I've been seeing some construction off 73 by the Lake Norman dam over the past few months. Had a chance to check it out over the weekend. It's a nice new boat ramp! I really wanted to fish that area but it would have been a long paddle from the closest access that I could put in.

You did notice that it doesn't allow canoe launching and has NO single car parking, right?? Only 10 vehicle/trailer parking spaces.

Are you serious?!? Canoes are allowed just no dedicated canoe launch. Nowhere were there signs saying no canoes or only vehicles with trailers.

If you want. I live 1/2 mile from there. I can park your car at my house.

Unless there are dedicated and marked spaces for vehicles with no trailers if you park in a spot designed for a vehicle with a trailer you'll be towed. I've seen it happen at the Neck Road ramp on several occasions. Canoes and/or Kayaks are not allowed to launch from a boat ramp. Beside it maybe, but not on the ramp. Another ticket...
You might think about taking @LeeMajors up on his offer and avoid the consequences.....

So what if you tow your kayak/canoe? What if you use one of those 2 wheel trailers that just straps onto the tail of the craft and is not connected to your hitch directly? Do you just sit that thing in the trailer space?

Seems like a dumb set of rules.

I have been talking to the NCWRC in charge of building and creating regulations for those ramps.

@Bailey Boat is partially correct. o_O

Canoes and kayaks can be launched at the ramp. The problem resides in the parking spaces. They want to be consistent with the current rules. If you trailered your kayak to that boating access area, you could then launch the kayak and park in this area (with trailer).

The final plans are not etched in stone at the moment. Since that ramp will be popular with canoes/kayaks I've requested the area accommodate at least two vehicles without trailers.

Maybe a hybrid, two singles or one with trailer?
Is there parking along one side of the drive from 73 to the ramp?
If NCWRC owns the lot on the other side of 73 could that be designated as overflow?

just to spell it out....are there 10 and only 10 legal parking spaces for vehicles which must have trailers attached to park there? there is no legal parking for anything else?

Getting the parking info for that particular ramp. It's all gravel right now, but it is open.

Other ramps have hard top, lines and signs as to where to park.

Could you park at that little Duke lot across the street and walk down?

Remember the old saying: it's a rule because some jackass needed it. I've seen some of the dumbest, rudest, and jackassed-est actions at boat ramps...and I'm not even close to being an "avid" boater who's there frequently. Maybe 2-3 times per year I'm at a ramp, either here in NC or down in FL. And EVERY time, there's some butt wipe that tries to ruin it for everyone.

I'm not at all condoning a nanny state full of rules. I'm just pointing out how the many bad seeds ruin it for the rest of us.

At the risk of starting the whole kayak, canoe, boat thing all over again, boats are the only craft that pays any taxes/fees for the ramps to be built. with that in mind who should have first/best use of said ramps?? For whom should the parking spaces be devoted??
I have been on countless boat ramps where the fukin kayakers have the entire ramp tied up while they figure out their "float plan". Here's one for ya, put it in the damned water and GTF out of the way. It becomes a social gathering instead of a launching and getting out of the way. And it's usually worse when taking out.
Back to the point, fees pay for the ramps, if ya ain't paying fees, ya got no right to the amenity. End......

BB, I agree with you on that, but not so much a grumpy tone.

From the WRC bylaws: "The sale of hunting and fishing licenses, federal grants and other receipts provide financial support of the agency".

    WRC builds the ramps.

And it's WRC that collects the fees paid by boaters which Kayaks and Canoes don't pay. Until you pay something you shouldn't have a say or use.....

My thought in the OP may have gotten lost. I will be fishing.

Plus, when I talked to the WRC person he was only interested if the ramp would be popular with canoes/kayaks. He never mentioned fishing but was looking for input to create a couple of single parking spaces.

With the popularity of kayak fishing being on the rise like it is I think they should incorporate single vehicle parking into all ramps. I have a jon boat and pay the taxes and registration on it, but prefer to fish from a kayak. Also trailer my kayak quite often because I can’t fit two in my truck bed. I also pay for my sportsman license and saltwater license every year. The resource should be there for all to enjoy, not just the people who only enjoy boating.

Their the only one's paying fees, your license doesn't go toward things like ramps...
