Hi all,

I am happy to be included in this community. I am a new user to CFF, and a relatively new firearms owner. I didn't even fire a gun until I was almost thirty, and I got my first firearm in early 2017 because I was working in and commuting through a dangerous area. At this point, I live and work in areas that are very safe, fortunately, but I continue to collect and train with firearms as a hobby and as an exercise of my constitutional rights and role as a responsible citizen.

Professionally, I have a background in history and especially archaeology, with a decade of field excavation seasons at sites across eastern Europe and the middle east, but I am currently focused on a career in education and mental health--teaching part time (I used to teach full time) and taking grad classes and internship to become a school counselor.

I know educators sometimes get a bad rep from the 2nd amendment community... and in many cases it is based on accurate evidence of a teacher's misunderstanding of firearms and unhealthy transmission of biased and/or false information to children, which is a serious problem.

As a teacher and education professional, I strive for honestly when working with students (mostly middle grades and some high school, though in the past I have worked with everything from kindergartners to university students), and I do occasionally tell students that there is a topic inappropriate for their age or that I am not comfortable discussing with minors, but in the context of firearms I often get interested students with questions (frequency of student interest was actually one of the reasons I initially became invested in learning more about guns).

In these contexts I do discuss firearms with students, emphasizing above all safety and accident/negligence prevention, secondly I talk about legal information that could potentially impact their future (and sometimes their parents' future because I've hear some...things), and thirdly I talk about anything they happen to be interested in that I have knowledge about that is appropriate and healthy.

The upshot in my case though is that I am a teacher (by trade) and I will soon be a school counselor, and in both cases I have summers free (when I'm not digging). Furthermore, I also enjoy firearms as a hobby and low-intensity exercise of my constitutional second amendment right (I own semi-auto rifles but don't carry semi-auto rifles into Chili's), and I was thinking I might try to look for a summer and/or weekend teaching gig doing basic firearms safety and handling instruction. Does that sound viable? As a late-in-life firearms owner and educator I think I have value in terms of understanding potential new firearms owners and their perspectives that might be more (mis)informed by the media, TV, movies, and video games than by experience and relevant information.

Thanks again for including me!

Well, howdy, and welcome aboard.

I think you could become a firearms instructor if you want to. In your profession (teaching kids), I would practice extraordinary caution, and be prepared for false accusations and unjust punishments/rulings, etc.

I hate to think it, but it's probably just a matter of time before you're accused of something nefarious for simply being open to disussing firearms with your school students.

Do it! Just be prepared for biased backlash.

I think you'll find that the stereotypes about gun people hating academics is about as true as the stereotype about academics being anti-gun.
Yes, you'll find some that live up to the reputation, but for the most part we either don't care, or we care much more about what you do for/against the 2A than what you do for a living.

BTW, you're not the only person around here who has done some teaching...

Welcome to CFF enjoy the forum

Welcome from Brunswick county and Afghanistan. As another who enjoys teaching children firearm safety/use I would suggest searching on how to obtaining your NRA instructor certification. Don't know if the Boy Scouts in your area need an instructor there is also the 4H clubs. Reach out to NC Wildlife for the hunters education course as an instructor.

Appleseed is always looking for instructors. With your background, you would be a natural, as the half of the focus that isn't firearms is teaching history.

https://appleseedinfo.org

You would be working with all age groups and skill levels, helping people perfect the basics of marksmanship.
Heck, take a class yourself one weekend and see what it's about. If nothing else, you might gain some proficiency with a rifle.

Edit: should have also mentioned it's a volunteer position.

Welcome!

That’s a lot of them there fancy words, I don’t like it and I don’t like you.

But seriously, there’s plenty of smart people here with all types of backgrounds. Lots of smart folks here.

Welcome to the nut house! Lots of knowledge about many, many topics here.
Lots of great friends to be met here, also.

I used to be a Scoutmaster. I loved working with the boys; the parents, I made some good friends and met a few I didn't care for. BSA did allow some very structured firearm exposure run by the Council (not the local troop) with rifles, and for the older boys, handguns. But when the boys had graduated out of the program and were in their late teens, I would sometimes invite specific individuals and their parents to come over to some land I had and blast away on tin cans, gongs and cantaloupes. The favorite? S&W M&P 15-22 with a red dot.

I would talk about safety, but I also would break down an AR-15, and show them the basics of how it worked with the gas system and the BCG. They were the age where they were thinking about careers, and I'd use the rifle to illustrate mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, and even soldiering. It was some of the most rewarding time I ever spent with those boys.

Welcome

Am a teacher too, high school.
Started a shooting program at my school. Go do the same, it's awesome

Welcome and thanks for joining up with us here. I'm hoping you'll find this to be the very best internet hangout ever. Please reach out to others and invite them to join up with us also.

We're SO MUCH MORE than a firearms forum !

Welcome. My FIL is in the same line of work as you, but sides with the looney's that think you shouldn't own firearms, to the point where his view of historical events has become skewed without any supporting data to prove his theories of the founding father's intentions. It is refreshing to see an educator that has warmed up to the 2nd amendment, as most don't.

Welcome. Based on the hat and your introduction, you will henceforth be referred to as “Indiana”, as has all ready been pointed out.
You might as well change your name now.
