We need a sticky on where to get engraving done...

I know we have @Unknownpro and @TARHEELSTATE that do engraving west of Raleigh.

Anyone doing it in the triangle? I need someone to laser engrave an NFA lower beside the trigger...

EDIT: In Raleigh. I don't want to ship or drive all day to get it done if there are other options.

There was a company that was a vendor on another site that does laser engraving in the triangle. Did a couple for me. Cannot recall their name though.

There is a jewelry store here in Hickory that does diamond engraving on all sorts of things. He is happy to do it on receivers, too. Buddy of mine had him do the receiver of his F1 SBS. Looks great.

I mailed mine to Tarheel state on a Monday and actually got it back in mail that Thursday!

Easy peasy.

I have 20w fiber laser w 50mm lens and cnc engraver. Located at Western blvd. I didn't offer commercial for nfa yet but engraved my own form 1 receiver.
FFL is required only if owner lefts firearm. No need if operation is made in presense of the owner.

You better get that in writing.
I have a feeling they would specify such an important exception. If I had a spare bedroom at my shop, folks could just spend a few days while I did my work. "I don't need an FFL, the guns owner is sleeping in the back."

Is a license needed to engage in the business of engraving, customizing, refinishing or repairing firearms?

Yes. A person conducting such activities as a business is considered to be a gunsmith within the definition of a dealer.

That's who I was thinking of but apparently he moved to Murphy NC awhile ago according to his website.

Unfortunate how ATF makes you get into semantics games because that is how they play it. In this case, engraving is far more likely to mean actually embellishing a gun with engraved patterns rather than putting info on it. My inspector told me the litmus test for needing X, Y, or Z FFL was "adding value" by the modifications you do. Does engraving my trust name add value to the item? I don't think so, but my interpretation isn't the one that is important. What a given ATF inspector/agent/desk jockey says on any given day is what matters and, as we have seen, that can be a moving target.

Guess if I use the jewelry store, I'll just remain quiet about how I got it done. :)

David did, and they do great work. I got the NFA engraving, and added a family crest as well :)
I was in their Cary (before they moved) location for @ an hour.
He's got a good blog as well, http://ncrenegade.com/

We (Tar Heel State Firearms) did this Good, Bad & Ugly engraving last week for a retired NYPD officer. Came out real nice.
On the opposite side we engraved, Blondie, Angel Eyes, Tuco .
