My wife and I were talking after watching A-Team about finding a nice cigar and maybe a good whiskey and sitting on our porch one evening.

I'm a former smoker so I'm a little apprehensive but I used to love a good cognac dipped cigarillo but have never really smoked a cigar. I don't think the wife has smoked a "good" cigar before.

My question is: What would be a good but mild cigar for a newbie and where to get one in the S. Raleigh area.

Any other tips would be appreciated.

Many folks will say a Macanudo, they’re mild. To me they don’t have much flavor.
Arturo Fuente was mentioned above, their Hemingway is great.
I would not suggest a dark (Maduro) cigar to start with.

try something with a lighter colored wrapper. If you go into a cigar shop and ask for a "Connecticut" they'll know what you mean. I'd recommend an Oliva Connecticut reserve. Also, avoid anything that is too large at first.

If you get the nicotine nausea symptoms, take a sip of grape juice and swirl it around in your mouth an take a few sips. The sugar will help with the nausea pretty quickly.

If you want to roll the dice and see what you get, tell the tobacconist you want a mild-to-medium robusto with a natural or connecticut wrapper in the $10-15 range. Don't go cheap. They'll suggest a few things.

I like to go to shops that selll tobacco products only and also have a smoking lounge. I have not had good luck at "...&vape" type shops.

I like many of the suggestions above but will point to Nub Connecticut for starters. Good value, good flavor, won't take you an hour to smoke it.

Went to the cigar shop in Apex and picked up a couple of Olivia Connecticut's. If there is a next time, I'll try an Arturo.

My wife picked us up some Eagle Rare to go with it.

I saw this after but I refused to step into a vape shop (and I vape) especially for a cigar. I went to a cigar shop/lounge.

Fuente Hemingway’s are my favorite relaxing cigar. I buy the JR Cigar knock-offs for the golf course. But I disagree with the Maduro being too much for a first cigar (that is what I first had and loved it). They are not for everyone, though

My everyday is the Undercrown Gran Toro Maduro, which is a medium strength, but the best I've smoked is a Liga Privada #9 and their T-52.
When I first started with cigars I hade a few Padron Delicias that a friend gave me. They were reasonably priced (as I found out later) and I thought that they were the cat's meow! Now, I really don't like them.
I think as you grow into cigars, and try different smokes, your taste preference changes. Then again, it may just be me.
The Hemingways are another favorite of mine, but I have better luck finding my Undercrowns locally. I love the Hemingway Short Story for a quick smoke.
Size in the same brand also makes a difference in taste. I love the Undercrown Toro and Robusto...but dislike any of their larger or smaller versions of the same cigar.
Best advice for finding what you like is to try everything that appeals to you, and when you do, devote yourself to simply smoking that cigar, and nothing else. Don't try to smoke a cigar while you're doing something else....enjoy, or try to enjoy, the cigar. Sure, have a drink, but sip the whiskey or beer while giving the cigar enjoyment priority.

I’m drinking Eagle Rare tonight neat with a Rocky Patel. I like the Rocky Patel but it is no beginner. I know nothing about cigars except bolder dark wraps are my fav.

Fuente 858.

Nice and flavorful (and consistant) without being overpowering.

For what it's worth, if you feel like dropping into the Clayton/Selma area I have some no longer available mild cigars that are quite nice that I'd be happy to share with you.

Ruffy

For a milder cigar I like an Oliva Connecticut. I also like Arturo Fuente Chateau. That one may be on the medium side. A Rocky Patel Connecticut is good as well

Macanudois a nice mild cigar to start with, get yourself some Churchills or at least Toros. The big cigars are slower to get stronger so they are better for beginners. generally speaking.

Acid sells a sampler. Good place to start. Mac's are super mild and good quality cigar. I used to smoke Fuentes all the time. Their churchill size cigar used to be sold for less than $20 for ten. Holt's in Philly had them stacked to the ceiling some years ago for a shop anniversary celebration. I had been in earlier in the day. I was wearing shorts. Decided to stop by after dinner downtown and grab another smoke. THey were having a black tie affair. Robert Levin the owner himself barred me from entry because I was wearing shorts. That and I didnt have an invitation. 🤪
