Never fired one, but all my reading here has me me want one.

I'm old and blind and fat, not to mention ignorant on this matter.

1. What is the difference between RMR and ROR?

2. I see Holosun has " Shake Awake" technology that seems smart. Does it function properly?

3. Do many folks put them on their EDC guns?

4. How do I mount one on a 1911, 220 or 229?

5. What are the most highly considered brands?

6. Is it difficult for and old man to acquire the hang of it?

Thank you in advance!

RMR is a trademarked name, never seen ROR before.

I have a Holosun, I have never used the shake awake or auto adjust, I have seen people very hindered by auto dimming, on the Holosun the functions are married to each other.

Some people put them on EDCs, more everyday, the Trijicon RMR is generally considered best for that, small size and durability being more important there than the clear big window that competitors prefer. I would not use a dovetail mount for EDC.

There are 3 choices for mounting, find a dovetail mount, they sit high, don't cowitness, add another connection that can loosen, but cheap and no permanent modification; buy a slide or gun that uses adapter plates, they mount lower, may co-witness, can change optics by changing plates, still add another connection; mill your slide, lowest, can co-witness, only two fasteners to worry about, married to the mounting pattern.

Trijicon, Leupold, SigOptics, Holosun, Burris, Vortex, they all fail, the first four seem to generally be failing less as time goes on. There is no standard mounting pattern, currently I think there's four main.

They're not awful, there is a slight learning curve.

Not sure he still does (might’a changed guns) but, @Zbizzle911 had a red dot on his EDC piece.

I suppose if you're the kind of person that can run, pop out from behind a wall, put your sights on a target 100 yards away, and consistently group 2", then a 2moa red dot is for you.
I want to hate on the big fat ~6moa dots... but inside of standard defensive pistol range, the dot is only going to cover ~1/2" of the target. and that's still more accurate than most of us can shoot.
but i do like to go for the long shots at the range every now and again...

Bigger dot = more rapid target acquisition.
Smaller dot = more precision

One is important on a rifle, one is more important on a defensive handgun.

I always thought that way.
Then I went from a 6moa to a 2.5moa with no detriment to speed.
My opinion Brightness>MOA on a handgun.

Most of the faster steel shooters I know are running bigger dots. Often Cmores in the 8-12 MOA range.

Ok, just for convenience and lower cost this is what I will wind up with.

When I contacted Sig about 7 hours ago I was originally double checking the version of the Sig 229 I was going to put this on. They are offering a deal with a replacement slide, with suppressor height sights, already milled and drilled to accept the new Romeo1Pro. The red dot will be mounted and set up to co-witness height.

Of course it on back order because they discontinued the package with the Romeo0, and the Romeo1Pro is not released yet. I know it's new, but lifetime warranted.

I am looking forward to learning the ins and outs of this configuration!

Thanks for all the information folks!

Ya know, another expensive thing has arisen here Damnit! Now I have gun with suppressor height sights and if I swap out the barrel then...

...I HAVE TO BUY A CAN!$$$$$$$

Why does that seem inverse to me in regards to accuracy?
But you are not the first I've heard say similar things.

Does the bigger dot cover the POA?
The reason for the bigger dot is that the wife has some vision issues, but at the distances in our house she does really good with it...
And to be frank I enjoy shooting the larger fit too

I approve of you jumping in head first!

Is this dot going on your carry gun?

YES and NO dear!

I will carry my P220 only for a while after I am comfortable with it and believe in ME.

I am not going to cut up any of my 1911s until I am sure this is the way of the future for my old butt!

OK NKD, how do you mean by that?

I have never been one to do things half-assed!

I normally embarrass myself completely, or not at all. I am on my 3rd marriage so it's obvious I am not too bright!

I got it right this time however!

I think a slide made for dot is best solution for sure!
