New UDS

Ive been needing to build another for awhile. Finally broke down this week and did it. I had a brand new unlined barrel with a removable lid. I’ve never cooked in a flat lid UDS myself, but I built @thrillhill one a couple years ago and Becky uses it often. I still need to add handles and I think I’m gonna add a hinge for the lid and lid clamp. I’ve recently discovered hinging a flat lid on a smoker so I’ll give it a shot. Didn’t have time this week. I needed to get it drilled, burned, painted , and hardware added to use for thanksgiving.

After drilling the holes I had a bunch of oak limbs that needed burning so I used them. Burned it til the paint fell off the barrel.


After cleaning excess paint flakes off, washing and priming




I’ve always used whatever cheap ass paint I could find to finish it off. This time I bought tractor paint from tractor supply. If you take your time with this stuff and do about 3 carefully applied coats, folks will accuse you of using an auto body spray gun to apply the paint, it turned out that good. Kubota Orange


It’s in the driveway now, been running at 240 for and hour and a half with one cap off and the ball valve open halfway. I’ll add more pics as I make a few changes.

What does the inside look like? Ive always wanted to build one of these as what hobo would not want to cook in a barrel. Nice job on the color too!
