talon tsi awd was one bad ass car.
Me too man. I remember my buddy had a poster in his bedroom with Goodyear Gatorbacks being OEM on all these 'hi po' cars in the early 90s. Grand Nationals, Corvettes, Mustangs, etc.
One was a Talon Tsi AWD. I remember the 0-60 in Motor Trend and C&D being well under 6 secs (which at the time in 1992 was blistering) and I was like AWD is the future!!!

Another buddy had a friend with a 1990 Plymouth Laser, which had just been awarded 'best bang for the buck' in MT for 1991 or 1992. It was sub 15 sec quarter mile times around 98-99MPH, which also at the time,
was BLISTERING esp for under $14K. Then I was awoke to the fact that sure, AWD was fast, but other than launch and maybe rally racing, FWD with the same powerplant was always faster :D

My best friend growing up (RIP) came up from Charleston after his family had moved. He had a Talon TSI.

We spent all weekend running around thinking we were something, we were 16/17 at the time. This was in 2002. Hard to believe time flew by that quick.

I am not positive but I think the 2G manifold and the EVO Mani are similar if not the same. When I do the turbo upgrade I will port match everything with my carbide and sanding bits I have from the good old SVO hotrodding days. There's a guy on YouTube called Jafromobile with a 2G Eclipse running 20+ psi on a big 16g turbo. Pretty good info on that channel.

Where's the top leak?
not sure...there's no holes that I can see, but there was water in the rear boot and in the rear floorboards. I have a cover for it but a new top isn't crazy expensive. When I get around to the body fixing I will probably just replace it

Or I may just get a can of camp sealer and spray it good and call it a day :)

Rear rain gutters are notorious to leak. And channels that are supposed to divert water get blocked with debris.

It was the 7 bolt engines that had crank walk problems. Guess which engine you have @Ikarus1, yep the 7 bolt Also it is an interference engine

yep. and it has 120K mostly trouble free miles on it. I expect at stockish power levels it will never ever present it's ugly head. That's why my conversation hasn't turned to the 20G or Holset turbos, a racing clutch setup, and a standalone fuel system. It's a stylin and profiling 'vert not a pro-street car.

By mid 96 they had fixed the issues with the 7-bolt engine IIRC. It was an oiling issue also.

You mean you ain’t gonna put a direct out nitrous injection with enough NOS in there to blow yourself up?

I have never been a bottle fed baby. With the kind of stuff out there for tuning turbo cars with E85, nitrous is for cheaters and corner cutters [emoji14]

I would love one of these to convert to an EV. Yes, I am more geek than car guy.

Nice snag there fun little cars, good friend had a gst in college with mild work done. Think he got a 9.3 in the 1/8 out of before he got the tranny launching it on a sticky track. It had more left in it but he decided not to try getting another tranny. A bov on it turned alot of heads from the sound.

took it for a good little 30 minute drive to my BIL's house yesterday. with 4 ppl in the car it needs more power :D

Just for future DSM reference, this guy has an interesting take on 'crankwalk' on the 7 bolt 4G63T. Funny he got 45K miles out of his engine, drag racing it, running 21+ psi, etc. They're tough.

I went and made sure my 'hidden bolt' was present above the halfshaft. It is present, and tight.
