Based on the success of the Berry's / Trailboss loading as a low power plinker, I'm moving on to the next idea that came up... the wadcutter.

Got some of the Berry's 147gr DEWCs and am doing a test load. 357 brass (because it's what I've got), mag primers, 3.0gr of Win231.

These just look so terribly wrong to me:

it is... you haven't seated it deep enough.

Ive always thought wadcutters look strange. But I love shooting them. The perfect little holes in the paper are awesome.

I've seen them sticking 1-2mm out, flush, somewhere in-between, or sunk all the way down as you've shown. I fired my test loads seated as seen in the photo over the chronograph and they were pretty inconsistent. I'm making up another batch to try later that are seated more traditionally:

Those second ones look a lot better. I like flush or just past the edge, like those. Waiting to hear the reports.

We have seated them out to full semi wad oal and given them 12.5 of 2400. They Are Formidable!!! I also like the full wads in .429.
Now you're sounding like Elmer Keith. ;)

With the 3.0gr W231 and magnum primers, these bad boys are running a scorching.... 521 fps.

I made up another batch with 2.7gr of AA #2 because I had it on the shelf. Starting load for a lead 147gr wadcutter in a 38 special is 2.6gr, so I gave it the extra 0.1 and a magnum primer just because of the touch of extra case volume in the 357 brass.

I was gifted an old set of 38 special dies over the weekend so I'll clean those up and can work with the 38 brass I've got as well. I didn't want to screw up the adjustment on my 357 setup to mess around with 100 pieces of 38 brass, but with another set of dies, no reason not to utilize it.
